TinEye detects it was once at Commons, but the file has been deleted as a potential copyvio - Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Dinozaurus. While FoP now exists for all Russian buildings, this copyvio discovery makes any FoP revelation irrelevant. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 02:48, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Image from Iran, seemingly copyrighted in Iran. WP:PD requires that such images be considered non-free, despite being legally in the public domain in the US. Suggest relicense to non-free or delete. Wikiacc (¶) 09:08, 1 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Wikiacc: Exactly where in the guideline of WP:PD does it say that? It's a long document and I'd rather not read it completely in detail because you weren't specific, but if you're referring to
When a work has not been published in the US but in some other country, that other country's copyright laws also must be taken into account.
you are mistaken. That sentence explains that the copyright status in the US can depend on the copyright law of the source country, which would be true when talking about, say, URAA. PD-USonly is accepted on English Wikipedia as far as I know. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 14:35, 1 January 2021 (UTC)- @Alexis Jazz: I should've linked to the section in the nomination, sorry about that. WP:PD#Countries without copyright treaties with the US. It's a weird exception to the general "PD-USonly is accepted on English Wikipedia" rule. If you have strong feelings about it, feel free to open a community discussion; back in 2005 the policy was implemented basically by Jimbo's say-so. Wikiacc (¶) 00:03, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- Though (I hadn't seen this before) note also this 2012 RFC. Wikiacc (¶) 01:31, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Wikiacc: Thanks, I've updated {{PD-USonly}} to reflect that. I changed the license on File:Semnan Damghan train collision.jpg to fair use. (any idea about a more appropriate template for that? we can't take a new photo of this) I guess File:Semnan Damghan train collision wreckage.jpg can be deleted. I think it does make sense all things considered, as with the San Marino example below, it requires re-evaluating files in the event a country becomes a member of the Berne convention, so I won't be starting a community discussion. I was simply unaware of this exception to PD-USonly. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 04:23, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz:, thanks, that should settle it. From a quick glance at the tag list, I think fair use is the appropriate template (though between this and this I'm starting to wonder if we need {{Non-free train crash}}...) Wikiacc (¶) 06:20, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Wikiacc: I'd suggest {{Non-free event}}, for any event that won't happen again and meets the NFCC. (train crash, historic speech, etc) — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 00:14, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Image from Iran, seemingly copyrighted in Iran. WP:PD requires that such images be considered non-free, despite being legally in the public domain in the US. As a photo of a living person, it is unlikely to meet WP:NFCC#1, so I suggest delete. Wikiacc (¶) 09:13, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

- @4nn1l2 and Hanooz: After searching a bit I found File:Mohammad Hossein Jalali 2020-01-18.jpg which lead me to https://www.farsnews.ir/photo/13981028000937/همايش-گام-دوم-طرح-مدرسه-آماده. I've uploaded File:School principals education conference in Iran 3 (Farsnews 13981028000937) (cropped).jpg and I'm pretty sure this is the same Mohammad Hossein Jalali, but I hope you can confirm this as looking up info is difficult for me due to the language barrier. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 03:40, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- The photo is also included on [1]. (above the text "ستاد قرارگاه خاتم(ص) در بخش دوم") I can only guess that the current file source got it there. (I wonder what the caption says) There is mention of an ISBN there, 978-600-5443-68-4 but I'm not sure if that means this is that book. With Special:BookSources/9786005443684 a publication date could perhaps be found. As copyright expires 30 years after publication according to c:Template:PD-Iran it is likely public domain anyway. This file was deleted from Commons following c:User talk:GTVM92/2018#File tagging File:Mohammad Hossein Jalali.jpg. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 04:56, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: Same guy. I added his picture to his fawiki article: fa:محمدحسین جلالی. The said book was published in 1395 SH (~ 2016). That doesn't necessarily mean the image is still protected. It might have been previously published elsewhere, but evidence is required. 4nn1l2 (talk) 08:45, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- @4nn1l2: Thanks. I've updated the photo here as well. (also on Aerospace Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, List of commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics (Iran)) The photo being discussed here would be eligible for undeletion in 2047 (if no earlier source is found in the meantime), no? (I don't think enwiki has it's own undeletion categories, perhaps there is a page somewhere to keep track of this) — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 08:54, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
- @4nn1l2: Yes, but I have strong feelings that the Iranian copyright law will have been changed by then. It's already old enough. It dates back to 1970. A new copyright law is still being prepared since 2010! Hopefully that would be enacted before Wikipedia's gradual death :-) 4nn1l2 (talk) 09:23, 3 January 2021 (UTC)

Photograph of a sculpture in San Marino, claimed PD because "Depicted statue is located in San Marino which is not a participant in the Berne Convention." San Marino is a member of the Berne Convention (as of September 2020), though even if it weren't, WP:PD does not allow this kind of reasoning. Because the current use of this photo in a gallery would not meet WP:NFCC, I suggest delete, unless evidence can be found that this sculpture is public domain in San Marino. Derivative work of non-free packaging, see c:COM:Packaging. It is too complex to be in the public domain in my opinion, and the packaging is the main focus of the work. Dylsss(talk contribs) 20:27, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

- Delete wouldn't survive on Commons. Fair use may be considered, but would require a crop. (I could crop the image for Dettol and Lysol if needed, ping me, but I've never seen similar fair use images so not sure this would be appropriate) — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 00:25, 3 January 2021 (UTC)
