Recording process
Prepare → Record (Read) → Upload → Add → Notify

When you've made your recording, and are ready to upload, go to the upload page on Wikimedia Commons.

Step 1: Choose the filename

The filename must be prefixed by "En-" to show that the recording is in English, followed by the article title in canonicalized form and finally the suffix "-article", as well as the ogg extension. An example would be: En-Sample lemma-article.ogg

Step 2: Fill out the template

Copy and paste the following template, and fill in the appropriate information. If you're unsure of what to say in each field, look below.

Categories and the information template will be added automatically by using this template.

Legend

title: The title of the actual article
- (e.g., Sample)
user_name_link: A link to your Wikipedia user page
- (e.g., [[:en:User:John Q. Public|John Q. Public]])
date: The date the article was recorded on in the YYYY-MM-DD format
- (e.g., 2013-04-15)
accent: The regional accent of the reader. If you are unsure of your accent, see regional accents of English speakers for several possibilities.
- (e.g. Californian English)
sex: The sex of the narrator. Use either 'f' for female, or 'm' for male.
- (e.g. m)
link_to_recorded_version: The link should be a link to the revision that was read.
- (e.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia&oldid=889056170)

How to fill in the link to the recorded version

Step 1

With the article you're narrating, go to its revision history. You will see a list of edits made to the article, with each list entry being similar to the following example:

(cur | prev) 03:54, 23 March 2019 ExampleUser (talk | contribs) . . (239,133 bytes) (+318) . . (The original PDF didn't mention the date of Jan 15. Replaced it with this) (undo | thank) (Tag: Visual edit)

One of these list entries will correspond with the version of the article that you have read. This will most likely be the one at the top of the list, if nobody has made any edits since you accessed the page. The date and time, highlighted in bold characters in the above example, will be a link to a historical version of the article. Hover your mouse pointer over it, and you will see something like this:

This is the link required in the spoken article template field.

Step 2

Right-mouse-click on this link, and from the menu that appears, select the option that copies the link itself into your clipboard.

In the Firefox web browser, select Copy link location.
In Internet Explorer, select Copy shortcut.
In Konqueror, Chrome and Opera, select Copy link address.

Step 3

Return to the upload page where you're filling in the template fields, and using the paste command, copy the link from your clipboard to the space directly after the |link_to_recorded_version= parameter. This is usually accessed with a right-mouse-click.

For multiple-part recordings

In addition, if the recording is broken up into a number of parts, you need to add a line or two to let listeners navigate to:

the first recorded part of the article, in case they start somewhere in the middle, and
the next recorded part of the article, once they've listened to the current part.

The following should be added just below the |sex= parameter:

For each part except the first (there's no need for the first file to link to itself), add |first_part=En-Sample_1ofn-article.ogg.
For each part except the last (since there would be no "next file" after the last), add |next_part=En-Sample_nofn-article.ogg.

Step 3: Upload the file

Uploaded files can be no larger than 100 mb. If your recording is larger than this, you will need to split it into multiple parts.

When the upload is finished and the file page appears, it's a good idea to add the page to your watch-list, as reviews and discussion of your recording may be put there.
