Why am I being deleted?

Thanks for sending the deleted article I requests, I'm sprucing it up according to Wiki standards.

One question though: I found the relevant templates for items I'd like to include, but I'm still not sure how to use *templates*...do I just "overwrite" the info on the template page via the edit link, or do I cut and paste the wiki code from inside the template page into a whole "new article"?

I am sorry you do not feel you have the time or energy to create supported article. However, the burden of providing verifiable support for an article "... lies with the editor who adds or restores material." By the way the support you provided is not independent, third-party, support. BTW - there is nothing about your article that "bugs" me, but it does not meet the criteria for a well supported article. The basic format for refs is <ref>details of the citation</ref>, the details of which can be found in WP:REF. Take a look at the Quick summary section.

If you were writing an article about the San Francisco Bay Bridge and were referring to the crack found on the bridge, the code would look like this.

Upon inspection workers found a 2 inch crack in the bridge.<ref>http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/09/05/BALL19J81O.DTL&tsp=1</ref>

The resulting text would look like this:

Upon inspection workers found a 2 inch crack in the bridge.^[1]

The ref would look like

I would suggest you confirm the article meets the criteria in the links in the welcome message I left on your talk page. A very quick overview of the article brings to surface a couple of issues. First the article lacks sufficient references to support verifiability and the subject of the article does not appear to be of sufficient notability to warrant its own article. Finally, it appears meet the criteria to be classified as unambiguous advertising or promotion. Avital Ash

Hi Tony,

I am very new to Wikipedia and since you appear to be an expert that knows his stuff, I'm wondering if you can provide suggestions as to how to improve the article. I tried posting some of this on the Talk:Avital Ash page but am having some trouble. Wikipedia is a new venture for me. Here is the gist of my argument as to why this article has a place in the Wikipedia community:

In response to the non-notable claim: The Hold Steady are a very popular band, and between random websites (see references on her page for one example) and all the YouTube comments on each copy of each video for "Chips Ahoy!" there are questions as to who the girl in the video is. Wikipedia can provide an answer.

Her show on MusicPlusTV had a large following - particularly with teenage girls and overseas. Not sure how to find information to back this up, but when Tyler Hilton performed on the show, the site crashed because there were so many viewers. This, of course, is due to Tyler Hilton's popularity, but the fact remains that it was on her show, and the people that liked it, kept watching.

If you have not yet seen that the references have been updated and only verifiable and relevant information has been left up, please take a fresh look.

Thanks for the message. Notability in the real world is a bit different than Wikipedia notability. Take a look at the section on notability and also the section on how to write a great article. The article must have sufficient independent, verifiable references to support any claims in the article. The fact the she was in a video for Hold Steady, is not evidence of notability. The band may be notable, but their notability does not rub off on her. Her show MusicPlusTV may have a large following, but popularity is not the same as notability in Wikipedia. Thanks for getting back to me.

Wikipedia's definition of Notability under 'Entertainers' includes "Has a large fan base or a significant "cult" following." Her following on MusicPlusTV fits in here. The criteria also includes, "Has made unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment." The fact that she is a writer/director/actor that did all three for one film is a pretty unique one. While even the list of men who do all three in film is relatively small, the list of women is even smaller. Only Miranda July and Julie Davis come to mind. Another female contributing on many levels in the film industry is a rarity - particularly at 21. In a sense she is part of a movement already.

I see no evidence in the article of a cult following. I disagree the following on MusicPlusTV fits the criteria. The writer/director/actor trio, while it maybe rare is neither a prolific or an innovative contribution. It has been done before and is not trail blazing. Living Person Biographies

Ttonyb1,

I recently created a bio page for Tian Dayton. When I did I was informed that the page didn't conform to some of Wikipedia's policies. I am not sure why; I'm somewhat new to Wiki.

I discovered through trial and error that less is more and now the warning is less urgent. I am sorry that I deleted the warning messages. I did that because I was unsure if the warning was remaining in place even after I made changes and wanted to see if it would reappear. I thought that it was an automatic response. Again I'm sorry I did that.

The article still has warning messages. If I cannot resolve the problems I am perfectly willing to delete all the content. However, I don't know how to delete the whole page.

What I want from that page is a simple, non-contentious article about a living person. I cited as reference the persons own biography page on their own web site. How can that be contested? The reason for the page is to list the persons bibliography so that other pages can make reference to those books. Is that improper? It's not original research the authors books are available on Amazon. So much for Tian Dayton.

On the Wikipedia:Verifiability policy page under "self-published and questionable sources as sources on themselves" I read, "Self-published or questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, especially in articles about themselves...". It goes on to give the conditions under which that is acceptable.

