Dalhousie University Faculty of Computer Science

The Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University resulted from the amalgamation of the former School of Computer Science at the Technical University of Nova Scotia and the computer science divison of the Department of Math, Stats and Computer Science at Dalhousie University on April 1, 1997.

The Faculty took residence on the 15th and 16th floors of the Maritime Centre until the new Computer Science building was completed in the fall of 1999. The building was designed by Brian MacKay-Lyons and was featured in Canadian Architect in March 2000.

As of September 2006, the Faculty is made up of 35 faculty members, 17 staff members and a student body of approximately 400.

Summer Pops Youth Orchestra

Down, was minister of the church from 1954-6 and again 1962-4.

bookmark zine

The original bookmark zine, or "book within a book," was designed, written, and published by Anne Adams in Portland, Oregon in 2001. Unique for its piquant uber-short stories as well as its bookmark-sized layout, the tome was immediately picked up as a retail item for Powell's Bookstore by Kevin Sampsell, of Future Tense Books, who at that time was also publishing the original zines of novelist Zoe Trope.

A variation of the bookmark zine with a similar layout and theme, the Seattle Research Institute's "bookmark project" was published in 2004.

Jameah Islameah

Perian is a term of the Sindarin language, meaning halfling ("little one"), referring to the Hobbits of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy world Middle-Earth. Sindarin was the most common Elvish language of Midle-Earth in the Third Age.

Dieudonné de Gozon (1346-1353), Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. He carried the nickname of "Extintor Draconis" which means "The Dragon Slayer".

The story goes that there was a dragon in the island of Rhodes, Greece, hiding in the local swamp, and killing the cattle of the local farmers.

Despite the orders of the previous Grand Master to not disturb the beast, Gozor slayed the dragon, and hanged the head on one of the seven gates of the medieval town of Rhodes.

The head was on display until a hundred years ago, when a biologist pointed out it was the head of a large crocodile. [edit]

The Battle of Blue Waters was fought September 2, 1855 between members of the U.S. Army and Sioux warriors along the Platte River in modern Nebraska. The Battle was the defining engagement of a short war between the U.S. and the Sioux over disputes concerning violations of an 1851 Treaty concerning the Oregon Trail. It resulted in the complete defeat of the Sioux and a peace treaty a few months later.

The war started when an emigrant farmer lost a cow off the Oregon Trail which wandered into a Sioux camp a few miles off the trail. The Sioux killed and ate the cow, but the farmer reported it as stolen to Army officers at Fort Laramie. Unfortunately, the fort's commander sent an inexperienced officer who was very contemptuous of the Indians to negotiate reparations, Lt. John Grattan. Grattan vowed to teach the "savages" a lesson and took along 30 men and artillery. The result was that he insulted the Sioux and ended up firing artillery into their ranks. Before he could reload, the Sioux charged and massacred Grattan and most his men.

The United States could not allow this to stand and President Pierce vowed revenged. The war was hotly debated and Grattan was given much of the blame for the fracas in which he was killed. Pierce gave command to General William Harney with instructions to "whip the Indians."

The expedition finally set out in August of 1855. On September 1, 1855, the expedition caught up with a Sioux encampment along the Platte River in a place known as Blue Waters. Harney sent a regiment in a long night flanking maneuver in an attempt to set up a blocking position against which he would drive the Sioux. The flanking maneuver was led by Lt. Col. Phillip Cooke, and Captain Henry Heth, later a Division Commander under Robert E. Lee. Harney moved up in the morning to drive the Sioux against Cooke and Heth. He first attempted parlaying with the Sioux commander, Little Thunder, but his demands to hand over the men responsible for the Grattan attack were rebuffed. The Sioux felt justified in killing Grattan as it was a fair fight. During this parlay, several Sioux braves discovered Cooke's men. Harney then opened the fight by attacking head on into the Sioux camp. Some of the Sioux took refuge in caves along the river and Harney had his men fire blindly into the caves, with the result that many women and children were killed. A larger group of mounted warriors made for an escape route away from Cooke and Harney. But Heth had seen this maneuver and made his way to block this escape route. The warriors managed to break through Heth's men, but were then pursued on horseback by Cavalry with Heth in the lead. There was a running fight for about five miles lasting a few hours. At some point, Heth got so far ahead of his men, that he was presumed killed in action. His death was reported in newspapers around the country as a result, and he later took satisfaction in the nice obituaries his friends had written.

