Purpose of this hearing
[edit]- Discussing the possibility of outlining a policy which grants administrators the right to block Wikipedia users who have made off-wiki personal attacks or outing of information in cases where the off-wiki account is linked to the Wikipedia account.
Statements
[edit]Statement by PaoloNapolitano
[edit]The website Wikipedia Review hosts "criticism" of Wikipedia. Several users of the site, many of whom are also registered Wikipedia editors. What is alarming is that several of the users involved in the outing and personal attacks of Wikipedia users are constructive contributors to WP. I have no idea what their motivation for doing so is.
We don't allow personal attacks and outing on-wiki. But the truth is, that many of the worst personal attacks happen at WR, written by users who have disclosed themselves the connection between their Wikipedia account and their WR account. No matter what they write at WR, there is no policy that allows for the blocking of their WP account. They can make death threats, etc, but we don't have any policy that grants admins the right to block users in cases where the WR account is linked to a WP account. Many of these users edit Wikipedia constructively while their WR "alter ego" makes hateful posts about fellow WP users. The editors are our main resource who we should protect from outing and personal attacks, off-wiki and on-wiki. PaoloNapolitano 22:41, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Oppose Duplicates existing policy and would be subject to gaming. There would be no way of preventing someone from impersonating a Wikipedia user on WR and then intentionally making attacks. Nobody Ent 22:49, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

- Oppose as proposed, but I think we do need a Wikipedia:External conduct policy to spell out more clearly what off-wiki conduct is sanctionable and why. I've had some thoughts along those lines, drawing on past arbitration decisions in particular, and will post them in due course. Prioryman (talk) 23:06, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose. The Arbitration Committee has already latitude to deal with these matters. Snowolf How can I help? 23:14, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
- Oppose. Now, close per WP:SNOW and let's have an RfC on uploading copyright images of real life people to pretend to be someone you're not. Actually, nevermind, we don't even need an RfC to indef block for that.VolunteerMarek 23:17, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
