::::::I apologize for upsetting you. I did not realize what was happening at the time and was not intentionally reverting you. If we had a discussion on my talk page we could have settled this. |
|||
::::::I am tired but I will try to explain, hopefully clearly. |
|||
::::::Regarding the embassy, the article on enwiki says that the area I was trying to put the embassy in is thriving and and is where embassies are. The other building, the brown steeple, I just disagree with you. I have stared at that image for months and we disagree where it goes. For a long time I have been the only editor I am aware of dealing with the beaches of Karachi, etc. It didn't occur to me that anyone else was categorizing there. So I didn't realize what was happening. |
|||
::::::Regarding the mosque, I always follow the "cultural heritage" and/or enwiki name, and I would have preferred to deal with the differing numbers with some thought. What is the rush? You didn't give me time to adjust to what was happening. There are other images of that mosque in other categories, so I don't think it is clear to other editors that the name you use applies to that building. The existence of an infobox should not be a reason for a less-than-useful name for a category. |
|||
::::::Threatening to block me is not a reasonable way of clarifying issues. |
|||
::::::If you look just above your threats on my talk page, you will see a discussion about one of the last times I was reverted. I made a new category for the "Merced River" that wasn't in "Yosemite Park" and that editor thanked me several times. Recently I was reverted by someone from Germany who kept putting German benches in "Madison, Wisconsin". I made a category something like "benches donated by Madison, Wisconsin" so that it didn't look like those benches were actually in "Madison, Wisconsin" and that editor was very happy with that. |
|||
::::::Please don't assume I am motivated by evil. I am always willing to accommodate. Please believe that. And as I explained before to you, I have trouble noticing that warning bell or whatever it is at the top. I check it now and then, but I'm not going to realize anything it indicates instantly, within a few minutes, especially when I'm absorbed which I usually am. Can't link categories
I created a category Category:Rafael Caro Quintero. I was going to link to his Wikipedia article but the "Add links" button doesn't show up on my sidebar. The "Edit links" button does for categories/pages that already have links to other places. Kingofthedead (talk) 06:58, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Kingofthedead: You need to go to the Wikipedia article and navigate from that to the existing Wikidata item. Then add this via Wikidata. I'll try to do that on your behalf in this case, but if you create categories at all often, you'll probably want to learn your way around that. - Jmabel ! talk 14:36, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I used to be able to link the Wikipedia article directly from the Commons category. There was an "Add links" option. Kingofthedead (talk) 05:33, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Kingofthedead: Yes, before Wikidata that is how it worked. And it might have been easier to create the links, but the result was a bit of a mess, with a lot of missing links and some that were contradictory (A links to B, B links to C, A & C are on the same wiki). - Jmabel ! talk 15:23, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: No, a couple weeks ago I was able to do it. Wikidata had been up and running for a long time by then. Kingofthedead (talk) 22:34, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
- Technically, you can add [[en:Rafael Caro Quintero]] on the commons category page, and it will link to en:Rafael Caro Quintero. But it is not the recommended way to do it. It doesn't create a link back, and it doesn't connect to Wikidata or to any Wikipedia other than English. Unless you are just saying you want a link in the visible text description of the category (if any), in which case the best way to do that is to write {{en|Whatever you want to say…{{w|Rafael Caro Quintero}} … etc.}}. - Jmabel ! talk
- I'm just wondering why the add link option got removed from the sidebar. because it still did work for me up until a couple weeks ago, linking to Wikidata and everything. Kingofthedead (talk) 20:06, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: If you don't know anything about this yourself would you know anyone who would? Kingofthedead (talk) 00:56, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Kingofthedead: The method I described will work. I know nothing about the button. The Phabricator task I've linked appears to be about this; if you want to track the progress of this, you can sign on there. - Jmabel ! talk 02:27, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

