Closed as Successful 9/1 clear consensus for promotion -- Enfcer (talk) 19:22, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings friends!
After receiving several suggestions to do so, I have decided to stand before the community and offer my service as an administrator. I have been active on Simple English Wikipedia since Vermont brought me here from EnWiki earlier this year. I have written a few articles and wikified some others, but content creation is not a forte of mine. Instead, I would put the tools to work against vandalism, performing administrative activities such as working on deprecated errors by importing fresh copies of templates and updating relevant information, working at RfD, RfU, and ANI, and other less visible but still crucial activities. As of late, my presence on-wiki has been limited by off-wiki work for on-wiki results. I'm referring to the creation, development, and implementation of CabalBot which supports our dedicated community of anti-vandalism editors on IRC.
I feel it is very important for sysops to be accessible to the community. My signature contains a link where editors may reach me via IRC nearly 24 hours a day. Additionally, if an editor is unwilling or unable to access IRC, I am alerted immediately to new talk page messages via IRCbots. I place great emphasis on listening to the community and considering feedback presented to me on my work and my mistakes. I truly believe the mistakes I've made here are as important as my contributions. As an editor on this project, I have learned from nearly every active admin, and I look forward to continuing to learn from my peers.
I have identified to the WMF and work as an OTRS Agent and with EnWiki ACC. This special experience further equips me to support unique situations as an admin. While it may be uncommon on this project, I'd still very much enjoy working with outreach programs and ambassadors. In the future, I hope to continue gaining knowledge, trust, and skill necessary to pursue CheckUser and Oversight.
From a technical standpoint, I believe I have the skill and knowledge necessary to implement the tools appropriately and without causing harm the project. Further, I would protect the project from vandalism, LTAs, and the ever-growing list of lint problems and administrative tasks.
Most importantly, I wish to serve the community and your trust. I look forward to the community's feedback. Thank you for your time. Operator873talkconnect 19:17, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Candidate's acceptance: self-nomination
Support
[change source]- Support: Operator873 is a trustworthy, responsible, dedicated user who I believe would make a great administrator. He is knowledgeable, experienced in the field of anti-vandalism, knows how to deal with LTA's, and would overall be a positive influence on the project with sysop tools. Vermont (talk) 21:24, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support. I was a bit on the fence here, but his reply to Djsasso more than convinced me that he will be a fine admin. Overall would be a positive, he's made some pretty impressive contributions since starting off here. Hiàn (talk) 23:22, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Support I liked his answer. Probably one of the more thought out replies I have seen on an RfA. -DJSasso (talk) 11:20, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Support, why not?? -BRP ever 11:49, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Support Looks trustworthy and dedicated, as Vermont said. Knightrises10 (talk) 17:17, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support. I don't see why not. Despite being a self-nom, Operator873 would be a fine admin. Certainly a heck of a lot more active on here than I am! Best of luck with the mop. DaneGeld (talk) 20:16, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support: Competent candidate and well answered the question. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 06:48, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support A great candidate. Crasstun (talk | contributions) 00:12, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support As far as I can see at IRC, Operator873 is a great user, consistently fighting vandalism, and thus would be a good sysop. —Thanks for the fish! talk•contribs 20:13, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose
[change source]- My thoughts are not positive, but also not entirely negative. Tending to 'No' are these points:
- Too early, far too early. First arrival June 2018.
- Not so needed as to make an exception. We've just promoted two excellent admins, and no-one could argue that we need more at the present. That can also be read as untimely.
- Self-proposal. In view of the untimeliness, this seems to me to be significant.
- Doesn't offer us a skill we need. For example, not familiar with languages we struggle with at present. Also, acknowledges that he will not be doing extensive text editing. This is often needed, given the rotten state of many new pages here.
Editors often underestimate the task of being an admin on this wiki because the job is so very different from their experience on English wiki. This is a good person whose actions here have been fine. I just don't think there is a real case for promoting him at present. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:36, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Comments
[change source]- Not opposing yet as I still have to think about it as I do feel the Operator873 is a good editor but not sure about admin, they just already have a number of knocks against them in how I typically evaluate a candidate, Self-noms and especially people who are targeting other hats (CU/OS) before they even have the admin hat to me generally smack of hat collecting. And hat collectors usually end up the worst kinds of administrators historically. If people were suggesting you should be an admin they should have put their money where their mouths were and nominated you. Also have been here less than a year and I usually don't support under a year either because I like them to have the experience of the wiki beyond just vandal fighting. -DJSasso (talk) 19:28, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- @Djsasso: - I understand your concerns and I'd like to address them. I generally dislike self-noms as well, but decided perhaps it was the best course of action in this situation. As to hat collecting, I do not believe setting goals for myself constitutes hat collecting. When I do not need a permission or plan to use it, I have demonstrated on EnWiki I ask for it to be removed. CU and OS are positions of trust and responsibility that I hope to be qualified for at some point. My mentioning these roles was to indicate not that I want to collect hats or bits, but that I am devoted to constructively participating in the project and I'm not a passing editor that decided, "Hey, lets see if I can do this." I appreciate your comments and concerns, and I hope I can assuage your concerns. I thank you for your participation here. Operator873talkconnect 19:47, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Clarification - After re-reading my original message on the RfA itself, it could be construed I plan to immediately look towards CU or OS.
...In the future, I hope to continue gaining knowledge, trust, and skill necessary to pursue CheckUser and Oversight.
From a technical standpoint, I believe I have the skill and knowledge necessary to implement the tools appropriately and without causing harm the project...
- The above portion of my statement reads weirdly. As a matter of clarification, I wish it to be known I believe several years of up-standing service as a sysop should be expected before these positions of trust are even sought. My comment was intended to convey CU/OS was a future possibility after a few years and that I feel I have a good foundation of knowledge regarding the role of sysop. - Is your page usually political? -- Mentifisto 17:58, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Sunday is Armistice/Veterans day. Operator873 is a U.S. Air Force veteran. It is not political. Vermont (talk) 18:14, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- @Mentifisto: - As Vermont said, Sunday is the 11th day of the 11th month on which current and former military members of any nation are remembered and thanked for their service. It is not a political statement at all. Instead, the image on my userpage is a tribute to the Veterans honored by the holiday in many nations known by different names (Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, Veterans Day, Poppy Day, etc). As a Veteran, it is important to me to honor and thank those who go in my place. That being said, and to answer your primary question, my userpage typically looks like this.
