Non-free logos in Discovery Travel & Living

The result of the discussion was: Delete File:Discovery Travel & Living.svg, keep File:Discovery Travel & Living logo.svg -FASTILY 01:56, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Each of these files is being used in the main infobox of Discovery Travel & Living. According to Wikpedia aticle about the channel, it is defunct and has been replaced by another channel. It might be OK to keep these files as historical representations of the channels branding, but it's not clear why both are required in the main infobox. The main infobox should use the most current logo, or in this case the last logo used by the channel; so, it's not clear which of the two was the last logo used by the channel, but the one that wasn't probably would not meet WP:NFC#cite_note-4 and should be deleted.
There is, however, another problem having to do with WP:NFCC#1. Someone recently uploaded c:File:Discovery Travel & Living logo.svg to Commons. If it's assumed that the Commons file is an acceptable free alternative for either of these two non-free ones, then neither non-free one can be kept per WP:FREER, or they would have to be moved from the main infobox to the body of the article in support of sourced critical commentary about each logo in order to be kept as non-free.
Finally, there might be one more possibility in that even though both of the non-free files are two complex to be treated as WP:PD in the UK (if the UK is their country of origin) per c:COM:TOO United Kingdom, they might be acceptable to be re-licensed as {{PD-ineligible-USonly}} per c:COM:TOO United States. The main logo for Discovery, Inc. is File:Discovery Inc Logo.svg, which is licensed as {{PD-logo}}, and there are other similar logos found c:Category:SVG logos of Discovery Channel. Converting these files even to "PD-ineligible-USonly", however, might not be so clearcut given that File:Discovery Communications.svg is licensed as {{Non-free logo}}. Anyway, if the files (or at least File:Discovery Travel & Living logo.svg) is converted to PD, the shadowing issue with the Commons file will need to be resolved; moreover, the names of the two non-free files should probably be tweaked if kept per WP:FNC#7 since the names are quite similar. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:33, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alleged license has no evidence: source only says "For Promotional use on Wikipedia and other sources" which is not a sufficient license. Nominating for deletion (instead of speedy) in case someone wants to obtain permission or provide a fair use rationale instead. Closeapple (talk) 06:04, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I agree that the current licensing on the website is too restrictive for Wikipedia's purposes; I also think the {{GFDL}} license was probably added in good faith, but is not a correct license for this type of file. The only way this file can likely be kept is if the copyright holder sends a WP:CONSENT email to WP:Contact OTRS or the license on the webiste is changed to something that Wikipedia/Commons can accept as explained in c:COM:OTRS (those this latter approach assumes there's no concerns about license laundering). Moreover, I don't see any way this can be converted to a non-free license per WP:NFCC#1 given the fact that the subject of the photograph is still living and there's no reasonable reason to expect that a free equivalent image can neither be created nor found to serve the encyclopedic purpose of primary identification per WP:FREER. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:40, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Considering that User:廣九直通車 has now tagged the image as not having sufficient permission in the OTRS communication, will the file be deleted in due course after the 30 days are up, or do we need to delete it with this discussion? If this discussion is no longer needed, I'd suggest closing the discussion as a procedural keep and letting the OTRS process approve or expire the file. --Closeapple (talk) 05:17, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It might just possibly be useful in Mongolian calligraphy. Thincat (talk) 13:17, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I don't recall what I uploaded it for, but it's a different style than anything in that article. — kwami (talk) 18:29, 9 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