- @Bmantha: If there is any likelihood of controversy about the rename, and if the uploader is still active on Commons, you should typically start by notifying the uploader on their user talk page and discussing this.
- Typically, you should fix the description before requesting a file rename.
- If you believe the changes should be uncontroversial, or if you've already had the required discussions, you can use {{Rename}}.
File not behaving: Why can't I get it to animate?
I am trying to provide the best quality version of this file that will still animate on Wikipedia pages: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ostracod_swimming_motions_20200520.gif
Why won't any of the newer versions I have attempted animate? As of right now, if I scroll down on the file history, only the original (poor color) image is animated. Why can't I get any of the other images to animate? I would like to keep the highest quality color-corrected version of the image, but have a preview version that shows on Wiki pages that will show the animation. Thank you for any help Ikjbagl (talk) 03:14, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Ikjbagl: It is a too high resolution GIF image like your one so it will not be animated as it says "Note: Due to technical limitations, thumbnails of high resolution GIF images such as this one will not be animated.". Do you want to make it animated but smaller and poorly colored? Also it is not your problem,[1][2][3] Wikimedia Commons has technical limitations for media/pictures. --Red-back spider (talk) 09:34, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Can't move userpages with Cat-a-lot
Commons:Categories for discussion/2018/05/Category:Globally locked commons users was just closed as keep a few hours ago, but because everyone agreed that it had a capitalisation error, I've moved the category to Category:Globally locked Commons users. I then attempted to used Cat-a-lot to move the contents (52 userspace pages, nothing else) from "commons" to "Commons", but for some reason only 1 of the 52 pages was moved. Any idea what happened? (The 1 page was User talk:, while the 51 pages were all User:, if that matters.) My first thought was that this category was transcluded by a template, but when I picked User:Blackmagicvashikaranspecialist at random, I saw that the category call appears directly on the userpage. (Also, I'm an admin, so whether or not these userpages are protected shouldn't affect me.) Finally, I re-tried moving the 51 pages, and just like before I saw that all 51 pages got the normal coloured highlight and Cat-a-lot says "51 files selected" just above "Check over-categorization", but when I ordered the move, I got an error message from Chrome:
commons.wikimedia.org says
No file is selected
This is identical to the message that I get when zero pages of any sort are selected and I tell it to move something. Finally, note that "Allow categorising pages (including categories) that are not files" is ticked in my preferences; if it weren't, presumably the User talk: wouldn't have gotten moved either. Nyttend (talk) 12:15, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Nyttend: I never use Cat-a-lot so I can't tell you about the shortcoming there, but you're an admin, so you can request the move at User:CommonsDelinker/commands. Presumably that should work. - Jmabel ! talk 17:11, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
uploaded video
Hello I have uploaded a video for the first time but I don't know how to change the License. I am not familiar with informatics at all. Can you, please, help me ? It's now on the public domain but I want it to be under a CC BY-SA 4.0 License. Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by DJAMS79 (talk • contribs) 12:46, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- @DJAMS79: Hi, and welcome. Who is the copyright holder? What license did they give on Vimeo? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:58, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks. It is said that I have 7 days to change the license but I don't know how to do it. It is said that it will be released under a public domain license if I don't change it within this 7 days. I made this video so I can decide how to use it and I would like it to be licensed under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license. DJAMS79 (talk) 21:11, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- @DJAMS79: I presume this is about File:Vidéo ET2.webm; if I'm wrong, then please let me know what file it is actually about. The license tag you need to add is {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}.
- It is possible that someone will ask you to send confirmation to COM:OTRS that shows that the Vimeo account in question is, indeed, yours.
- It is not immediately obvious to me how this file is in scope for Commons, could you explain? - Jmabel ! talk 23:32, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Yes my video is this one but I can't find a way to change the license tag. I can't find the text to modify it. It seems like my video has already been released and I can't change it anymore. Can you please guide me step by step to go back to it and change this. I should delete it if I can't find a solution. It will be too bad for the community DJAMS79 (talk) 09:55, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- @DJAMS79: As I said, "The license tag you need to add is {{Cc-by-sa 4.0}}." You edit that template into the page just like any other edit that adds a template. It looks like you've already done that, though, so I'm not sure what you want to be guided through. - Jmabel ! talk 14:49, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Photos marked for deletion
Hi - I can't figure out how to respond, this is my response to EugeneZelenko re: marking my photos for deletion.
EugeneZelenko, thank you for your attention to the page I'm putting up for Freedom FM Radio in Brooklyn, NY. I'm hosting a new talk show here, please tune in at https://russian.radio this Thursday at 4PM EST. I offered to help with setting up the Wikipedia page for this very charming organization. Believe it or not, this is how things are here; the photos are of actual broadcasts and the events surrounding it. I gladly took responsibility for its usage, they are mostly from the station's website. I'd like to request that they would be kept where they are at Wikimedia Commons, since I satisfied the conditions of their publishing as stipulated at Wikimedia Commons. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yura Dashevsky (talk • contribs) 15:55, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

