What do I do if another user claimed a page I made has promotional content but won't identify which text needs to be changed?
I recently created the page for the Global Student Forum. While creating the page, the cite source function stopped working, and it seemed like the only way to avoid losing my progress was to publish it unfinished and make subsequent edits to the page, which put it at risk of being swarmed by other users in its unfinished state. Sure enough, a user named Sumanuil put a banner on it alleging that the page contains promotional content. I cited sources for factual claims, tried to write in a neutral tone, and am not affiliated with the organization. I edited the text to remove what could be misconstrued as promotional, but the banner has remained. I posted a request for clarification on Sumanuil's Talk page, but Sumanuil removed this without providing any clarification.
I have been a Wikipedian for over ten years. The Wikipedia I have come to know is a toxic, insular group that is hostile to new and less experienced users. On multiple occasions, I have seen knowledge erased on minute technicalities that could have easily been ameliorated with dialogue and collaboration. Please do not let the Global Student Forum page be another example to further reinforce what I have reluctantly perceived. You can see the timestamps on the Global Student Forum page to see the time I put into creating it and researching the sources. I want to be compliant. I just need clarification and assistance. - The requirement that Wikipedia articles be primarily based around what independent sources have to say on the subject, rather than citations to the subject's own website etc, isn't a 'minute technicality'. In my opinion, the 'promotional' banner is still justified. As for difficulties with editing, you have the option of using your sandbox, which should ensure you can publish the article only when you consider it complete. - Several portions of the article are based on the GSF's own publications.
- Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost exclusively interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.
- The presence of text that is clearly what the subject wants to say about itself is what makes it promotional.
- If you have been around for ten years, I would expect you to know that the way disagreements get resolved is by engaging with the other parties, not by appealing for support in another forum. Please see WP:DR. ColinFine (talk) 18:36, 28 May 2025 (UTC)
- Though I agree with everything said above and that the tag should stay, I would like to note that For historical purposes did ask Sumanuil on their talk page, which was promptly reverted. - The article is entirely promotional, I have removed chunks of promotional text supoported only by primary sources, but it appears that there is nothing salveagable, Wikipedia articles are based on what reliable independent sources have reported on a topic NOT what the topics website says! - Sadly, some people will vandalise anything, though some topics attract it more than others - a popular video game is an unsurprising target. From a quick look at the history, the most recent vandalism is likely to mostly down to a single individual - clearly obsessed. There have been long-running problems though, leading to a succession of blocks. [1] We don't really need concern ourselves as to why people engage in such behaviour as long as it can be stopped. We do have biographical articles, but only on individuals who meet our notability criteria, as demonstrated through in-depth coverage in independent published reliable sources. Good day or evening! Could you please tell me what we do with one or two sentences articles? I was reading random articles and found this one. - Hi, Foxyra! Since it's a scientifically valid taxon, it's considered inherently notable (by en.Wikipedia) – see Wikipedia:Notability (species).

Was this about the yacht of that name (which might theoretically merit an article), the Fazisi Stadium (why so named? First, find reliable sources, independent of the yacht's owners, for information about the yacht. (Wikipedia articles, whatever language they're in, are not reliable sources.) Satelite images and creative commons
Hi all, I'm just curious if open-street map or google satellite view images are considered open-access under creative commons licensing, and can thus be screenshotted or saved to be uploaded for image reference on the site. I've searched elsewhere but couldn't find a definitive answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

- @CSGinger14: Google satellite views are definitely copyrighted and can't be uploaded to Commons. I'm not entirely sure about OpenStreetMap, but I found this thread at Commons's Village pump that seems to indicate that OSM screenshots are OK to upload. - @Thealewolf .jpg are fine, although the current logo for Cribbs F.C. is a .png. The issue is whether the logo is copyright or is too simple and thus public domain. See WP:Logo for advice on this. The current logo is at File:Cribbs F.C. logo.png, uploaded as a WP:NONFREE image, so you could always upload the new one in the same way, just onto en: Wikipedia. Editing a page
I'm currently editing the Life of Pi page and when I try to click publish changes, it forces me to take a CAPTCHA test, and no matter how many times I take the CAPTCHA test, it does not let me publish changes, but instead, keeps giving me another CAPTCHA test. - A common mistake with CAPTCHAs on Wikipedia (which of course you may not be making) is to enter your answer and then click 'Refresh' next to the entry box.
- Instead you need to enter the answer and then click 'Publish Changes'.
- The 'Refresh' is for when you can't read the CAPTCHA image and want to request a different one.

