Some Wikipedians have formed a project to provide information related to chemistry. The main efforts focus on providing articles clearly written articles that give an overview of the topic, all supported by reliable sources. The Chemistry portal is maintained at Portal:Chemistry and the project banner is {{WikiProject Chemistry}}. We also have a structure drawing workgroup and a Gold Book workgroup. Chemistry articles considered of vital importance to Wikipedia are listed on the expanded vital articles list.
Overview
Things you can do

Here are some things you can do:
- Add references: Hydrolysis - Perfluorocycloalkene (needs general refs) - Hair conditioner - Water softening - Tarnish - crystal structure of ferrous acetate tetrahydrate
- Copyedit: Lacquer - Algaecide - Hydroxyl radical - Naturally occurring phenols
- Update: Nematicide - Biopesticide - Glucoside
- Style: Explosive - Shampoo - Corrosion - Biodiesel - Preservative - Recrystallization (chemistry)
- Articles needing an expert: Lead(II) hydroxide & plumbite - Ene reaction (most content focuses on big total syntheses, WP:UNDUE) - Evelyn effect (written as a textbook but not very clear)- Molecular geometry (remove content that is not about geometry) - Diastereomer (acknowledge that this is a big topic, not just sugars) - Naturally occurring phenols- Ethyl nitrate - Ionization energy - Zwitterion - Photoredox catalysis - faujasite - Manganese-mediated coupling reactions - Enolate (redundant, white space, general vs specialized info) - Alcohol oxidation (probably most alcohols are not oxidized in the ways presented in this undergrad lab-oriented article) - Aldol reaction (build up the real-world apps of use of "fancy reagents" and find some real apps for them, if any)
- Expand: Headspace gas chromatography (with examples) - Coffee and Tea (chemistry of roasting and flavors) - Organouranium chemistry - Organolanthanide chemistry - Oxygen Scavengers - Ionization energy
- Merge or split: Molecular scale electronics & Molecular electronics -Nanocluster, Nanoparticle deposition, & Characterization of nanoparticles merge to Nanoparticle - Ring flip & Cyclohexane conformation are very similar - Spin transition into Selection rule - Liquefied petroleum gas & parts of propane - Supramolecular chemistry & Supramolecular catalysis & Non-covalent interaction & Molecular self-assembly & Macromolecular assembly - Petrochemical industry & Petrochemical - Trifluoromethyl cation & trifluoromethylation - Oxo-degradation (maybe redirect?) - Dihedral angle & Torsion angle - Lewis acidic antimony compounds distribute contents - transition metal phosphinidene complex to be created by cleaving that material from phosphinidine
- Collaborate: Sodium hydroxide - Ruthenium compounds - Rhenium compounds
- Article requests: 3-Cyclohexenone (isomer of the common 2-Cyclohexenone - Rutile structure (analogous to fluorite structure - norcaradiene - methyl and ethyl esters of stearic and oleic acids (and other fatty acids) - 3,6-Dichloro-2-hydroxybenzoic acid - Selenium-77 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy - Fluoride ion affinity - functional group compatibility - Diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) - *Potassium borohydride (currently a redirect to borohydride) - Tetrabutylammonium borohydride - Benzal bromide - 3-Chlorobenzaldehyde - 3-Methylbenzaldehyde - Methallyl bromide - Piperitol (terpenoid flavorant) - 1,2-Diamines (see leading refs in diamine
- Accuracy disputes: Diazonium compound: "Phenyldiazonium chloride is dangerously explosive, but benzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate is easily handled on the bench." - Conformational isomerism is a fringe-phenomenon and this article should be rotamer
- Peer review: Monatomic ion

Anyone can participate in the WikiProject. The collection of articles in this project aspires to be authoritative and comprehensive, but gaps exist with respect to clarity, scope, and supporting references.
Technical experts are always needed, but nonexperts can contribute by improving readability.
Guidelines for editing are listed in WP:NOT. Some highlights that are particularly relevant to this project:
- WP:SECONDARY and WP:TERTIARY. The most desirable references are to reviews and books (including ebooks). Many such sources are behind paywalls, unfortunately.
- WP:RS. Claims require reliable sources. The definition of RS can be ambiguous in the case of patents and dissertations. Some concern exists about citing predatory journals.
- WP:MEDRS. Claims related to human health require especially strong supporting references, read: secondary and tertiary.
- WP:NOTTEXTBOOK. As an encyclopedia, Wikipedia presents facts. It is not a textbook replete with explanations. The difference between an encyclopedia and a textbook can be subtle however.
- WP:COI. Editors avoid topics where they have a conflict of interest, or at least they disclose their conflict. "Ref spamming" by authors of journal articles is a persistent problem.
- WP:UNDUE. The space allocated to subtopics within an article should reflect their relative significance. Of course, defining "relative significance" can be non-obvious.