SVG rendering issue

Hi, I am having a problem with an SVG as it is rendered by the wiki engine for scaled PNGs. In all browsers the SVG is displayed correctly, only the PNGs derived by wikimedia from it, are missing elements.
The file in question is found here. It is an extension of my files here and here, which produces no such problem. Is there a known issue with the way the wikimedia/wikipedia platform is rendering SVGs? Cush (talk) 09:28, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Johannes, this looks like a bug, right? — Speravir – 18:01, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Either that, or some kind of incompatibility. The issue seems to exist with elements that use a color gradient. Who knows about the rendering functionality used here? Cush (talk) 21:36, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Cush, see Help:SVG: librsvg; and there is also a section about gradients. — Speravir – 21:55, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Either that, or some kind of incompatibility. The issue seems to exist with elements that use a color gradient. Who knows about the rendering functionality used here? Cush (talk) 21:36, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Ok, I fixed it. The rendering engine seems to require the usage of the deprecated xlink namespace. Someone should update the rendering mechanism. Cush (talk) 22:20, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
- Cush, according to xlink:href - SVG | MDN xlink is deprecated only for SVG2, but you declared the file already in your first uploaded revision to be in version 1.1. I do not know, though, whether it had worked if you’d declared version 2. — Speravir – 00:03, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
- Good point. Is there a sandbox for testing svg files? Cush (talk) 06:57, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Cush: href ist not a SVG-feature (at least currently), and should not have any effect of rendering, so technically rsvg is correct and chrome and firefox rendered it "wrong".
- SVG1.1 ist the current standard and SVG2 ist not released, and SVG1.2/SVG2 is hardly supported at all (except browsers). rsvg does not even (fully) support SVG 1.1 (e.g. textPath in File:SVG_Test_TextAlign.svg), see Librsvg_bugs or Category:Pictures_showing_a_librsvg_bug contains almost 1000 Images. SVG2 is not cosindered as a rsvg-bug, it is considered (under SVG1.1) as a broken file, some images can be found here: Category:Images_with_SVG_2.0_features, most allready repaired (so check filehistory).
- rsvg does not consider version at all, you can also write version="3.14159265" or anything you like, nobody cares (except humans).
- Actually the file is (because of href) currently invalid see https://validator.w3.org/check?uri=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fb%2Fba%2FStandard_Model_of_Elementary_Particles_and_Gravity.svg&doctype=SVG+1.1
- sandbox:
- check if it is valid at https://validator.w3.org/check?uri=https%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fb%2Fba%2FStandard_Model_of_Elementary_Particles_and_Gravity.svg&doctype=SVG+1.1 with Doctype as SVG.
- You can check the file for common rsvg-errors (href ist not a rsvg-error, it is a broken file): https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Commons_SVG_Checker&withJS=MediaWiki:CommonsSvgChecker.js
- If rendering does not succed (timeout during rendering) you can use https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgcheck/index.php
- If rendering errors occour the can be (mostly) fixed with https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgworkaroundbot/ (As in this case)
- You can upload images to https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org to test your file
- If you want that the file is stored "forever" (Also after "deleting" it is still stored and can still be restored) and want to tickle watchlist you could use File:Test.svg
- @Speravir: For this example whith href-problem you just need to use https://tools.wmflabs.org/svgworkaroundbot/ and the file is repaired. (choose any option you like, for this case I would recommend to keep all options deactived, except you want to have the file optimized)
- Basically the tool uses
sed -i "s/ href=\"/ xmlns:xlink=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1999\/xlink\" xlink:href=\"/g" filename.svg
see https://github.com/JoKalliauer/cleanupSVG/blob/master/validBySed.sh#L171 which replaceshref="
withxmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="
. - — Johannes Kalliauer - Talk | Contributions 08:55, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks, Johannes. It’s sad that Cush did not react here despite being active in the meantime. Could you btw add the link to your tool into Help:SVG (“Before you upload”)? — Speravir – 21:55, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- … but he/she/they uploaded a newer version using
xlink
again, but in this way:<use href="#tilegb" xlink:href="#tilegb" />
and adding an apparently wrong comment. And in my opinion this has a huge issues with mentioning that it is a derivative and original author, COM:OVERWRITE in the original and therefore with licensing. — Speravir – 22:09, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

or[[File:<File name>|Size (Use xxxpx, where xxx is a number)|Position (Left/Right/Center, default is right)<File name>|]]
, though the later method is more complex. Please feel free to ask me if you have further questions, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 06:06, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

