Colonel George Davenport (1783-July 4, 1845) was a 19th century American frontiersman, trader and US Army officer. A prominent and well-known settler in the Iowa Territory, he was one of the earliest settlers in Rock Island and spent much of his life involved in the early settlement of the Mississippi Valley. The present-day city of Davenport, Iowa is named after him. Biography[edit]Born in England, Davenport went to sea at an early age. He arrived in New York in 1804 and enlisted in the US Army for ten years later participating in the War of 1812 under General James Wilkinson. At the end of the Peoria War, he escorted the Pottawatomie peace delegation to St. Louis in late-December 1813 where the peace treaty was signed. Those chieftains in the delegation included Black Partridge, Senachwine, Comas, Shick Shack, Crow and Gomo. [1] [2] In the spring of 1816, he accompanied Colonel Lawrence as an army supplier for an expedition to Rock Island where Fort Armstrong was established. After he was discharged, he became a successful merchant and traded with the local tribes in the Illinois and Iowa territories for several years. Soon after his arrival, he built a double log cabin. This was the first permanent residence built in the Rock Island-area from which grew into a small frontier town. The first recorded religious service was held at his home in 1819. Around this time, Davenport entered a partnership with fellow pioneer and fur trader Russell Farnham. Building a house on the mainland opposite of Rock Island, the two founded Farnhamsburg, a small village from which the present-day Rock Island, Illinois stands. In 1825, Davenport was appointed the first postmaster of Rock Island when the post office was established. [3] The following year, he resigned his position to became an agent for John Jacob Astor's American Fur Company with Farnham and oversaw its interests from Iowa to the Turkey River. During the Black Hawk War, he was made an assistant quartermaster with a commission of colonel by Governor John Reynolds. In 1833, he moved from his double log cabin and built his home on a lower part of Rock Island near the old fort and, two years later, he and six others purchased a large tract of land along the Mississippi River opposite the island. On this site, the town of Davenport, Iowa was officially founded on February 23, 1836. In 1842, he negotiated a treaty on behalf of Governor John Chambers between the Iowa territorial government and the Sauk and Fox for the sale of their lands in Iowa. On July 4, 1845, Davenport's family went to the mainland to celebrate Independence Day. Davenport stayed behind however and, sometime during the late afternoon, a band of river pirates forced their way into Davenport's home. Intending to burglarize his home, they robbed and murdered Davenport before fleeing. Three of these men, Granville Young and brothers John and Aaron Young, were later arrested and executed for the crime [4] being hung by daguerreotypists Thomas Martin Easterly and Frederick E. Webb later that year. [5] His home, one of the earliest buildings to be built in Rock River, still exists on Rock Island and remains one of the oldest residential landmarks in northern Illinois. It is operated by the Colonel Davenport Historical Foundation as a museum. [6] References[edit]

General Joseph Monfort Street (October 18, 1782-May 5, 1840) was a 19th century American pioneer, trader and US Army officer. During the 1820s and 1830s, he was also a U.S. Indian Agent to the Winnebago and later to the Sauk and Fox tribes after the Black Hawk War. His eldest son was Joseph H.D. Street, the first appointed registar of the Council Bluffs Land Office in western Iowa. Biography[edit]Born to Anthony and Molly Street in Virginia, he settled in Shawneetown during the early 1800s. His father-in-law, Governor Thomas Posey, died of typhus fever at his home on March 9, 1818. [7] Following the death of Nicholas Boilvin in 1827, Street became the U.S. Indian Agent to the Winnebago. He and his family were one of the earliest to settle in Prairie du Chien and the first Presbyterian families to live in the area. [8] While residing at Prairie du Chien, he was present at the signing of the peace treaty ending the Winnebago War. During his administration, his attempts to help the Winnebago ultimatly failed largely due to the interests of the American Fur Company. [9] In 1829, a Major Stephen F. Kearney of Fort Crawford arrested French-Canadian logger Jean Brunett who Street had reported was illegally leading a logging party on an island on the Mississippi River and lay within the Winnebago territory. He and Kearney kept Brunett in custody for a considerable length of time before releasing him, however the two were sued for illegal arrest and ordered to pay fines and court expenses in excess of $1,374 dollars. The presiding judge of the territorial court had ruled that only the President of the United States had the authority to expell a foreigner, even in the process of committing an illegal act, and that the officers arrest was unlawful unless recieving a presidential order. However both men were later reumbursed by the US Congress. [10] In 1831, he wrote to U.S. Secretary of War Lewis Cass that when the Sauk, Fox and other tribes which had agreed to cede their lands in western Iowa the previous year a local trader had reported that "The Sacs and Foxes wish to sell to the United States the whole of their country that borders on the Mississippi, but they won't sell unless the commissioners will pay to Messrs. Farnham and Davenport what the Indians owe them." He and his brother-in-law Alexander Posey both participated in the Black Hawk War and, in the weeks following the Battle of Bad Axe, members of the Sioux delivered 68 scalps and 22 prisoners to him. [11] The Winnebago Prophet and Black Hawk were delivered to him by two Winnebago warriors, One-Eyed Decorri and Cha-e-tar at the agancy headquarters on August 27, 1832. One-Eyed Decorri claimed credit for Black Hawk's capture who told Street,
