I am not a linguist but my late grandmother was a sangol-wearing (non-beetlenut chewing) sarong-kebaya clad Nonya.
My sister wrote "Emily of Emerald Hill"
I could not find on the web any "Peranakan Phrasebook"
so I propose to start one here and hope my fellow Peranakans will chip in.
Here are a few to start off:
Alamak! - ejaculation of alarm
Ahduay - expression of affection
Alah sayang - "Oh my beloved"
Gua - me (Hokkien origin)
Lu - you (Hokkien origin)
Ohpochok - expression of shock
Lateh - this is a peculiar Nonya reaction where the pershon will repeat what you say if you suddenly surprise them with a word/phrase. Much amusement by challenging Bibi Nonya Grandmother "Mak" with a vulgarity: she would Lateh and repeat that vulgarity several times.

libertarian attorney, writer, activist born Honolulu, Hawaii 1956.
Son of noted psychotherapist/author Dr. Martin Grossack and Judith Grossack, Educated at Thayer Academy, Braintree, Massachusetts; Brandeis University , Babson College (B.S., Management 1976) , and New England School of Law ( Juris Doctor 1981).
As a young law student , David Grossack was influenced by the activities of the late Andrew Melechinsky who was active in an organization known as Constitutional Revival. Constitutional Revival stood for the proposition that the federal constitution is the blueprint for a laissez faire , private enterprise society in which the role of government was limited and that courts are in error for not taking measures to limit the excesses of Administrative agencies, zoning boards, and similar bodies... The organization had several confrontations over property rights and building inspections Grossack acted a stand-by counsel for Melechinsky on several occasions. Grossack, at the age of 25, represented a member of Constitutional Revival in an action to quash an Internal Revenue Service third party summons by using discovery pleadings.
The action was so successful that Congress altered the means by which taxpayers could object to the IRS subpoenaing third party records.
Grossack soon had another opportunity to stand up for constitutional rights. When Israeli Knesset member and Jewish Defense League founder Rabbi Meir Kahane came to speak at the local high school in Brookline , Massachusetts , the town requested that his local supporters post a " security bond " to cover expenses resulting from the anticipated confrontation with opponents.
Grossack made news threatening the Town of Brookline with a lawsuit for violating Kahane's First Amendment rights. Brookline backed down, and Kahane spoke at the High School.
Mr. Grossack was active in advocating the free emigration of Jews from the former Soviet Union , Ethiopia and Arab countries.
In 1985 Grossack was named Professor of Civil Procedure at the Commonwealth School of Law, which was since absorbed by the Massachusetts School of Law in Andover.
In 1993 Grossack founded a publishing and seminar venture now known as the Citizens Justice Institute. The Institute held seminars to train laypersons wishing to represent themselves in civil litigation without an attorney. Mr. Grossack also published a monthly newsletter (Constitutional Business, later Citizens Law Digest ) which regularly briefed readers on topics such as civil procedure, constitutional law, civil rights litigation and property rights. The newsletter and seminar program appealed to people facing difficult challenges with bureaucracies and hostile attorneys in all fifty states. Numerous advocacy groups took a strong interest in the publications and Mr. Grossack became a popular speaker on radio, community television and in public forums .Fox News did a story on pro se litigation in which his work was mentioned.
Mr. Grossack in 1998 authored a book entitled How To Win A Lawsuit Without Hiring A Lawyer which explained in great detail many of the aspects of legal self representation., especially in civil rights cases.
Shortly there after he wrote another book entitled Radical Planet in which he advocated a number of social and economic changes in the United States and internationally, including the introduction of a new currency he invented called Universal Trade Hours, based on the value of time and labor. The book also fully details the methods by which activists can advance their causes and puts forth the hypothesis that their advantages to one's emotional well being through activism.
In 1998 the Massachusetts legislature began an investigation of the situation of unrepresented parties in Massachusetts courts. Grossack arranged for local legislators to introduce a bill into the Massachusetts House of Representatives to establish reading rooms and web sites for the instruction of pro se litigants in the state's court houses. Shortly thereafter, the Suffolk County Probate and Family Court in Boston established the first of such reading rooms.
Grossack made international news the same year. His Citizens Justice Institute brought exorcist Baron Deacon to Washington, D.C. to ‘cleanse demons from Congress." The exorcist performed a ritual on the steps of Capitol Hill in front of tourists, reporters, TV cameras and other onlookers. The event made headlines in several countries and was picked up on television and wire services.
The following year, Mr. Grossack was hired by the Fatherhood Coalition to challenge the treatment of males in the Massachusetts court system, most particularly domestic relations matters. Grossack, on behalf of his clients, charged that the Courts violated men's rights by removing them from their homes without a hearing on flimsy allegations of spousal abuse. Grossack's civil rights suit also alleged that property, alimony and custody decisions were usually biased against men. The lawsuit gathered significant publicity ,though it was unsuccessful. Mr. Grossack was named one of the state's ten best lawyers by the Boston Herald and received a coveted "Lawyer of the Year " award from Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
Mr. Grossack still practices law in Newton Massachusetts. He resides In Hull with long time companion Joan Shuman.

