The Institute of Neuroinformatics (INI) is a joint research institute of the University of Zurich (UZH) and ETH Zurich dedicated to understanding the computational principles of neural systems and translating these into intelligent artificial systems.[1]
History and Mission
[edit]INI was founded in 1995 as a collaboration between UZH and ETH Zurich. Its mission is "to discover the key principles by which brains work and to implement these in artificial systems that interact intelligently with the real world."[2] It is based on the Irchel Campus of UZH in Zurich and supports a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment.
Research
[edit]INI hosts eleven research groups led by principal investigators. Their areas of expertise include neuromorphic engineering, cognitive systems, machine learning, perception, decision-making, and computational neuroscience.[3]
Current groups include:
- Sensors Group (Tobi Delbrück; Shih-Chii Liu)
- Neural Learning and Intelligent Systems Group (Benjamin Grewe)
- Birdsong and Natural Language Group (Richard Hahnloser)
- Neuromorphic Cognitive Systems Group (Giacomo Indiveri)
- Neural Computation and Cognition Group (Valerio Mante)
- Emerging Intelligent Substrates Lab (Melika Payvand)
- Robotics and Perception Group (Davide Scaramuzza)
- Sensory Decision Making Group (Wolfger von der Behrens)
- Neurotechnology Group (Mehmet Fatih Yanik)
INI maintains a strong publication record and contributes to international scientific journals and conferences.[4]
Spin-offs
[edit]Several companies have emerged from INI's research, particularly in the field of neuromorphic hardware and sensory computing.[5]
Education
[edit]Bachelor Minor
[edit]The Institute offers a 30 ECTS minor in neuroinformatics at the bachelor level through the University of Zurich. It includes courses in computational neuroscience, programming, neuromorphic engineering, and electives from biology, physics, and informatics.[6]
MSc in Neural Systems and Computation (NSC)
[edit]The NSC program is a specialized 90 ECTS Master's degree jointly run by UZH and ETH Zurich under the Neuroscience Center Zurich. It includes coursework in systems neuroscience, theoretical neuroscience, neurotechnology, and a research-based thesis.[7][8]
Doctoral Training
[edit]Doctoral students are admitted through either the UZH Faculty of Science or the Neuroscience Center Zurich's international PhD program, supported by INI faculty.[9]
Collaborations
[edit]INI engages in interdisciplinary research with national and international institutions. It is involved in collaborative projects across neuroscience, robotics, bio-inspired computing, and artificial intelligence.[10]
Public Engagement
[edit]The institute regularly organizes public lectures, colloquia, and thematic workshops. Notable recurring events include the Capo Caccia Workshop on Neuromorphic Engineering and the IEEE Swiss CAS/ED real-time deep learning workshops.[11][12]