In a letter sent on September 3, Street reported "The day after Gen's Scott and Atkinson left this place, I sent out two parties of Winnebagos to bring Black Hawk, the Prophet and Neopope to me." [12] While Black Hawk was being transported to Galena, Illinois by steamship, he took special cake that the prisoners were well-treated. When it was reported to him that iron handcuffs had been rivited on Black Hawk, he ordered officer Jefferson Davis to have them removed. [13] During 1832 and 1833, he was extensively involved in post-war settlements with the Sac and Fox and was eventually named as a U.S government liason and representitive of the Sauk and Fox in 1836. The following year, he accompanied a Sauk and Fox delegation to Washington, D.C. where they agreed to relinquish 1,250,000 of their lands In Iowa to the United States officially signing the "Second Purchace" treaty on October 21, 1837. [14] He later accompanied the Fox chieftain Poweshiek to select a location for the Sac and Fox agency on the Des Moines River. The agency was located on the Lower Des Moines, at the site of present-day Agency City, Iowa. Using money from the U.S. Indian Fund, he oversaw the construction of several buildings including a small farm for his family when they arrived from Prairie du Chien in April 1838. Recognizing the scarcity of game in the region, he encouraged the federal government to introduce farming to the agency as well as the establishment of Presbyterian missions to provide education to the local tribes. Street had been in negotiations with the U.S. government on behalf of the Fox and Sauk for another purchase of Sac and Fox lands in Iowa, however he had been in failing health for some time and died at the agency on May 5, 1840. His son-in-law, Major John Beach, took over his position as agent to the Sac and Fox and hosted a week long council resulted in the signing of the treaty on October 11, 1842. One of the clauses requested by the chieftains was a special stipend to be paid to Street's widow. He enjoyed a reputation among both his contemporaries as well as Native Americans and was described as The war chieftain Wapello, a close and personal friend, requested to be buried alongside him in what is now Chief Wapello's Memorial Park. Dunia Susi, born 1987, is a Football player in the Cristian Ronaldo mould. She is a winger/forward who is known for having great pace and quick feet. With the ability to either get to the line behind the defence or cut inside and shoot from long range she can provide a plethora of options for any team mate playing alongside her. Susi is regarded as a great prospect for England Women's Senior team at the age of 20 has represented her country at various youth levels; including U19,U21 and U23 all and still only 20 years old. In 2007, Susi was also a member of the Great Britain team that competed in the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. In 2006, Susi was part of a team of three, known as The Dynamites, along with Mikaela Howell and Kylie Davies, who competed and won the highly competitive under-20 women's section of the grand finals of the national Joga-3 tournament. After reaching the final at Arsenal's former stadium at Highbury, as shown on Sky Sports, the Dynamites then went on to represent Great Britain team at the Joga-3 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro later that year. Mo Marley, England Ladies U19 Coach previously said of her: "Dunia Susi has great pace and when she runs at established international defenders every weekend for us, she scares them, and I'm sure she can do the same on the international stage." Susi started her career at Enfield Town Ladies and after a few seasons was known throughout the borough as she scored over 150 in just two seasons (each comprising of 14 matches a season). She later moved to the Arsenal Academy team and developed her abilities gaining recognition on the International youth level. In 2005, she signed for Fulham Ladies and gained her first taste of the FA Premier Woman's League. After becoming a valuable member of the team she was signed by Chelsea Ladies Team in 2006. She currently still plays for Chelsea Ladies. Sources[edit]http://archive.dailyecho.co.uk/2006/6/19/103408.html

History[edit]Steve 'Stripclub' Leathem, born in a small but lively town, Crowborough, in East Sussex. He lives with his mum, his dad, and Grandad bear. His childhood was marvellous, he had a full head of hair, a young and spritely hunk of a man, he attained good grades at school, was the king of Subbuteo, and Hungry Hippos (the things that all cool kids were good at)... Then came the time in which he had to grow up.... Between then, and now...[edit]He has done numerous 'half' jobs... Including helping the nation by proving 'you cant get better than a kwik-fit fitter', an attendant at a local 'male only brothel' and then got into the Airline industry.. At first, the male cabin attendants were the ones catching his eyes, his lust for them was undeniable.. The joys of going into work in the morning overshadowed all other personalities in the office.. He was a joy to behold. All the Airlines wanted him... The Now[edit]What can be said about Steve Leathem nowadays.. He is clearly ahead of his times... Although his hair has quickly receded, his humour, wit, and sheer brain capacity hasnt... He can still be found in that one 'little male brothel' that he secretly worked on those long weekends, and has certainly carried on in the airline business, but instead has ended up in the cargo business... I believe the thrill of sweaty LoadMasters is the new in thing! The rumours of chubby chasing, has been thwarted somewhat, but the suggestions are very much still there, but Steve is very much happy with his choices.. All the way back to thoe male brothels, those oiled up male quik-fit fitters throwing tyres about behind the doors. Nowadays, Steve can be found hanging about at MK. Airlines HQ and chatting to his very close friends on the below sources...