There are other living persons for which I would like to create biographical pages. I know these individuals personally. They are professionals who have biography pages in other places on the internet. Those bio's are brief and would provide incomplete information. Would it be proper to have those persons write an autobiography, upload the document and then cite it as a source? Some of these persons are notable professionals in the field I intend to write about, and they are mentioned in other articles on the internet, in print and in existing Wikipedia articles. Unfortunately little is available regarding their background, education etc. They are usually mentioned in their associations with events, institutions, op/ed pieces and on blogs and message boards. How do I enter bio articles for persons that are willing to write their own or to give their consent? Would it be acceptable to post a message on the talk page stating that the person for whom the article was written contributed to the content of the page?

Another area of interest to me is covered in the Wikipedia:Self published sources (online and paper) policy section. It states: "Self-published material may, in some circumstances, be acceptable when produced by an established expert on the topic of the article whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable third-party publications." Where this would apply to my efforts is in the area of recording the history of establishing an institution for which I am writing an article. The person who was responsible for creating a boarding school, for example, would be the best source on the early history and time line of that school. Again the best way to handle this would seem to be, writing a paper, say on personal or business letter head, and then uploading that document and citing it as a source. Do you know another way to accomplish the same thing? Would a history page on the school's web site be considered self-published material? And how do I avoid a plagiarism charge if I use that material?

I didn't think A7 applied as the article makes the supported claim that he's the pastor of the fastest growing US church, so it does make a credible claim to importance. I could redirect the page right now for you and close the Afd, instead of having to wait another 7 days.

In looking at all of the criteria of notability, Nathan Johnson (author) seems notable to me.

It is not a matter of invalidating the criteria, but rather following it. Let's start at the beginning. How does the article meets the criteria in WP:GNG or WP:BIO.

Specifically, has he:

1. Received a notable award or honor, or has been often nominated for one;
2. Made a widely recognized contribution that is part of the enduring historical record in his or her specific field;
3. Has he received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. (Nothing in the article meets this criteria.)

I've certainly spent some time reviewing those criteria. Please allow me to respond to them below.

1. -Indeed. He has had the distinct honor of being a published author. Incidentally, he has also been nominated several times for various planning awards and has been recognized and quoted in several reliable, indepented sources--some referenced--for his work in the planning realm.
2. -Indeed. I'm not sure what part of the country you live in, but in Minnesota (and much of the Upper Midwest) people are aware of Pine City's rare rural LGBT pride event and the people who are behind it. His work toward this cause will go down in history. Even GALIP (Gays and Lesbians in Planning) has recognized Johnson for his braveness in this realm.
3. I and others I've consulted with (who unfortunately don't contribute to Wikipedia) disagree. A simple Google of his name and a combination of his city or profession brings up countless useful matches, from reliable sources, independent of the subject.

I appreciate your feedback and I appreciate that there are checks and balances on Wikipedia to increase its reliability. I am working on this page not to abuse or violate Wikipedia's standards, but because I've been asked to by others and it concerns me that it's been very difficult to establish this useful page. Hey, mate. I had added a PROD to this article before you saw what I was seeing, and hit it with the CSD. I did some research and actually found some additional sources and refs for some of the work. I gave the author of the article a hand, and did some basic wikification, and changed the wording enough to get it off the hook for copy vio. I'm not totally convinced of the notability of the subject, but by branching out a bit on Google scholar and Google books, I am finding some sources that can be used. For starters stop adding copyrighted material or replacing the material that has been removed by others to make it more compliant. The references need to be added inline in order to been seen as references and not links. I have added one as an example. I would add some awards to the article, but only a few important ones and stay away from copyright violations. The employment history reads like a resume and needs to be cut down to just a few highlights in a non-list form. Hi, I have created a small article on the topic "kapil muni tiwary" for which I have got the notice that it may be deleted. I strongly feel that a person like Dr Tiwary deserves an entry in Wikipedia. He has influenced the minds of scores and scores of people by his knowledge and skills in Bihar,India for more than 30 years. He has also written two books, out of which one is on Panini's grammar. I know that i need to write a little more about him citing some of the facts of his achievements. In case you still decide to delete. please do let me know the details.

What I don't get...

Why do you and other Wikipedia "experts" need to be so fascist about things? How am I vandalizing anything? All I'm doing is trying to make a positive contribution to these pages. I suggested you look at the pages "1979", "1983", "1987"... all of which have information on Michael Jackson releasing his solo albums. And those weren't even made by me. They were made by another Wikipedia "expert". So please, stop being ignorant... and read through other articles more carefully before labeling someone else's contributions as "vandalism". I'm sorry if I sounded rude at all, but really... I'm being serious. Please take a look at the other articles I mentioned. Thank you.

I suggest you read WP:CIVIL. Your comments are not at all appreciated. I don't care if you are being serious, your comments here are still rude and not in line with the Wikipedia community. If you had read the comment I left on your talk page you would have seen that the existence of an item is by no means an excuse for something similar to be added to Wikipedia. In the case of the albums, they are not notable nor are they international. The release dates pertain to U.S. or UK only release dates. I am very new to this and need your help.

