Devadas Menon is an Indian communication scholar and media researcher whose work explores the relationship between technology, society, and communication systems. He was listed among the world’s top 2% scientists in communication and media studies by Stanford University in 2025. Menon stands out as the only Indian researcher featured in the 2025 global list under the subfield of Communication and Media Studies, within the broader discipline of Psychology and Cognitive Sciences.[1][2]

Early life and education

[edit]

Menon pursued higher studies in communication and media in India. He earned his PhD in Communication from Bangalore University and possesses postgraduate qualifications in Mass Communication, Electronic Media, and Sociology[3][4].

Academic career

[edit]

Menon began his academic career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Communication at the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN), where he taught media theory, digital communication, and research methodology.[5]

He later became associated with the Space Applications Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), contributing to communication research, science outreach, and knowledge dissemination.[2]

Research and publications

[edit]

Menon’s research focuses on digital media convergence, audience behavior, and social informatics. His studies examine how communication technologies shape civic participation, media use, and social networks in emerging digital environments.[6][7]

Notable works include studies on the motivations for social-media use[8], audience engagement with OTT streaming platforms, and the evolving ecology of digital communication[9]. Several of his research papers are cited in global academic discussions on Uses and Gratifications Theory, demonstrating their continuing theoretical relevance.[10][11]

Recognition

[edit]

In 2025, Menon was included in Stanford University’s global database of the world’s top 2% scientists for the subfield of communication and media studies.[1][12] His academic and professional work bridges digital communication research, science communication, and media pedagogy, marking him as one of the few Indian scholars internationally recognized in this domain.
