Stuart Loth is a writer, DJ, and record label operator associated with Northern California’s underground music scene in the 1990s.

Education and early work

[edit]

Loth studied Communication Design at California State University, Chico.[1]

While attending California State University, Chico, he wrote about music and culture for The Orion, where he was credited as a staff writer.[2] Separate coverage in the independent newspaper Synthesis identified him as being involved in campus concert booking and music programming through Associated Students Programming.[3]

During his time at California State University, Chico, Loth worked as a DJ at KCSC and was recognized in The Orion as serving as the station’s program director.[4][5] According to reporting in the Chico News & Review, KCSC was named the best college radio station in the country by Spin magazine.[6]

Career

[edit]

Loth was the founder and publisher of Forerunners, an independent music zine that focused on West Coast punk music.[7]

After publishing Forerunners, he founded and operated Smut Pedlurz Disks, an independent record label. The label was profiled in daily and weekly newspapers such as The Argus and the Chico News & Review.[8][9]

The band STOP was reviewed in national and international music publications including Maximum Rocknroll, Stereo Review, and CMJ New Music Report, where the group was identified in connection with releases on Smut Pedlurz.[10][11][12] Screaming Bloody Marys and other label-associated acts were additionally mentioned in independent punk publications such as Suburban Voice.[13] The label was also referenced in national music publications and in the book I Slept with Joey Ramone: A Family Memoir.[14]

Coverage in local newspapers and independent music publications documents Smut Pedlurz as an active Northern California label whose releases and affiliated acts were noted across multiple print outlets during the mid-1990s.
