+1 support

[edit]

I know I can't vote here yet, but I'm not aware of anything preventing me from a fake sort of "beating the nom" by posting to the talk page.

I shall certainly be supporting this user, having recently had cause to interact with him, and, being the person I am, treating that interaction as my cue to look at his contributions.
All I can do is parrot the old "I can't believe he isn't one already" cliche, because that was the vibe I went away with. Begoon (talk) 23:43, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

!Voting at XfDs

[edit]

Epeefleche asked a question about a particular AfD, which deserves a longer answer than an RfA easily permits (not least, when the candidate fails to read the question properly...)

I've tended to only !vote in XfDs when I have something to add - I wouldn't normally !vote keep if it's obvious that the XfD is going to be snow-closed keep anyway.

In this particular case the vast majority of the !Votes were keep; aside from the nom and one other !vote, mine was the only delete (I actually !voted to delete or merge). At the time many details of the event were still up in the air, including the exact location if I remember rightly, and I felt that a counter !vote had merit, even if I was likely to "lose".

Perhaps more importantly here is how I handled the closure (badly, IMHO). Closure is of obvious importance in RfAs, since an admin would be expected to close XfDs frequently. Clearly this was AfD was part of my learning curve - I learned something about non-admin closures! For the record, if I was required to close this particular AfD today (assuming, obviously, that I was uninvolved) I'd close with a snow keep.

Which leads me on to the difference between regular editing and admin actions. Another comment in the RfA addressed an answer I'd given at WP:ANI with respect to WP:RFPP. My suggestions as a regular editor may well differ from the actions I'd take if I had the mop. I'm very used to "punting" issues to various venues (RFPP, AIV, SPI, etc) and letting cooler heads deal with the issues. I'm also familiar with being a cooler head at those venues. As an editor I might suggest that someone request something that I might not be prepared to do as an admin. For example, I might suggest - as a regular editor - RFPP (and protection) as a possible solution. I'd expect an admin to consider less restrictive options to protection (blocking, for example). I believe the same applies at XfDs - I might well !vote with a minority; I certainly wouldn't close for the minority.