Technical error with image taken by camera

can I use images from other wikipedia articles eg in different languages?
I am writing an article at the moment and I am struggling to find images in my own collection or in the stock image search - so I was wondering if it is within the copyrights of this page to use images from other Wikipedia pages on my own one? surely if it is in good taste and on a similar topic and on the same platform this should be ok? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinidor1 (talk • contribs) 11:40, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Vinidor1: "Good taste" has nothing to do with it. The issue is copyright. It would be a lot easier if you would indicate a specific image or images you are talking about, because the facts may vary. - Jmabel ! talk 13:18, 27 May 2020 (UTC)
My first article - image upload issue
I have just joined Wikipedia and written my first article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Northwood_Preparatory_School
I have tried to upload my photo to the article (Northwood Prep School Drone Shot.jpg) but when I do that I get the following error message "Something went wrong. We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. Using family photos
My sisters and I are the sole heirs to my parents' estate. Both my mother and father are dead. Can we use my father's photos in a Wikipedia article that we are writing? The photos depict early ski mountaineering and rock climbing activities. My father himself is pictured in some, along with others who participated in these activities. Thanks in advance for answering my question. Donna Dmbrinton (talk) 06:55, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- That should be OK. You should use the template {{Heirs-license}} in this case. --JuTa 09:58, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Dmbrinton: Usually, the copyright is owned by the photographer, not by the persons who have copies of the photo. Collections of family photos often include photos taken by different persons. In that context, the expression "father's photos" is unclear. So, the answer to your question depends, for each photo, on who took the photo. From what you say, you inherited the copyright on the photos for which you can tell or reasonably assume they were taken by your father or your mother. You do not own the copyright on photos taken by persons of whom you are not the heirs. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:59, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Dmbrinton and JuTa: Also, {{Heirs-license}} is not intended to be used directly on photos; it's sort of a meta-template for making templates. Use {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}} or one of the similar templates in Category:License_tags_for_transferred_copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
Deleting replaced images
It seems like there use to be a way to request deletions from the image page. If it's there I can't remember how to do it. I don't know how many others do this but I sometimes I upload improved copies of my images making the previous ones obsolete. Also, if you submit images to the Quality Image page, people often suggest changes. It's another reason for pointless earlier copies. This results in an accumulation of useless obsolete copies of pictures that use take up storage space unnecessarily. There needs to be a way for the original uploader of an image to delete these useless files. Jim Evans (talk) 17:15, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- Licensing requires the attribution to be available forever, even if it isn't visible. So deleting things doesn't free storage space as any previous version of a file can be undeleted. All it does it reduce clutter. No bad thing, but it's not a resource issue. HTH. Rodhullandemu (talk) 17:20, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- thanks Jim Evans (talk) 17:56, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
- Jim Evans, we would also discourage uploading new versions of an image under a new filename. If it's a non-controversial improvement to the image, just upload it as a new version of the original. No need to delete an old file then. -mattbuck (Talk) 18:12, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Licensing of translated diagrams?
Hello, I've made a translation of this diagram about RNA transcription. What's the correct way to license and give credit? When I upload, do I say it's my "own work" and I'm the copyright holder? The original creator used Creative Commons Attributive 3.0 Unported -- does that mean I should also use CC 3.0? (Attribution, or Attribution ShareAlike?)
