A logitudinal study is one in which the participants of the study, or the subjects, are tracked for a long period of time, usually years. Instances in which a logitudinal design can be most helpful include studying the effects of child abuse, as was the case in one article we read in class at the beginning of the fall term. Logitudinal studies have the obvious benefit in being most helpful in gaging behaviors and mindsets as they develop over time, but that same benefit can pose a double edged sword. Logitudinal studies take a long time to conduct, and scientists may not have the luxury of time or money for such an endeavor at their disposal. Thomas "Guide" Gaither Was broadcasting his late night rock show almost every night following love-line and could also be heard on the weekends during the afternoon from 1992 - 1996. Thomas was influenced by the afterhours house scene in Los Angeles and would sometimes bring it's style in to the studio and on to the air. Thomas left The World Famous Kroq in May of 1996 and would go on to produce small independent films before leaving the industry in 1997. Alizeh Imtiaz

Born on 10th November 1986, in Karachi, Pakistan, Alizeh Imtiaz is the first Pakistani to have successfully had her debut short film 'Shades of Black' screened at the London Filmmakers Convention 2007. Her short film also won the award for Best Film at the London Filmmakers Convention which screened 80 films from all around the world. Her short film will once again be screened at the London Portobello Film Festival in August 2008. She is one of the youngest directors in Pakistan, and one of the very few to have gained international acclaim. She is currently studying English and Film and Television in Brunel University, London. Her short film was an experimental piece which focused on the journey of a prisoner released from Karachi Central Jail. Her style is very dependant on detail to music and photography. Her debut short film 'Shades of Black' gained much attention after Alizeh appeared on one of Pakistans most famous comedy talk show called 'Mani and Azfar show'. The short film was produced by Media Tech Films Pvt Ltd, for AAG TV Channel. Her previous experience in direction include a high profile celebrity based TV show called 'FLASH' for HUM TV channel in Pakistan which she directed before returning to complete her degree. Before her venture into Direction, Alizeh Imtiaz had also been active in several theatre productions in Karachi - from acting to direction. Alizeh has attended several workshops to aid her acting talent, from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London. In addition, Alizeh has been trained in acting by Rahat Kazmi, a famous Pakistani actor, director, teacher and theatric. Skunkwheat

Skunkwheat is an experimental wheat containing chemicals that are designed to reduced the odor of a Skunk's spray, when consumed orally. The new crossbreed of wheat was developed at the University of Washington, by Professor Alan Ettenberg, and is still in the developmental stages. The Idea In the early weeks of March, 2006, Ettenberg and his family were camping in Goldbar, Washington. Ettenbergs son was sprayed by a skunk, and anallergic reaction set in. His son was rushed to a local hospital to treat a minor cardiac arrest suffered from the reaction, and Ettenberg, upon returning to work at the university, began extensive research on the common skunk. While he failed to find a way of eliminating the spray, he did find a way, in theory, to reduce the odor. The Breakthrough Ettenberg realized that the prime chemicals in a skunks spray, namely acetate thioesters could be greatly reduced when certain breeds of skunk consumed the skunkwheat mixture that he feed them. The basic breakdown of the skunks spray, from a chemical stand point is as follows: Ettenberg began three different breeds of skunk on the skunkwheat diet, monitoring each on to see if their was a difference in odor, or amount of spray with each discharge. Results, while announced positive by the University, have been "varied" according to the official studies published later that year. Mark Norell

Mark Norell is Head Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Widely renowned in scientific circles, he is one of the primary discoverers of "Dave," a feathered dromaeosaur, and "Big Mamma," an Oviraptor found sitting on her nest of eggs. Mark acquired a master's degree at San Diego and a Ph.D at Yale University. Mark's extensive research has led him to publish over 100 articles in prestigeous academic journals, including Nature and Science. He lives in New York City. GEM is a gyrokinetic turbulence simulation that uses $\delta f$ particle-in-cell method. It is used to study waves, instabilities and nonlinear behavior of tokamak fusion plasmas. Information about GEM can be found at the GEM web page. There are two versions of GEM, one is a flux-tube version and the other one is a global general geometry version. Both versions of GEM employ a field-line-following geometry. Ions are treated kinetically, but averaged over their gyro-obits and electrons are treated as drift-kinetic. The modeling of the plasmas The magnetically confined plasma is treated statistically. The distribution function depends on both the three-dimensional position and the two-dimensional velocity. The time evolution of the distribution function is described by a gyro-kinetic equation which is Vlasov Equation averaging over the fast gyro-motion associated with the magnetic field. Algorithm to solve the equations A split-weight scheme is applied on electrons to overcome the limit of small time step, which is caused by the fast motion of electrons. Applications The code has been used to simulate the nonlinear physics involved in the microturbulence like ion temperature gradient driven mode, electron temperature gradient driven mode and trapped electron mode.
