Draft:Nahmad Collection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  • Comment: It sounds like an amazing art collection, however the overall tone is promotional, almost like it has been written as PR for the collection. The draft does not present the subject with a neutral POV, leaving out criticism which is covered in the reliable sources, like the NYTimes, that are already used in the draft. Articles should be balanced and neutral in describing the subject. Netherzone (talk) 01:59, 25 June 2025 (UTC)

The Nahmad Collection is a private holding of modern and contemporary art assembled by brothers David and Ezra Nahmad.[1] In 2007, Forbes estimated its value at $7–8 billion.[2][3] The collection includes works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró and Amedeo Modigliani.[4][5] A large portion of the collection is stored at the Geneva Freeport in Switzerland.[6][7][8][9]

Overview

[edit]

The collection contains an estimated 300 works by Picasso, and pieces by Monet, Matisse, and Miró. Selected pieces have been exhibited at institutions including Kunsthaus Zürich, the Centre Pompidou, Musée d'Orsay, and the Grand Palais.[6][10][11][12]

In 2018, the collection acquired Picasso’s Young Girl with a Flower Basket (1905) for $115 million[13][14] and Modigliani’s Nu couché (sur le côté gauche) (1917) for $157.2 million, setting a record at Sotheby's at the time.[15]

Criticism

[edit]

Ownership of Modigliani’s Seated Man with a Cane (1918) has been disputed by the heirs of Jewish art dealer Oscar Stettiner, who allege the painting was looted by the Nazis.[16][17][18][19] Legal proceedings began in 2011 and were refiled in New York in 2015. In 2016, Swiss authorities seized the work following the Panama Papers revelations that it was held through International Art Center (IAC), controlled by the Nahmad family. A 2020 court filing included archival evidence suggesting the painting had been marked as stolen.[20]

The Nahmad family disputes the claim, asserting the painting was acquired legally at auction in 1996 and that its provenance is inconclusive.[21]