In addition to translating the text, I also altered some colors and reversed the orientation of the bottom RNA strand. Thanks for your help! Gaodifan (talk) 18:13, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Where to open semi-centralized questions?
Besides posting on its low-traffic talk page, is there another way to ask potentially interested editors about potential issues with a photo? In this particular case, File:Dong-Dang-Vietnam-China -border-150dpi.jpg looks bizarre and potentially doctored to me, but I’m not sure and I doubt asking at its talk page will really resolve anything. Is there a general place for this kind of question, like an analogue to enwiki’s WikiProjects? I'm only aware of Commons:Centralized discussion, AN, and Village Pump here. MarkH21 (talk) 18:38, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- @MarkH21: Since it is not clear what kind of concern you are trying to raise, it's hard to say where you would best raise it. Provenance? Discrepancy from some other image of the same thing? Suitability for a particular Wikipedia article? Could you be clearer what question you are wanting to raise? - Jmabel ! talk 22:45, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I’m asking if there is any place (besides the file talk, centralized discussions, and deletion discussions) to raise concerns about the legitimacy of a photo. In this particular case, the file claims to be a historical photo of a gate, but there’s a giant face imposed on the top of the gate in the image; the photo seems likely to have been altered. MarkH21 (talk) 23:08, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- @MarkH21: OK, so you believe the image is unlikely. And my same question remains, but let me be more specific: do you doubt the provenance of the image (whether it really came from the 22 September 1900 edition of L'Illustration)? Or are you saying that you think L'Illustration had an inaccurate representation of the gate? Or what? Do you have some other image of the gate that does not show a face like that as part of the design? Is this a concern about Commons hosting the image or about its use in the Wikipedia articles en:Friendship Pass, id:Gerbang Persahabatan and zh:友誼關? These would lead to different venues for discussion. - Jmabel ! talk 23:59, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I just wanted to ask if someone knew where this photo really came from or if someone knows of another image of the gate with the face on it (which no longer exists). So I don’t know if the image came from L'Illustration or if L'Illustration had an inaccurate representation. This isn’t about the usage of the image on other sister projects, or else I would just ask there. MarkH21 (talk) 00:26, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @MarkH21: If all you have is your own suspicion that something is wrong, and no evidence, all I really can suggest as a place to discuss that is en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Humanities. - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Alright, thanks. I really can’t imagine that the ancient gate had a giant frowny face above it, but I suspect it will take a bit of a deep digging to find another image of the gate. MarkH21 (talk) 01:02, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: Out of curiosity, what are the other venues to which you alluded? E.g. if I specifically doubted the provenance of the photo? The only venues on Commons that I know of are deletion nominations, Commons:Centralized discussion, AN, and VP. MarkH21 (talk) 21:52, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
- @MarkH21: Open-ended research question (or failing to work out historical stuff after the other things I'm about to mention): en:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Humanities, because it is the one place I can think of to ask for research.
- Provenance: I would start on the talk page, pinging the uploader; if I didn't get satisfaction there, I'd probably look to see if any of their other uploads looked suspicious, and whether they might have relied repeatedly on a particular source that might be doing dubious attributions.
- If I thought it came from where it said, but the French magazine had faked the image in the first place: I'd certainly start with articles about that magazine, trying to gauge its reputation. If it's reputation were solid, I'd probably consider the matter settled; if not, I'd have to think that through, not sure what I'd do next.
- If you had other images that suggested this one was faked, I'd have said at a minimum to tag it with {{Factual accuracy}}.
- And, of course, if I thought there was a problem with Wikipedia articles using a possibly fictional representation, I'd at least hit their talk pages, if not edit them myself. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

