The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the Map workshop. Anyone can make a request for a map to be created or improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.
You are encouraged to share information and request advice from others. Also see possible conventions toolbox, map tutorials and topographic map tutorials.

Advice to requesters
What do we do?
  • Sourced requests: If possible, please try to provide a reliable source to create a map. This includes a map already on Wikipedia with a reliable source or an external link.
  • Please check: Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • Direct collaboration: Some mapmakers are especially interested by one topic area. If you notice a mapmaker fitting your needs, consider asking on their personal talk page to request maps.
  • {{Reqmap}}: To request a map, you can also tag the talk page of the article in need of a map with or {{Reqmapin|Australia}} (articles then appear in Category:Wikipedia requested maps)
If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

Cork Suburban Rail

Request: update map... Teddy455 (talk) 14:19, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Those route maps are created by a template, they aren't a map in the sense that we work with here. You need to edit Template:Mallow to Youghal/Cobh. Kmusser (talk) 15:00, 24 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do you still want help with this request? If so, please can you tell us what exactly needs changing in the diagram? Certes (talk) 21:52, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nueva Esparta

Request: I have translated this map using (Template:Translation possible). But I really need help with changing MAR CARIBE to CARIBBEAN SEA. The letters are made of nodes, and not text. Thanks in advance. The Illusional Ministry (talk) 23:44, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I tried, and i looked good in inkscape, but when i uploaded it a get a big blue block where the text is supposed to be. The Illusional Ministry (talk) 12:54, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Remove them and put in new text. It's Times New Roman, all-caps, bold italic. You can leave the original text in while you put in new text to get an idea of the 'right' size. (But of course, any size goes, as long as it's readable yet subtle.) Classical geographer (talk) 09:08, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did you get this fixed? Do you still need help?? MapMaster (talk) 03:22, 18 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Still need help. P. S. Burton (talk) 21:36, 25 January 2010 (UTC) (new username).[reply]

I just uploaded a new version. I not only fixed the big blue text block, I also enlarged the Legend, inserted a new locator map of Venezuela, set the ocean color to the English Wikipedia standard, changed the dashed border to a line, and enlarged the names of the islands. I also pulled the title of the map and the little teeney coordinate numbers inside the map, where they belong. All of these edits, in my opinion at least, make the map a bit easier to read and understand. Hope you like them. MapMaster (talk) 15:01, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. P. S. Burton (talk) 19:46, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Postcode areas in the United Kingdom

Article(s): List of postcode areas in the United Kingdom

Request: Can someone make a simple black and white svg map of the postal areas in the United Kingdom? There are a couple maps on the net [1][2][3][4].Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 11:19, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Cool, thanks Classical geographer. The article gets about a 1,000 hits a day [5], and i think it'd really help people out if they can visualise the list there. Another thing was that i was working on a surname article (McQueen (surname)) and one site [6] lists the frequency of surnames by these postal areas. So if you can come up with an svg version it could be the base for coloured name-distribution maps too.--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 05:57, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): Actually, there's a map on Commons already, but it's in colour, and PNG. Yet it provides a link to OpenStreetmap, from which an SVG can be extracted as well. I'll give that a try, unless someone else is willing to take it up. Classical geographer (talk) 18:44, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you can wait four months, Royal Mail sources may become free enough for us to use[7]. Certes (talk) 17:07, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Waiting may be the way to go on this one, the OSM version has definite errors, and versions linked in the request are all copyrighted, if the official map become usable then problem solved. Kmusser (talk) 14:45, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense, no harm in waiting and seeing how things unfold,--Brianann MacAmhlaidh (talk) 06:42, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Commons map is a good effort but beware of several mistakes. Chelmsford is not on Teesside, nor Motherwell in Fife, and I can see a dozen more subtle errors. London and perhaps NW England need an inset to fit in the missing labels. Certes (talk) 14:05, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Jaguar Distribution

Article(s): Jaguar

Request: Please update the SVG map, and change the colors to match the gif. Connormah (talk) 05:02, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): I see that the gif map is used in most Wikipedias and the svg map is used only on the French version. My concern is that neither map is referenced. Maybe the French map is (more) correct. Is there any reference that anyone could provide which could validate either map? MapMaster (talk) 21:41, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indian state blank svgs needed

Hi. I noticed File:Assam protected areas map-blank.svg. We are desperately needing good svg blank maps of the states of India (with the districts lightly outlined) for use in pushpin in infoboxes. Basically I'm looking for a full set of maps of each of the Indian states in the style of File:Pakistan location map.svg. Like your Assam map but blank. Amazingly nobody has created blank svgs for India yet and we've had to put up with the horrible colored maps for ages. Could the graphics lab please create some good quality blank svgs and list the coordinates like on the Pakistan image page to make it possible to use for pin maps? Thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:59, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You should probably check in over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian maps to see if they're going to have heartburn over changing those. Many of those colored maps started out as blank ones and it would just be a matter of rolling them back to the earlier version, but I wouldn't do so without getting some consensus from the Indian maps folks. Orthographic projection of Quebec

Article(s): Quebec, n:Portal:Quebec, ...

