Help! Should we be deleting spammers' talk pages?

We have had many old spammer IP talk pages deleted in the last day. I think this is a poor idea and quite unnecessary, but others see it differently, so maybe I'm missing something.

I was a bit looking around to see what has been deleted, and I found this list of deleted XLinkBot warnings .. These even seem to go automatically!! (indef blocked spammers get automatically tagged as 'temporary users', and those pages can be deleted after 30 days .. if I understand correctly from CAT:TEMP a bot is even doing that automatically). Now most of the data there is regarding youtube and blogspot additions, but yet more of loss of valuable information. --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:54, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
I restored some of the XlinkBot talk pages. Many were automatically deleted because they had a general-purpose block template which automatically assigned them to Category:Temporary Wikipedian userpages. When I restored them, I went back and removed Category:Temporary Wikipedian userpages from the block language. Note that until a few months ago, our indefinite blocked spammer templates also included Category:Temporary Wikipedian userpages however I managed to get that changed. In the meantime, there are (or were) a number of indefinitely blocked spammers' talk pages with older templates that are still marked "temporary".
If another admin gets the chance, can he/she look at some more deleted talk pages from the XLinkBot list above. I ran out of time. --A. B. (talk • contribs) 07:20, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

I came across this site when analyzing a repost after AfD that had a review form this site. This may actually have been posted in good faith, so I haven't notified the poster, but it has the following prominent link and section:

Hi this is Alishah.

Can you guys please have a look at the discussion article Talk:Khalilullah Khalili Where a new user came up with some copied comments and a link to which i think is not only an Spam but also has many adult views. I think this is unappropriated and specially very abusive when our little brothers often go to have to face these links due to their research. Please please help I am new and I am not sure what to do when such links are provided furthermore I don't know if they are allowed to post these links in discussion, and I don't know if I am allowed to RV the discussion page. Dynamic IP keeps adding the same links to the same articles, they are ad-ridden dynamic websites built out of templates, all hosted on the same IP and server (wget shows that each website returns the exact same HTTP headers). For example, to Abbottabad it adds abbottabadpoint.com. From the contributions of the latest IP:

User posted on a variety of application pages new external links for his company's application breakdown feature. The breakdown, that shows basic information such as how many files and functions are included in a package, do not provide any benefit to the articles they are displayed in. Edits have been reverted and user re-adds them. All of his edits are in regards to this spam. He recently added a few discussion posts describing the sites and making veiled threats against those that edit them out:

He mentions in one Talk post: "The design documentation and metrics is currently free of charge to Apache Tomcat developers and downloaders. However, if you or anyone removes the external reference to the Apache Tomcat design and metrics site, I will have to suspend free entry to this site to the entire Apache Tomcat community, and whoever removed the external references link can answer to them."

Spam on Grace O'Malley page

Pirate lass has attempted to post at least two articles on Wikipedia, apparently about unpublished books, which were speedy deleted. She (?) then instead started adding an entry on the Grace O'Malley page about Rob Rover's tales here, with a link to an external website, and this appears to have nothing to do with Grace O'Malley other than being a book that happens to mention her. No attempt was made to assert the book's notability, so I deleted it. It was reposted by Pirate Lass again, I deleted it again, and then the same link was added by Litterature lover. I deleted it again, warning about sockpuppetry, only for the same link to be added yet again, this time an anonymous edit by 83.205.224.227. Differential scanning calorimetry

I'm not too sure about this one - it's a bit subtle. On the page there was a perfectly good Infobox chemical analysis with a picture of a typical machine. There are now two identical Infoboxes, with different pictures - the latest one has been put up by User:Mtsales and shows (not surprisingly) a MT DSC. User:Acsociety appear to have been placing links to his own (as claimed on user page) social networking and forum site, LAShTAL.com. Since the site also claims to be the home of the "Aleister Crowley Society", the account would appear to be a role account as well. Will in China (talk) 03:56, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