The decoration on the small building is visible on several photographs of the same era. For example, this blog has a collection of postcards (near the middle of the page). Best way to download a batch of files
In order to perform a machine learning study, I would like to download around 100 000 files from commons.wikimedia.org (around 10 Gbytes of data). However, I can't find a recommendation on the best way to do it for Wikimedia Commons servers. Should I download Wikimedia dumps (hundred of Gbytes) and parse them? or should I download all files, file-by-file leaving a 3 second sleep time between each downloaded file? Regarding HTTP requests, the former method looks better, whereas regarding the data size to be downloaded, the latter method looks better. Maybe there are also also other better methods. So I would love to have an advice from the community. Thanks!

However, all of these photos do not have dates, authors, or sources outside of where they have been posted on the internet. Speedy deletion notifications
I’m trying to find out which template was left, for example, at Special:Diff/422885155. (The template was subst’d.) I tried looking at Category:Message templates, but I can’t see it there. This template contains broken English, which I could help fix if I could find it. Brianjd (talk) 09:49, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- Brianjd, the bot nomination page at Commons:Bots/Requests/Deletion Notification Bot has some details. The templates the bot uses are subpages of the bots page, and are listed at Special:PrefixIndex/User:Deletion_Notification_Bot/ ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 10:56, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Alex Noble: Thanks. I’ve skimmed over the discussions and so far, I can’t tell why the bot is using its own templates rather than standard Commons templates. I might go back over them in detail when I have time. Brianjd (talk) 11:34, 1 June 2020 (UTC)
Insufficient permission for OTRS?
So today, two of the Tangle the Lemur cosplay photos I uploaded were speedily deleted even though I got the photographs' owner to send the OTRS consent forms, because of "insufficient permission"? I am not sure about this. Could it be because of the photographs being taken by someone else (as stated in the credits), depiction of someone dressed as a copyrighted character, or a reason I don't know? I can't see the ticket, so don't ask me about that? I may have to ask the owner to upload the files himself, because he considered that. PrincessPandaWiki (talk) 13:30, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello,
I transferred File:HomochittoRiver1974.jpg but it turns out that something is wrong with its templates. I don't know how to fix it, or maybe the file should (sadly) be deleted. I received a notice after posting a few hand written words taken from a 1536 document
Hello,
I am new with Wiki Commons, and a bit lost. I received this notice after posting a few hand written words taken from a 1536 document (from French explorer Jacques Cartier Journal)
This file is a derivative work incorporating another work or works. While the source of this file has been identified, the source(s) of the incorporated work(s) is/are missing essential source information. The author and source of the incorporated work must be given so that the copyright status can be verified.
What does the last sentence mean? Do one refer to original author (Jacques Cartier) or the entity who owns the manuscript today? This a 450+ years work, I thaught very old document were out of copywright?
Thanks

- If that is the one, the problem is that you are claiming that you (or someone) has granted a {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} license. That means you claim someone owns the copyright, and is granting a license. But presumably, by your own description, this is in the public domain. Seems to me this should be {{PD-old-100}}. - @S2rapoport: It's not so much the wrong forum, as a pretty broad request without any indication of what you already know how to do and whether you plan to do any of this yourself. You seem to be asking:
- How do I use the Wikimedia API to query on multiple categories and their subcategories? (By the way, you'll want some check against runaway category loops.)
- How do I use the Wikimedia API to get all metadata for a photo including any location data, either from templates or from EXIF data?
- … and maybe some other questions I can't parse apart from your original query.
- Am I missing something? Have you ever worked with the Wikimedia API at all (full disclosure: I haven't)? Are you asking someone to write the query for you, to aim you at the documentation, or what? - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

- @Pottablom: As a rule, copyright can only be transferred in writing. You would need to use the COM:OTRS system and send them a copy of the contract that transferred copyright to you. Attach a copy of the photo as well, so they know what photo you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 20:09, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Photo unjustly marked as possible copyright violation
Hello, Just received a message from Wikimedia commons today that an image that I posted (File:DTW LITC 020 iaa91.jpg) was a possible copyright violation. That surprised me, as I made the photograph myself!! User "Davey2010" is wrong. The same image has indeed been published at another site (www.driventowrite.com), where I am one of the authors. Davey2010's mistake may lay in the fact that I have used a different name when publishing the photo on Wikipedia because I did not want to use my real name (I used B. Lakerman on wikipedia). I hope Davey2010 hasn't wrongly sniffed out the several other pictures that I have published on Wikipedia recently....
Please amend the situation so that my photo is no longer incorrectly tagged as a copyright violation.
Thank you in advance,

