Nancy Howes is an American educator, artist, author, and philanthropist, best known as the founder and CEO of the children's educational company Know Yourself. She has worked extensively in technology, the arts, and health literacy, and has served on several boards supporting arts and education initiatives.

Early Life and Education

Nancy Howes was born in the United States and attended high school in Denmark. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Metal Arts from the California College of the Arts and a Master of Education from Cambridge College.[1]

Career

Before founding Know Yourself, Howes spent over 25 years in the technology sector. She worked in infrastructure engineering, operations, and sales at companies including Texas Instruments, Allied Electronics, BBN Planet, and @Home Network, where she played a key role in deploying one of the first commercial internet-over-cable services in the United States.[2]

In 2012, Howes co-founded Know Yourself PBC, a public benefit corporation based in Oakland, California. The company focuses on promoting health literacy and self-awareness among children through engaging educational materials. Know Yourself has released over 25 titles combining storytelling, comic books, and curriculum design.[3] Howes also founded the Know Yourself Foundation, a fiscal sponsorship fund under the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, to support health education programs.[4]

She is the author of Focus Pocus: A Parent’s Guide to Fostering Concentration and Academic Achievement in a Distracted World. In 2024, Howes was named one of the “Top 50 Women Leaders in Education” by Women We Admire.[5]

Howes is also a certified Master Jeweler and former sculptor whose metalwork has been exhibited at the Maui Ocean Center. She completed a metal arts internship in Florence, Italy, at the Il Leoni silver house, specializing in chasing and repoussé work on decorative serviceware. Her interest in interior design led to one of her projects being featured on the Discovery Channel’s Epic Homes.[6]

Board Memberships and Advocacy

Howes served on the board of trustees of California College of the Arts for 15 years and has supported several nonprofit organizations focused on youth development and the arts, including New Langton Arts, Elevate Oakland, and Beyond Differences.[3]

Personal Life

Nancy Howes was previously married to American computer scientist and entrepreneur Tim Howes, with whom she has two children: Zhi Isabel Adeline Howes (b. 2004) and Madeline Shui Jing Howes (b. 2006).[3][7] She currently resides in Southern California.

Public Appearances and Interviews

In 2017, Howes attended BRING CHANGE TO MIND's Annual Revels & Revelations event in San Francisco, highlighting her involvement in mental health advocacy.[8]
