Uploader states that if a better picture is found to replace and one has been found and uploaded. the file name states it is a Persian Santur, but the description states that it is a Turkish Santur, which in might be tuned to Turkish keys, but that is a picture of an upside down Persian Santur Santurman (talk) 03:06, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image is absolutely, 100% replaceable, thus failing WP:NFCC#1. That said, my attention was drawn to this image by a dispute tag. Thus I'm putting this through FFD to ensure that everyone's behind is covered. If not for the dispute tag, I'd otherwise forgo the wait period and just speedy this obvious violation. Keep As per the FUR, the image is used "To illustrate the fact that while Somaliland is not diplomatically recognised by any other state, third party sources treat it as an independent state. The significance of this image is that a major publisher included the disputed state of Somaliland as an independent state. Thus, recreating a free equivalant of this map would not be able to replace it." WP:NFC#UUI specifically gives this is an appropriate exception: "4. A map, scanned or traced from an atlas, to illustrate the region depicted. Use may be appropriate if the map itself is a proper subject for commentary in the article: for example, a controversial map of a disputed territory, if the controversy is discussed in the article." The controversy is discussed in Somaliland: "While Somaliland's independence is not diplomatically recognized by other states, it is depicted as a sovereign state by cartographers in some published atlases." Weak delete. The question comes down to how useful it is to the reader to understand the statement in the text about "cartographers in some published atlases" to actually see the image of this part of this map. It seems to me that one could, instead, have an inline cite to the appropriate page of this atlas, to accomplish the same thing. (I appreciate the argument that it would be bogus to substitute an editor-created version of the map for this purpose, although such an image could certainly be used, instead, to show the reader where the areas in question are located.) I just don't think it's that important for the reader to see the image in order to understand that some maps exist that include it as a state. --Tryptofish (talk) 18:46, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Keep TDL has drawn our attention to WP:NFC#UUI point 4 which seems to describe the present situation closely. That is only a guideline and so its relevance here can be debated but I agree with Epeefleche that a guideline cannot be ignored by default. In the circumstances, given a seeming valid use of the image, whether the image is better or worse than a citation to the MapArt map is a matter for discussion at the articles. Admittedly, this is not black-and-white, but UUI is part of a list of uses that are generally not permitted. The question comes down to whether this use meets the exception given for controversial maps that are subjects of commentary. I think a case can be made that readers don't need to see this particular map in order to understand the controversy. An editor-created map can show the regions in question just as well, and once a reader knows where that is on a map, it is probably self-evident what a map like this one would look like. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:19, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

See Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Kumarrajendran. Part of the problem here is that the user has physical possession of photographs (relating to M. G. Ramachandran as he is the grandson of MGR's wife), but many of them are just copies of government images and some movie stills.