- Regarding the copyright status of your photo, you will need to add a suitable licence notice to the website or, if this is not possible, contact OTRS to verify that the photo is yours. Brianjd (talk) 11:37, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- Clarification of "you will need to add a suitable licence notice to the website": you will need to indicate the license on www.driventowrite.com. You can do that either where the photo appears or, if it is more convenient, you can create an otherwise unlinked page on www.driventowrite.com to indicate the grant of license; either way, link that from the "Permission" field of {{Information}} on the Commons file page to indicate where the permission came from. - Jmabel ! talk 20:15, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Images mentioned as issued from the "Yorck project collection" in their individual Wikimedia Commons page, but absent from the "Category PD-Art Yorck project" pages
Hi,
The Wikimedia Commons Category "PD-Art Yorck project" displays 10235 images (mainly paintings) licenced under GNU-FDL (the collection is quite uneasy to navigate as titles might be in different languages or substituted by numbers and index may by be according to author (painter) last name, first name, title, with or without the article).
Most of those paintings/images can also be found in their Wikimedia Commons individual page (by author/painter name for instance, then category : paintings). On these individual pages we may find in the description section : "Source/photographer" = "The Yorck Project (2002) 10.000 Meisterwerke der Malerei (DVD-ROM), distributed by DIRECTMEDIA Publishing GmbH".
However at several occasions from such an individual page, when we then browse the Yorck project collection in Wikimedia Commons "Category PD-Art (Yorck project)" we cannot find the corresponding image, even checking various possible classifications (by title in different languages GB, FR, IT, D..., by author name, author first name...). Why ?
As an example please check the following individual page (François Boucher painting): "https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:François_Boucher_-_The_Mill.jpg", which does not seem to appear in the Yorck Project pages (neither at Francois nor Boucher nor "Le" nor "Moulin" nor "The" nor "Mill" nor "Die" nor "Mühle ...There are some other similar cases. For instance "the life stages" of Caspar David Friedrich, here in Wikimedia Commons as individual page : "https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Caspar_David_Friedrich_013.jpg", with Source/photographer "The Yorck project" but absent from the Yorck Project list (the Caspar David Friedrich 013.jpg is missing and apparently the painting does not show up elsewhere in the collection)
Any idea about this apparent inconsistency ? Shall we then consider that these images are part or not of the Yorck project, and are or not licensed under GNU-FDL ?
Thank you for your assistance fA — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2A01:CB08:75:F100:618C:4B46:E12E:4D34 (talk) 14:39, 3 June 2020 (UTC)

Missing information for an uploaded video
Hi, I have uploaded my first video but I think I did something wrong because I am asked by EugeneZelenko to add a missing information. I really don't know what he is talking about. I made this video from pictures taken from wikimedia commons, Flickr, publidomain.org etc... I have put together all the pictures myself so I thought I was the creator of this video and I guess I own all the copyrights of it. I am asked to "include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original". I don't understand this sentence : should I put all the original pictures I picked from this websites in my video ? EugeneZelenko also said "the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work" so should I list all the authors of the pictures I took from this websites even if it is clearly labelled near the modified picture in the video ? Besides, He said "If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source" I am sorry I am new here and I don't know how to do it. Can someone please help me ? I am sorry I don't know anything about copyrights I thought I had to put all the copyrights near the picture but I didn't know I had to do something else after. I would really appreciate your precious help. Thank you in advance (sorry for my English, I'm French...) DJAMS79 (talk) 15:42, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @DJAMS79: providing image credits in the video itself is fine, as long as it's done properly (see here for more info), but it doesn't hurt to provide the same references in the video description at File:Vidéo ET2, suite de l'explication de l'univers à des extra-terrestres.webm to make it easy for anyone to find the original. In fact, looking through the video, I see that at least some of the credits in the video don't include a link back to the original material, which is required by Creative Commons licenses. That can be difficult to include in a video, so putting in the description is the next best thing. You can use templates like {{Derived from}} or {{Attrib}} to easily make links to files on Wikimedia Commons. For other sites, like Flickr or publicdomain.org, a link back to the original plus the creator's name should suffice. I hope that helps explain things a little more. Feel free to ask here or on my user talk page if you need additional clarification or assistance. clpo13(talk) 18:49, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Can I upload a screenshot with this CC license?
Here's a link to the video: [4]. The license is: "Attribution 3.0 Unported (CC BY 3.0)" [5], which doesn't seem to quite fit the licenses to choose from when uploading, so I don't know if this CC license will work. Thanks Jauerbackdude?/dude. 16:32, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Jauerback: yes, that's an acceptable license. "Unported" means it's the generic version of CC BY 3.0, as opposed to a country-specific version. On Commons, use the template {{Cc-by-3.0}}. If you're using the Upload Wizard to upload the screenshot, choose "This file is not my own work" and then "Creative Commons Attribution 3.0" under the section "The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative Commons license". After uploading, you should add the template {{LicenseReview}} to the file page so that a license reviewer or administrator can verify that it matches the license on Vimeo (in case the uploader there changes the license or deletes the video). clpo13(talk) 18:24, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
Please give me some advice
Hello,
My category has suddenly been wiped out with no warning. It has existed since July 25, 2019 until today when it suddenly was deleted.
I was categorizing mosques in Karachi. There is Category:Katchi Memon Masjid, Karachi with

