When?
[edit]I don’t know when I will die. But Wikipedia DOES seem to be dying
Our monthly pageviews of the Main page are only one-fourth that of 2015. Btw what happened in 2019/2020? --Dustfreeworld (talk) 22:48, 22 February 2024 (UTC); 04:42, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- Or, is that chart incorrect? (E.g., have there been any changes in the design/linking of the main page that causing the chart to look like this?) --Dustfreeworld (talk) 23:00, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
- It’s said that the number of active editors remains roughly the same in the past decade. But ... I don’t think the world population has remained the same in the past decade …
- Further, having a stable amount of active editors does not necessarily mean more content additions. It can mean more content *deletions*. --Dustfreeworld (talk) 04:44, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, I missed this note months ago. I think there have periodically been revisions to the pageviews system. For example, they do a better job over time of identifying bots and leaving them out of the page counts.
- The sudden drops in pageviews that happened in November 2019 and again in May 2020 are both on the desktop site. The mobile site (you can see "Platforms" separately) doesn't show this. So that might be a sign that they had technical changes in those months. WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:34, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
Interesting read
[edit]Hopefully this site can remain stable in the future tho is something I hope for too. Jasonbunny1 (talk) 01:32, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
- Me, too! WhatamIdoing (talk) 05:34, 6 October 2024 (UTC)
Je vais mourir
[edit]I translated your text, which will be published in the next WP:RAW, the Signpost's cousin at French Wikipedia. Good things must be shared. Trizek from fr: 10:03, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for letting me know.
- Would frwiki like its own copy of Template:Registered editors by edit count? It's not difficult to pull the numbers. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:11, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
- @WhatamIdoing, thanks for your notable essay, and @Trizek, thanks for your efforts in translating it into French. You might like to single your translation out on a separate page on French Wikipedia so we could create interwiki links between the two language versions, if you like. By the way, I consider translating your text into German, if you don't mind. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 21:30, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

- Template:Registered editors by edit count would be super useful. Working on the translation was the first (and easier) step. Where does the info that populates it comes from?
- I created the interwiki link.

- That's fine, Thank you both. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 12:19, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
- @Trizek, I calculated the numbers via Special:Statistics and Quarry. I recommend using w:fr:Wikipédia:Wikipédiens par nombre d'éditions for the highest end. It's not difficult. Here's the basic set (as of today) to get you started:
- Total number of registered accounts: 5,193,999 (from Special:Statistics)
- Accounts that made 1+ edit: 1,476,181 (quarry:query/94374)
- Accounts with 10+ edits: 275,212
- Accounts with 100+ edits: 43,386
- Accounts with 1,000+ edits: 9,379
- Accounts with 10,000+ edits: 2,440
- Accounts with 100,000+ edits: 294
- If you prefer presenting it as percentage, then:
- Top 10% of all registered accounts: 4 edits (10% of 5,193,999 accounts)
- Top 1% of all accounts: 80 edits
- Top 0.1% of all accounts: 2,400 edits
- Top 0.01% of all accounts: 60,000 edits
- or
- Top 10% of registered accounts with 1+ completed edits: 22 edits (10% of 1,476,181 accounts with 1+ edits)
- Top 1% of contributors: 475 edits
- Top 0.1% of all contributors: 20,000 edits
- Top 0.01% of all contributors: 120,000 edits
- That last set is accomplished by figuring out how many you want (e.g., 1% of 1,476,181 = 14,761) and guessing numbers in the Quarry query until you find something close (e.g., putting 475 edits in the query gives an answer of 14,714 editors, and 470 is 14,796 editors). The queries take about two seconds to run, so it can be done in 10 minutes.
- The enwiki template is based on percentages, so the numbers can automatically update while the base numbers grow. A purely manual table will be easier to set up, and it will probably only need to be updated every couple of years. The enwiki template also has multiple columns expressing the numbers in different forms. I have mixed feelings about that. Some people find different styles more informative, but the added complexity has costs, too. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:03, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
- w:it:Discussioni utente:Elitre#For you has the Italian numbers from 2021. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:04, 6 June 2025 (UTC)