Among other participants of the battle was later Union General Gouverneur K. Warren who noted in his diary horror of killing women and children.

By October Harney negotiated a peace treaty to stop further bloodshed with the Sioux. While the battle was hailed by many newspapers as a heroic victory over bloodthirsty Indians, others criticized what they called outright butchery. Others claimed that the battle was fought only to justify the growth in the U.S. Army spearheaded by Secretary of War Jefferson Davis.

Dr. Mustafa El-Ebiary (born August 15, 1959) is an Egyptian physician known for his work on pneumonia. Born in Gizeh and raised in Alexandria, he received his first degree from the University of Alexandria before moving from Egypt to the Spain to complete his PhD at the University of Barcelona. After some post doctorate work at the University of Barcelona, Spain and Winthrop-University Hospital, Mineola, NY; he was awarded a faculty appointment at Barcelona in 1993, where he has remained since. El-Ebiary’s work has been as the pioneer of ventilator-associated pneumonia—i.e. the study of lung infections in patients needing mechanical ventilation. Vocal Contact Ulcers

Contact Ulcers are thought to be the result of sustained periods of increased pressure on the vocal folds. It is most commonly seen in people who use their voice excessively in their proffession (lawyers, teachers) Excessive force when speaking is considered the primary cause of contact ulcers. Reflux Laryngitis (AKA, Laryngopharengal reflux, Acid Reflux) can also be a contributing if not inciting factor in the development of contact ulcers. Symptoms include: hoarseness (chronic or acute), vocal fatigue, or throat pain (particularly during speech.)

Treatment: If forceful speaking is the primary cause, vocal therapy is suggested to reduce the cause. In most voice disorders that do not require surgery, the best way to treat it is to remove the source of the problem, in this case: forceful speaking. Working with a voice coach to learn how to properly use one's voice is at the forefront of contact ulcer treatment. Initially, vocal rest or conservation may be reccomended to give the voice a heads up on the healing process, allowing one to more fully participate in voice therapy.

In the instance of contact ulcers caused by Laryngopharengal Reflux, changes might need to be made in regards to eating habits to prevent the production and exacerbation of excessive stomach acid. It is generally recommended that one avoids: chocolate, caffeine, citrus, carbonated beverages, tomato, fried/fatty foods, alcohol, and spicy foods. Avoid eating two-three hours prior to lying down for an extended period of time (10+ minutes) or going to bed. Sometimes, blocks are placed under the head of the bed to raise it 2-5", which lets gravity keep the stomach acid down. Placing a pillow under ones head produces NEGLIGABLE benefits and is not recommended. Antacids are reccomended before bed and before and after meals. In some instances, medications called H2 blockers (Pepcid) or Proton Pump Inhibitors (Prevacid) may be perscribed to prevent the production of stomach acids. Note that H2 blockers prevent the production of approx. 40% of stomach acid, while PP Inhibitors affect nearly 90%.

Turbulence on a Plane

Hello I'm writing this article about air turbulence.

Some people worry a lot about turbulence but to be honest, it's nothing to worry about. Basically it's just ripples in the air. It's like driving over bumps in a car. If you are going through a cloud it may be a bit bumpy, a rain cloud would be bumpier and a thunderstorm would feel quite scary at some points but almost all planes will be able to survive a lightning strike. Normally the bigger the plane the less bumpy. Turbulence is hardly ever dangerous. The only time when it could be would be say if you were in a light aircraft and you had to fly through a heavy thunderstorm, then it could be very scary but in most circumstances a light aircraft would not fly in these conditions...

The Astonishing Boxie Game

Boxie is a game that is similar to tug-of-war. However, there are a few differences. Boxie is played between two players, each standing on a box 4.5 inches tall and 18 by 18 inches wide. The players stand on the box positioned 8 feet apart from one another. Each player grabs ahold of the end of the rope that is 20 feet long. As soon as one of the players says go, each player grabs as much rope as possible. Then the players tug and release the rope until one player falls off of the box or loses their grip of the rope. The current boxie champion of the world is John.

The astonshing boxie game has a long and rich history. It all began back in the pioneer days. The game is still played by enthusiasts across the country.

The Variations of The Astonishing Boxie Game: Lasso - When a player loses and is a poor sport about it they then take the rope and attempt to lasso their opponent. Tie 'em to a pole - When a player loses the Astonishing Boxie Championship they then might take the rope and tie their opponent to a pole. This is only done by real losers.