Multiple references
I would like to note that in the Back to the Future article, some of the sentences have a footnote stating "Attributed to multiple references" since some of them have at least four or more references attached to said sentences.
Whenever I find similar sentences that are attached to multiple references on such articles, I use a footnote stating the same thing. Should it apply to all articles if needed? Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 18:52, 30 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Sjones23 I don't think so. Back to the Future is a featured article which will have gone through extensive discussion about referencing. I think that the multiple cites using {{efn}} have been done that way as explanations of the fact that in this case many sources (which are linked in the footnotes) make each specific point. Normally, it would be considered WP:Citation overkill to have so many references in the main text and doing it using explanatory footnotes makes the main text somewhat less cluttered. I don't think this approach is needed generally. An alternative is WP:Citation bundling but that's also fairly rare. Mike Turnbull (talk) 09:43, 31 May 2025 (UTC)

Use of which? template
The article Montgomery Canal had three which? templates against the mention of Acts of Parliament. I have resolved two, but am left with The Ellesmere and Chester Canal obtained an act of Parliament[which?] to enable them to become the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company.
All the sources I can find agree that an Act of Parliament was obtained, and the List of Acts of Parliament shows that three acts were obtained in 1846, all for railways, but one of them included the powers to rename the company. No sources say which of the three acts included those powers, and the parliamentary archive does not have the text for any of the three acts. Can I just remove the which? tag? Trying to explain the issue in the article seems to be a bit off-topic. I could remove mention of the Act of Parliament, but as I say, all the sources mention it. Help needed finding a source
I was editing the page Christianity and Judaism and I noticed that someone had made a statement in which they said was "according to the Talmud" (misspelled as Talmut). I'm not sure where, or for that matter if, I could find a source to back the statement up. The text is in the first paragraph of the section "Jewish self-identification". Blatant errors on page - Dart (missile) I do not have the computer skills to edit !

MISLEADING _ indigenous Australians did NOT use darts from spear throwers, but extremely long, thin and flexible spears (without fletching)

- It appears to have been done to indicate that the aerodrome is now closed. Possibly some sort of convention, but not very helpful for the average reader. - I agree. The statement "he was scheduled to deliver a public lecture" is weird – did he deliver it, or didn't he? If he did, just write "he delivered a public lecture". Translation
Hello, I'm studying a Master's of Translation studies at a university and I want to translate some Wikipedia articles for experience (as a part of my degree I need to make some published translations) but I see that I need to have made at least 500 edits to Wikipedia to publish my translations. - There is advice about translating from other language Wikipedias to English at Wikipedia:Translation and Help:Translation. I also recommend Help:Your first article as you are responsible for ensuring that your new article meets en Wikipedia requirements, including Wikipedia:Notability.

- @Specificy It is worth noting that the English Wikipedia won't accept translations unless the topic meets our notability requirements. Hence, the mere existence of an article in another language won't guarantee that even a perfect translation will be accepted. One way to proceed if you are fluent in multiple languages is to go from English -> another language, starting with a well-sourced article here (see WP:ASSESS for our content assessments). As mentioned, the 500-edits requirement is not relevant as I assume you will be doing the translations yourself as part of your degree, with limited if any AI-based help. My Wikipedia app's clock has jumped ahead by about 5 hours. How to fix?
I just noticed that my Wikipedia home page is showing the date as June 3, when my local time zone says June 2. I assume it's using GMT rather than Eastern Time. - Thank you for asking, Addthomp. Coding wouldn't be necessary; reading will be. You'd have to start by finding out whether the murals fall into the public domain (in the legal sense of this term). For what is and isn't in the public domain in the US, please read c:Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States. Start by assuming that the murals aren't in the public domain; look for incontrovertible evidence that they do (and be ready to cite this evidence). If, and only if, they are demonstrably in the public domain, then you may upload your photographs of them to Wikimedia Commons. (Each time, you'd have to attach an appropriate US public domain template.) These photographs of yours would themselves be in the public domain (see Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.). If the murals are not in the public domain, then your options are very much more limited (see Wikipedia:Non-free content). I note that the article United States Post Office (Cooper Station) says that the building they're in "was built in 1937"; I'm assuming that the murals weren't moved in from elsewhere and thus are no older than 1937. -- Hoary (talk) 06:53, 3 June 2025 (UTC)

How do I translate my English page into Spanish and save it to my sandbox?
I recently completed the upgrading of an English starter article to B level. It is called the Bombardment of Greytown. Because it is a history piece set in Central America, I would like to bring my version to the attention of the Spanish editors who created the Spanish version of the original article.
I thought the best and least intrusive way to do this, would be to do a translation that would not overwrite any of their established article. So I thought I would create a sandbox for it and invite them on the talk page of their article to visit my sandbox and see if they might want to incorporate some or all of the translation into their Spanish version of the article.
What do you think?

I cannot do this effort - I don't have the technical skills and I am embarrassed to ask for help. Unfortunately I will let this go - someone in the future might do the "double up" of refs, but it will not be me.

- What's within the quotation marks of "31337" consists of nothing outside the set {0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9}. This isn't true of what's within the quotation marks of ":31337" (because the numerals are preceded by a colon, of course). Incidentally, I wonder about the accuracy of the advice above: Wikipedia "source" isn't (X)HTML, but it's based on it; and if I remember right, an ID in (X)HTML mustn't merely include something other than a numeral; rather, it must start with something other than a numeral. So, the needed skill: Provide one (and only one) reference like
<ref name="somedistinctivename">full details of the source</ref>
and one or more other references like<ref name="somedistinctivename" />