Request: Can you create the orthographic projection of Quebec plz ? It will be for the articles Quebec, Québec and for some portal on WP and Wikinews. Sniff (talk) 11:52, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s): The map you give as an example comes from a range of maps showing countries and larger regions, including continents; for those, a position with respect to the world makes sense. For Quebec, currently all maps show the region in relation to Canada. An orthographic projection can of course be made, but I just want to make sure beforehand that this is not requested for secessionist purposes. By the way, you might also consider asking at commons:Grey-green orthographic projections maps. Classical geographer (talk) 13:33, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article could be improved considerably with a map. LIST is going to be the best source for topography and the names of things. This gives a good overview. Walking tracks should be included - you can't drive most places there. Noodle snacks (talk) 04:35, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Korean provinces/cities

Additional maps:

Articles: South Korea: Busan, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Daegu, Daejeon, Gangwon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, Incheon, Jeju, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Seoul, Ulsan. North Korea: Chagang, Hambuk, Hamnam, Hwangbuk, Hwangnam, Kangwon, Kaesong, Kumgangsan, Pyongbuk, Pyongnam, Pyongyang, Rason, Ryanggang, Sinuiju.

Request: Can someone please make SVG locator maps for each province/city based visually on the maps above? I would appreciated it if someone could make two versions for each province/city: one within South/North Korea and one within the whole peninsula. The files should be named in a consistent manner. Article editor (talk) 00:52, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion: Is something wrong with the older locator maps, such as this one:

Of course, the old map is not an SVG, but locating is just a dot placed over any map - whether it is SVG or JPG doesn't really matter, does it? Classical geographer (talk) 15:42, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pacific-centered Mercator projection map with national boundaries for Wikification

</gallery>

Article(s): several articles could use the map]]

Request: create new version (or fix this one) to clearly show national boundaries in white, so the map is colorable according to Wikipedia standards/or/create new version according to the "Pacific Ocean centered" map at http://english.freemap.jp/world_e/8.html ... Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 10:48, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion:

Comment: the national boundaries are on there, just not visible at thumbnail size, so it is colorable as is - creating a version with wider white boundaries from this one should be possible. Kmusser (talk) 18:49, 23 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would name children after you if you could. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 22:55, 1 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I made an attempt but that file keeps crashing Inkscape, it might be due to the large file size - if someone with a better computer wants to try, it would be appreciated. Kmusser (talk) 20:47, 7 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for trying, is there a way to reduce the size first? Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 04:10, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it could be edited in a text editor, but that's beyond my crude SVG skills. Kmusser (talk) 04:14, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): Severe weather & Storm Prediction Center

Request: Not quite sure if this counts as a map or illustration, but either way, please vectorize. Ks0stm (TCG) 20:47, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Note: I moved this from the illustration workshop after being told it belonged here. Ks0stm (TCG) 00:11, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

It's an illustration of a map, so it belongs at the map workshop. ZooFari 23:40, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll move this request there then...thanks. Ks0stm (TCG) 00:05, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can you explain why you'd want a vector version of this? If I look at its use at Storm_Prediction_Center?uselang=en#Mesoscale_discussions, it's presented as an actual graph produced by a forecasting center, and discussed as a historical example. Therefore the map is more like a photograph than an actual map, imho. Classical geographer (talk) 21:42, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
When I put the map into the article, I don't know if it was the size I put it in at or what, but it came out hazy/blurry. A vector version would be better for displaying it at sizes other than its original size(?). Ks0stm (TCG) 21:51, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): Banksia sphaerocarpa

Request: This article needs a range map, but what would be great is to colour code it to the five subspecies involved. Here is the map for the species as a whole, while the five subspecies are mapped here (pale blue), here (yellow), here, here and here(orange) but see below. I have suggested some colours which are pertinent. Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:52, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PS: The maps are on the official Western Australian Government herbarium website. As with the originals, limiting the map to western australia is prudent :) Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:55, 11 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PPS: Regarding the sphaerocarpa variety sphaerocarpa, see here - the northern part of its range is now pumilio (i.e. they do not co-occur). Casliber (talk · contribs) 00:40, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Request: Could someone add the towns listed in "articles:" above to the maps above, and create maps of the same style for each of those towns given this to locate the towns and [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] to shape the towns? I'm sorry this is such a large request, and it can be done in stages or broken into separate requests if necessary. Also, to give a sense of scale, the small red square (bottom-left most) highlighted red on the first map in the gallery is one mile by one mile.
