Wikipedia:Auto-categorization/Wikipedia namespace

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Beland (talk | contribs) at 01:59, 28 April 2005 (Fix disclaimers, external, downloads). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The following is a list of uncategorized pages in the Wikipedia namespace as of 26 Nov 2004, though an update was run as of 6 April 2005 to remove most of the already-categorized pages and to add subpages to the list. The following tasks need to be accomplished:

  • Assign pages that should be kept around to an appropriate category under Category:Wikipedia.
  • Create new subcategories as appropriate. Subcategories of Category:Wikipedia usually have the word "Wikipedia" in the name to make it clear that they are for internal use (i.e. not part of the encyclopedic content of the site).

While we're at it, it would also be helpful to:

  • Identify redundant or out-of-date pages and merge them (or nominate them for merger) with more current pages (see Wikipedia:Duplicate_articles), or add them to Category:Wikipedia historical pages if there is no appropriate merger target.
  • Identify spurious pages and nominate them for deletion (see WP:VFD).
  • Rename pages with malformed names, such as when they do do not conform to the "only capitalize the first word unless part of a proper noun" rule.

Please delete items from this list when they have been categorized and otherwise taken care of to your satisfaction, to prevent duplication of effort.

After this has been accomplished, some general cleanup of the Category:Wikipedia tree will probably be necessary.

Proposed merger on Wikipedia talk:Why aren't these pages copy-edited and Wikipedia:Copyediting with Wikipedia:How to copy-edit. -- Beland 03:43, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Should be deleted?

I've contacted User:Docu to ask about the 4 above... Sortior 04:23, Jan 1, 2005 (UTC)

This could surely be merged into something else. -- Beland 07:42, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This page is incomplete, and probably will continually be out of date as the membership of various Wikipedia policy, style, and how-to categories change. I would recommend disbanding this page, putting any useful structure in the intros to Category:Wikipedia policies and guidelines and subcategories. See also Wikipedia:HOWTOs_Index. -- Beland 06:52, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This is a purely alphabetical index...it seems to me it would be more useful to merge it into Category:Wikipedia_style_and_how-to, which itself might benefit from being subdivided by subtopic. (Splitting howtos from style advice, for instance.) -- Beland 06:52, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Actually, a new how-to-only category should be created, and this article redirected to it. -- Beland 04:03, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This page is duplicative of the external link at Wikipedia:Graphics tutorials and should just be merged with that page. -- Beland 06:52, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Tagged {{Move to Wikibooks}} along with many others. -- Beland 03:43, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This page is really short. It should probably just be merged into one of the FAQs. -- Beland 06:52, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Should this be merged with Wikipedia:Technical FAQ? -- Beland 06:52, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Lists

Many of these are probably obsolete and should be deleted and/or converted into categories (possibly using templates and/or a bot).

Tools

Archival

These should be added to Category:Wikipedia historical pages. Since there are so many, we should probably create subcategories. -- Beland 07:15, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Projects/Topic-specific

Some of these should be deleted when finished; others are standing projects.

Subpages

These are as of the April 6, 2005 database dump. Many are not listed because they are being prepared for batch processing.

Usually if there are several subpages to the same main page, they should get a category with a name similar to that of the main page. Many subpages in the Wikipedia namespace are temporary pages that should be deleted, merged, or transwikied.