Lucky Louie
[edit]Lucky Louie Lucky Louie is an upcoming HBO series starring comedian Louis CK. CK stars in the first HBO series taped before a live studio audience. The sitcom is set to air in 2006.
Louis CK's show will have the appearance of a traditional network sitcom, but with profanity. Lucky Louie is about Louis CK, who plays a a man who works part-time at a muffler shop while his wife works double shifts at a hospital and keeps the household running. He spends most of his time hanging out with his two foulmouthed friends. In November 2005, Boston Globe Magazine featured CK on the cover and had a detailed article hailing the show as "brilliant".
CK has written the first season episodes for Lucky Louie, which as of the end of 2005 are still being filmed. He also promised to abandon the practice of shooting sitcoms on film, as he said he prefers the granier videotape look of 1970s sitcoms. Neil Swidey of the Boston Globe Magazine complimented the show's capturing of "the more subtle realties of race relations today" with interactions between CK and his black neighbor. Swidey also praises the interactions between CK's character and his wife as being "thick with realistic tension."
Cast members include Louis CK, Pamela Adlon, Jim Norton, Michael Hagerty, Rick Shapiro, and Jerry Minor.

Hamar re-enacted the MM experiment with a twist: : he put one of the legs of the interferometer between two massive lead blocks such as to block the so called "aether entrainment" (the one that Tom van Flandern is so fond of) and thus making the interferometer ASYMMETRIC. If 'aether entrainment" existed, then the Hamar experiment would have shown a difference in fringe displacement between the cases:
A) without lead blocks (both arms EQUALLY affected by "aether entrainment")
and
B) with lead blocks on ONE arm (only ONE arm affected)
The result was that there was no difference and this put an end to 'aether entrainment" .
- This is already mentioned in Michelson-Morley experiment. Uncle G 21:50, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Here is the ultimate biased presentation of Dayton Miller's experiments replete with innuendo, misquotes, Shankland's character assasination, etc. .While the analysis is technically flawed , the experimental data reflects the measurements accurately:

Contrary to the insinuations of the website's author, the data can be obtained from the Case Western University archives (by his own grudging admission Shankland did not destroy the data). On the other hand, the modern re-enactments (see below) make the Dayton Miller experiment irrelevant . The data for the modern experiments is readily available on the internet:

Great White Hunter A phrase coined in the late nineteenth century as a reference to white men who explored the remote lands of those times, typically in pursuit of big-game hunting in Africa and Asia.
Their exploits were romanticized in adventure novels that became the so-called "Lost World/Lost Race" genre. Perhaps the first fictional Victorian adventure hero to appear was Allan Quatermain, a great white hunter who appeared in books by H. Rider Haggard. A string of authors produced many stories in this genre since, of which the Indiana Jones series is just one of the most recent. Some famous real-life great white hunters were Denys Finch-Hatton (chronicled in "Out of Africa") and Ernest Hemingway.
Because these men typically displayed great determination, bravery, cleverness and physical skills, and their demeanor often had the stamp of educated and privileged backgrounds, their presence commanded the respect if not reverence of the primitive natives who served them.
The phrase - though often used with levity or jest - came to symbolize colonial power and dominance of white Europeans over the peoples in "lost" (read: unexplored by white man) continents. While the phrase does not carry connotations of cruelty or abuse toward other races, it does conjure up the dominance and exploitation by white man characteristic of the colonial era.

It really sucks that unregistered users have to go through this hassle just to create a redirect. — 69.211.123.29 23:14, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
- You don't have to. Creating an account would solve these problems, make attributing edits to you and talking to you easier for the rest of us and it would obscure your IP address from the majority of Wikipedians (in fact all of them, unless you break any rules that would prompt a lookup). And it's free. What more do you want? - Mgm|(talk) 11:10, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

In 1787, Louis XVI and his finance minister tried to rally support for a tax on all landed property and the formation of provincial assemblies to enforce the measure. The assembly of notables (mostly high clergy and and members of the nobility) didn't like the idea. The agreed to support the new tax if the provincial assemblies were given control over all government spending. Louis XVI, of course, wouldn't make this concenssion. The assembly of notables' rejection of the idea led directly to the calling of the Estates General, which in turn uncorked a vast amount of revolutionary fervor.