This is a photo of a monument in Pakistan identified as the SD-P-136
|
. There is (was) also Category:Memon Masjid, Karachi with

The article on enwiki:
. Suddenly I find the categories combined and mine being deleted by an admin who threatened to block me yesterday over the categorizing of one image. I tried communication with them but they told me not to. What am I to do? This admin doesn't like me for some reason and threatened to block me before over a few Sri Lanka cats.(The cats I made there are still used.) Now he seems to be after me on other categories. Please advise. Thanks, Kalbbes (talk) 20:13, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- @A.Savin: Could you please explain what is going on here? - Jmabel ! talk 20:43, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- We had two categories:
- Category:Memon Masjid, Karachi
- Category:Katchi Memon Masjid, Karachi, AFAICS with "Katchi" means "new"
- Despite this, both categories were about the same, because the pictures in both obviously show the same building. (I don't know where two different Heritage ID's come from; perhaps the other ID is about only one part of the ensemble, as often observed.)
- Since the Category:Katchi Memon Masjid, Karachi is the one with WD Infobox connected with WP and properly categorized (while the other one's only content was the ID template and "Category:Mosques in Karachi"), I've deleted the other one as duplicate.
- Kalbbes did not notice the deletion and continued to move files "the other way around"; I've reverted it; now they are obviously upset about this revert.

- We had two categories:
- Is is normal for an admin to repeatedly threaten to block an editor over a single instance in which they are personally involved? Yesterday's threats were over what they consider a wrong cat of a single image. And they were wrong, according to the enwiki article but I let it go. The same admin threatened to block me previously over a similarly minor issue. Threats to block have been their only communication to me.
- I realize that I will be reverted; that doesn't bother me. It is part of categorizing on the Commons and has always ended well. I don't take reversions personally. It's the threats emanating from an admin to block me over really minor problems that scare me because that admin can do it.
- Is collaboration not valued on the Commons? I would have liked to resolve the matter through communication as I have with other editors. What is considered normal on the Commons? What is considered ideal? Kalbbes (talk) 23:44, 3 June 2020 (UTC)
- What is exactly, in your opinion, "a single instance in which [I am] personally involved"? Maybe you mean this: a) Obvious vandalism by Kalbbes [6], b) I revert it [7], c) once again the same vandalism by Kalbbes, as if nothing happened [8], d) I revert it again [9]. Well OK, but I have to disappoint you: reverting vandalism does not inevitably make the reverter involved.
- And, to be honest, I don't get what you are trying to achieve now? Your question was about the Memon Mosque categories, I think I have explained it sufficiently. --A.Savin 01:34, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
- I apologize for upsetting you. I did not realize what was happening at the time and was not intentionally reverting you. If we had a discussion on my talk page we could have settled this.
- I am tired but I will try to explain, hopefully clearly.
- Regarding the embassy, the article on enwiki says that the area I was trying to put the embassy in is thriving and and is where embassies are.
- Regarding the mosque, I always follow the "cultural heritage" and/or enwiki name, and I would have preferred to deal with the differing numbers with some thought. What is the rush? You didn't give me time to adjust to what was happening. There are other images of that mosque in other categories, so I don't think it is clear to other editors that the name you use applies to that building. The existence of an infobox should not be a reason for a less-than-useful name for a category.
- Threatening to block me is not a reasonable way of clarifying issues.
- If you look just above your threats on my talk page, you will see a discussion about one of the last times I was reverted.
- Please don't assume I am motivated by evil. I am always willing to accommodate. Please believe that. And as I explained before to you, I have trouble noticing that warning bell or whatever it is at the top. I check it now and then, but I'm not going to realize anything it indicates instantly, within a few minutes, especially when I'm absorbed which I usually am. Kalbbes (talk) 03:55, 4 June 2020 (UTC)