This is, in my opinion, unreasonable. LAShTAL.COM is not a "social networking and forum site", it is the definitive non-partisan site relating to Aleister Crowley. It is non-commercial and impartial and is generally considered the definitive Asite relating to Aleister Crowley. The forums exist in order to enable discussion of issues raised elsewhere on the site, which is actually centred upon Galleries, news articles, an extensive Wiki-based online encyclopedia, and so on. To have this site described as "spam" is, frankly, astonishing. Its presence here could only be justified, in my opinion, by the ill-advised selection of my user name. The site in question has been running for the best part of 10 years online in various forms, and currently contains lots of unique material on the subjects in question (Aleister Crowley, Thelema, etc.), such as an archive of scanned news articles going back 100 years, an illustrated user-edited subject-bibliography with over 700 titles, subject-specific image galleries with close to 2,000 images, dozens of user-submitted book reviews, its own Thelemic time server web-app that is used by dozens of other Thelemic and non-Thelemic websites, as well as its own user-edited encyclopedia, (yes...) forums and an unselfish listing of over 100 links to other worthy websites in the same category. It is the main community website for the subject-area that has also been listed in the Open Directory Project for many years. It does not use advertising, or even send out emails to its user-base, and it has the support of the Aleister Crowley estate (Ordo Templi Orientis), so clearly it is not "spam". As with many community websites, there are occasionally fallings out with some members, which might perhaps explain what seems to have been a campaign by one or two Wikipedians against this site; but it would be an absurdity for it to be listed as spam. It is clearly a social networking site which is defined as "online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services.". You even admit this in your last sentence, "As with many community websites, there are occasionally fallings out with some members" - if it has members, it is a social networking site. In addition, much of the content you claim requires creating an account to access the content. That violates point 6 of WP:ELNO: "Links to sites that require payment or registration to view the relevant content". Spamming does not refer to the content of the site in any case, it refers to the repeated placement of links to the site in violation of Wikipedia policy, for example, the two points just listed and our conflict of interest policy, which prohibits site owners from promoting their own sites on Wikipedia. Whilst the site does have forums, as Qualer mentioned at Talk:Aleister_Crowley before you circumvented the discussion there by attempting to have the site completely blacklisted here, it is a bit of a "grey area" because the site has much else besides. You are wrong about the sign-up requirements -- only the sections where there are real or potential copyright issues (the bibliography and galleries) require registration. In my view, this will require arbitration from someone with a lot more experience on Wikipedia than either of us; but I think we should at least finish the discussion at Talk:Aleister_Crowley. The "attempt to recruit people" would be more honestly stated as an appeal for Wikipedia specialists to provide assistance to oppose a bizarre vendetta against the site. Will in China is making a concerted effort to remove all links to LAShTAL.COM from Wikipedia, despite the site being generally considered a subject-expert site representing all the various factions, seemingly as part of a series of anti-site activities that include the submission of the site to real spamming engines. LAShTAL.COM is a serious, impartial site dedicated to the subject matter of those subject articles to which links have been added. I seek third-party arbitration rather than his/her petty vandalism. For neutral moderators, i can say that my wiki experience with Will in China is that he/she doesnt have Crowleys or Thelemas best interest in mind. His/her agenda seems to be to present a flawed and unbalamced picture of Crowley and Thelema. Any time that i have made reasonable suggestions to improve their respective pages WillinChina has blocked any attempt to improve the articles. And he/she seems to have "unique" ideas about Thelema that would find little quarter in the Thelemic and occult community. lashtal.com isnt a spam site or a social networking site. Lashtal.com is closer to a media/news site for Thelemites globally that does a reasonable job of portraying and representing Thelema in all its many and varied forms. Its own rules are such that it needs to be impartial and neutral in its reporting, so it is so far removed from a spam site, i cant see how Willinchina could see itthat way. Unless of course he/she has a chip on their shoulder about the site....

I've noticed several links to akacool.com's anime store go by while I've been on new-user patrol tonight, most recently http://www.akacool.com/1210/saber-marionette/, which was added to Saber Marionette. The MO is that a new username will sign up and then, in the first edit or two, will add the shopping page of items most gemane to a given article to that article's ELs. There aren't terribly many of these additions extant on en.wiki at this time, but since I've reverted two or three myself just tonight, a campaign or some sort might be just starting to pick up steam. There does seem to be one (but only one) salutory use for links back to akacool.com: it seems to be a great place to rip off fair-use scans of Pokémon cover art (e.g., File:Pokemonseason3DVDvol1.jpg), and akacool.com is linked in several WP:FUC sourcing statements.

I realized when I checked back here this afternoon that I had carelessly forgotten, before I went to bed last night, to let you know I had posted here or add a link to this thread to the Template:Tl template message I had left you earlier. My apologies. I'm glad to see that the information proved unnecessary, and that you knew right where to go and found your way here without trouble.
In the realm of merchandising, the "Click & Compare Prices" links prominently featured in each of the item subpages, in conjunction with the site's Terms and Conditions' statement that, "Akacool does not warranty that the quality of any products, services, information, or other materials purchased or obtained by you through our affiliated web sites [emphasis mine] meet your specific requirements," does give me pause. Whereas the Anime News Network actually seems to produce or at least aggregate substantial news content, all akacool.com seems to do is list what is currently commercially available and then expedite the purchase of it.
This site would seem to fall under WP:LINKSTOAVOID (particularly criteria 4 and 5), and in addition, there's not even any indication that the site is a reliable source for any information of real value vis à vis the articles where its links have been included.
