the questions on IAR and BLP
[edit]The candidate gave an answer supporting a very broad view of IAR. An admin whose extremely broad use of IAR has been challenged here led him on by giving his extreme view, that it was the way we should routine operate "to use IAR every single time" . This is not how IAR is used in Wikipedia. It has happened that people have used questioning at IAR to build support for their positions in a disputed matter, and that is what happens here. I really hope the candidate does not hold the view he agreed to, but if he does he does acept the basic ways we work and must not be trusted with the buttons; if he does not, he should have seen through the motivation of the question.
Similarly with the question on BLP, where probably the most atypical of all BLPs in recent history was given as the example. Again, I hope the candidate did not mean what he said in saying he would close evenly balanced afds to delete. If he does mean otherwise, again, he should have realised the nature of the question.
I think the questioner was unfair to the candidate to lead him into such traps a situation, and I've let him know about this posting. DGG ( talk ) 05:54, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
- It wasn't a trick question, the only purpose was to see if he truly understood the meaning of IAR. I don't know why so many people think that IAR is something that admins and other users only use to be controversial, it is something that we use for everyday decisions. We shouldn't have to look at policy pages every time we make a decision, instead our common sense judgment and experience with Wikipedia should tell us what to do, this isn't saying that we should always override community consensus, quite the opposite in fact; the only stipulation that I made in concerns to IAR was that it shouldn't be viewed as something controversial.
- The BLP question has been asked at dozens of RFAs over the past few months, so I don't even feel a need to answer that as no one has brought up a problem with it before. Please AGF. — Coffee // have a cup // ark // 06:09, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
Coffee, I do assume good faith. I assume you are honestly trying to advocate your views on IAR, not to trap people. I think you honestly and in good faith hoped the candidate would agreeing with your views, as well as bystanders. As for the BLP question, I too have sometimes asked questions for which there is no generally acceptable answer, but I have said so. You probably did think that understood. I apologize for using the word "trap", and I have stricken it and replaced it by another more neutral term. I was wrong to use it. DGG ( talk ) 15:02, 24 January 2010 (UTC)