History of NCLB[edit]The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 or NCLB as it is often abbreviated, is a controversial United States Federal Law that reauthorized a number of federal programs aiming to improve the performance of the United States Education system by closing the achievement gap with the accountability to be held for states, school districts, and schools, giving flexibility options and a choice to parents on which schools their children will attend. The act was intended to promote an increased focus on reading and math. In January of 2002, the act was signed into law (12.) Cost Incurred[edit]The quality of the public school systems directly affects all parents, students, and citizens. Over the years since the acts existence congress has created hundreds of programs intended to address problems in education. Since the creation of these programs were created, it has not been addressed as to whether or not the programs are producing results, nor is it known what the impact is on local needs (8). This “program for every problem” solution is costing. The cost incurred is so much that there are hundreds of education programs, spread across 39 federal agencies with a cost of $120billion a year (8). After spending billions of dollars on education the system as a whole has still fallen short in meeting goals for educational excellence (8). The case that NCLB has failed to raise test scores had been made at length in a report from the Civil Rights Project at Harvard University (5). Never before has so much money been spent to test children in any subject and never have so many rules and regulations been imposed on schools and children. Holding schools accountable for doing their job should not be considered an unfunded mandate. No Child Left Behind focuses on the most fundamental task of schools, ensuring that children receive the basic skills that are needed to succeed in the 21st century (2). By trying to make things equal for all children, some are being left out. Not all children learn at the same level or the same pace. Some learn quicker than others and need more to challenge their minds, but since the acts existence teachers are forced to teach all children on the same level at the same pace. According to the opinion of the National Association of Teachers, NCLB is not a piece of educational reform legislation; it is a trap (7). Education should be a number one focus in the United States. If changes are not made to the current plan, the U.S. will be left behind. Currently, India and China are two countries climbing to the top in engineering and technology, while the U.S. is falling behind. A summarized statement of Thomas Friedman author of “The World is Flat”, stated that in growing up he was told to finish his dinner people in China are starving, today he tells his daughters, finish your homework, people in India are starving for your jobs.” Public spending on K-12 education was $422.7billion in 2001-2002. So who covers the cost for the NCLB? Every state, but each is provided with federal money to cover the costs. If states take the money and require local districts to meet state standards, then these same local districts can legally demand that the state provide adequate money to meet these standards. In 2003 the National Governor’s Association estimated that states were facing a deficit of $58billion dollars, making it hard for states to fund $84.5billion extra. Most states at the time were balancing budgets by cutting the cost of education. Jobs Created[edit]The potential for job opportunities opened up as well since the NCLB. Across the country tutoring centers such as Sylvan Learning Center and Huntington Learning Centers have became more and more popular to aid in the development of students educational needs (10, 11). Research has shown that tutoring programs can reduce the achievement gap by ten to fifteen percent. The problem is parents don’t know that they are available or are not utilizing resources to better improve the students’ needs to succeed. To date the federal government has spent more than $130billion on improving public schools (8). The unfortunate problem is the investment in education has not reduced the achievement gap between high income students to lower income students, nor has it reduced the gap between minority and non-minority students. According to Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, over their lifetime, dropouts from the class of 2007 will cost our nation more than $300billion in lost wages. By increasing graduation rates by just five percent, for men alone, would save nearly eight billion dollars each year in crime related costs (9). If the high school graduation rates were raised to current levels across the board for all students, the potential increase in personal income across the country would, by conservative estimates, add more than $310billion to the U.S. economy. Unless trends are reversed, high schools will become increasingly complicit in creating a permanent underclass of individuals who cannot provide for themselves or their families (3). Unfortunately, tax cuts, a sluggish economy, and the cost of war in Iraq all suggest the significant fiscal help will not be forthcoming from the federal government.
