Laurel Schwulst (born 1988) is an American graphic designer, artist, writer, educator, and programmer based in New York.[1][2][3]
Early life & education
[edit]Born in 1988, Schwulst grew up in Normal, Illinois.[4]
Schwulst graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010.[5]
Creative practice
[edit]Schwulst is recognized for her websites, her interactive design work, her writing, her internet art, and her teaching methods.[6][7][8]
Design
[edit]Following school, Schwulst worked at the design studio Linked by Air in New York City.[9] In 2015, Schwulst collaborated with artist Sydney Shen on a perfume review website called Perfume Area.[10][11] Schwulst and Shen adapted the website into a book published by Ambient Works, New York.[12][10] In 2016, Schwulst was hired to be Creative Director of The Creative Independent, an arts publication run by Kickstarter.[13][14]
Schwulst released an app called Flight Simulator "Ode to Airplane Mode" in collaboration with Soft, on February 5, 2019.[15][16][17]
In 2021, Schwulst released How To Build a Kite, a craft tutorial that "doubles as a meditative experience" published on the New York Times website.[18]
Since 2022, Schwulst has served as director of the gift shop at the Social network and creative research platform, Are.na.[19]
Schwulst is an advocate for a PBS of the internet, a non-profit "public broadcasting system for the for the modern digital, networked age".[20][4]
Schwulst has designed fonts including the Times Dot font, a version of Times New Roman.[21]
Teaching
[edit]Schwulst has taught at multiple institutions including Yale School of Art and Princeton University.[22] In 2018, Schwulst was awarded an Inspiring Yale award for her work as a designer and teacher.[23]
Schwulsts inventive approach to pedagogy with her courses often credited as inspiration and exercises, like her coding from life workshop, frequently reproduced.[24][25][26][27]
Schwulst co-founded HTML Energy with artist Elliot Cost.[1] HTML Energy is a community that advocates for the Hypertext Markup Language through educational meet-up and other events.[1]
On February 26, 2024, Schwulst spoke as a guest lecturer in the Robert B Church III Memorial Lecture Series at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, College of Architecture and Design.[28]
