ArcAngel's Oppose

Incorrect image tagging? Out of the 10,000+ images he's tagged correctly, why are we discussing 3 mistakes? -FASTILY (TALK) 21:32, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
- Because that's what people do at RFA, where one error cancels out several thousand good contributions. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:24, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
- Those are the two I could find viewing a small sample of his image uploads (probably 4-5 pages worth of them), and it's the only ones I know to be errors. Of more concern, I see him just slapping template rationales on things, I don't see any real understanding from that of what the nonfree content policy actually requires. There isn't any thought behind those rationales, it's upload, template, done—and that's led to mistakes due to a lack of deep understanding. If I saw a lot of other rationales that really indicated a thoughtful, deep understanding, I'd probably think differently, but it seems to be "Oh, it's a video game—slap a nonfree box cover/logo on it, there's a template for that!" - If you seriously doubt this candidate's policy knowledge that much, I suggest you pose some questions in the "questions for the candidate section" instead of basing your oppose on three very human errors. -FASTILY (TALK) 23:34, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for your suggestion, but if I found edits of a candidate swearing at people in their recent history, I wouldn't ask them "Do you know it's important to be civil?", I'd oppose them on the grounds that their recent behavior already shows they don't. Just taking another quick look, I've already found one more replaceable nonfree image, OnLive.jpg. As I've speedy tagged it, I should note here that it's a video game console that, from its article, is still clearly in existence, and so replaceability is as easy as asking someone who owns one to pull out a camera. That's not just a case of missing that a game's open source, it's a fundamental lack of understanding of what the nonfree content policy means (that images must not be replaceable). Now don't get me wrong, normally erroneous image uploads wouldn't concern me that much—I understand the nonfree content policies are not our easiest policies to understand sometimes, and I wouldn't normally oppose someone over a few errors there. However, when I'm seeing a candidate wanting to perform administrative tasks in that area and claiming their nonfree content uploads are "their best work" (which is a bit of a concern in itself), recent mistakes in that very area become a very significant issue. I didn't ask a question because there's not an answer that would change my mind, some time would need to pass and the candidate's work improve in practice first. - From your statement, it seems you are trying to tell me that that uploading two or three images which are non-compliant with WP:NFCC#1 are as unforgivable an offense as swearing/incivility. And frankly, even if that is the case, note that Salvat has uploaded 3,577 images. I wonder then, despite the 3 he erred on, how he managed to get the rest of the 3,574 correct. Like I mentioned above, if you want to test the candidate's policy knowledge, ask him some questions. sigh... -FASTILY (TALK) 01:06, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- I am absolutely not saying that the issue is "unforgivable". Like I said above, I'd not generally oppose someone for a few nonfree content mistakes, whereas I would oppose someone for incivility or rudeness, and I'd be happy to reconsider after a few months if the candidate has improved by then. The only reason that that's such an issue here is because that's exactly what the candidate plans to do. The rest of the uploads are just boilerplate rationales, which really don't show any knowledge aside from how to slap a template on a file page, and I haven't checked them all. In checking a random sampling (probably 20-30 uploads, wasn't keeping count), I found 3 errors. I don't know if that would hold true for all the uploads. Maybe I chanced upon the only 3 that were wrong. But I just don't see strong policy knowledge in practice, and that's what's important. Regurgitating policy in answer to a question is a whole lot different than applying it in actuality, and I'm far more concerned with seeing that a candidate has already done the latter. Others have image concerns, why was my !vote singled out for discussion? ArcAngel (talk) 16:56, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
- Presumably because we have issues with his policy knowledge. You only pointed out that he had made errors; you said nothing of him not understanding policy. Simply saying that he makes errors is a weak oppose basis, since we all make errors. Regards, --—Cyclonenim | Chat 20:28, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