Mason Novick has produced not only Juno but 500 Days of Summer and Redeye, neither involving Diablo Cody. He was an agent at ICM before opening his own production company MXN Productions. He is credited with discovering Diablo Cody while she was writing a blog and encouraged her to write a screenplay which was to become Juno.

There are many credible cites but because I am new to this I don't know how to do this.

Profile Club

Just wanted to clarify that I'm not allowed to write an article about web site. Admittedly a small website, but it gets over 1000 views a day at least. And most members stay on for a good hour. It's a small web cam/audio chat site. But I think it deserves a wikipedia article. Rather than taking the discussion off Wikipedia, it is probably easier to discuss here. The only qualification for inclusion is the article needs to meet Wikipedia criteria. Unfortunately, the article fails to meet the criteria in WP:WEB. BTW - Size and/or popularity is not part of the criteria for inclusion in Wikipedia. You can certainly write an article about the subject; however, if it does not meet the Wikipedia criteria for notability it will most likely be removed. If the article is removed numerous times it runs the risk of being salted (banned from being created). I left you a welcome message on your talk page that discusses the creation of articles. Could you explain why the William J. Gedney article was marked for speedy deletion? What must be done for it to meet the minimum requirements of a stub? Perhaps I accidentally saved a version where I added a biography template but didn't change the info to make it relevant. I have since removed the biography template. I wish to agree with the user above who posted comments about your over-eagerness to find fault with other users' work. I feel that the way in which you seek to delete any page which does not conform exactly to your own exacting standards is detrimental to the future of this great online resource. I also find the way in which you deal with users rather abrupt. Oh, and I have read WP:CIVIL, and am well within my rights to make these comments, whether you want them here or not.

Thanks for your comment. First of all, I would not be so quick to associate yourself with the above user. His edits were indeed vandalism. Your edits were not vandalism, but only a misunderstanding of Wikipedia criteria.

As to your comments, they are not my standards, they are Wikipedia criteria established by consensus by the community. I nominated your article because it did not appear to meet the criteria. You were given a chance to meet the criteria, but either chose not to or were unable to. The article was twice deleted, not by me, but by two others that agreed with the assessment. Additionally, the article did not survive the Deletion Review you requested.

If I was abrupt in my communication with you, I apologize. I do not remember our interaction, but I believe I referred you to the criteria in question and suggested you contact me with any questions. I will agree with you that I can sometimes be abrupt, I have a "real" life that gets in the way of Wikipedia.

I am glad you have read WP:CIVIL, but I suggest that you reread it and understand your comments that state you are, "well within my rights to make these comments, whether you want them here or not" and your invitation to others to join in on this discussion are considered to be uncivil behavior. I will assume those comments stem from both your frustration of having an article deleted and your inexperience in the Wikipedia community and point you to another section that describes good faith edits.

For one thing it is not a reference. References are put between ref and /ref tags. The purpose of the statement was unclear. If it is a book, then why does the article say that he published only 2 books. Fully understand, thanks for the clarification. The articles published in other magazines (e.g. Sunday World) are not available online, however they do exist in real-life, as does the HotPress article. How would you normally resolve such a situation? Some of the articles are available on the subject's website, but I chose not to reference that as it would be a biased source.

I think you are misreading the maintenance tags. The article has not been nominated for deletion. Basically the tags are there to note the article has deficiencies related to Wikipedia criteria for inclusion. The main issue is the article is missing reliable sources to support the article. I am having 2 conversations with you at the moment. on the same subject! I am totally lost as to wikipedia's reliable sources policy? I am the most reliable source of information on The Bullet Project in existence throughout our solar system? It is a new project, aiming to educate future generations world wide. We aim to share information from the building of a supersonic land vehicle, through testing and finally attempting a world land speed record! it covers Education Science, Mathematics, Engineering and many more subjects for which, as the project developed, I wanted to add to the article. As the article developed, I would have thought that figures of authority on these subjects could edit and input fact relating to the subject. there is also a "cite" banner on the page and I have added "ref and cite" within the article?

The first sentence in the General notability guideline in WP:COMPANY is simply, "If a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to satisfy the inclusion criteria for a stand-alone article." I am not sure what I can add to that. Individuals that are familiar with topics can add to articles, but WP:COI is a concern. Your comment that you have added references to article is true, but the references do not meet Wikipedia criteria. (Should you have an interest in reading criteria that is in place to help insure the quality of Wikipedia, I have referenced the page that discusses the criteria above.) Specifically, one reference is unverifiable and the other refers to a picture of something else and should probably be a link – something that I tried to get you to accept numerous times.

With regards to your last paragraph, Wikipedia has stated what you need to do to bring the article up to standards. The documentation is there so there is no question about what is needed and to help insure a quality project. If you do not have time to read them, I am sorry, but I would have thought you would want your article to be part of a quality project. BTW - the criteria has been created by volunteers like myself and approved by the community, all volunteers. No problem. First off, let me say it can be frustrating having an article deleted or even marked as in need of improvement. Yes, I speak from experience.

I would not get to focused on format - someone will always be there to help with the formating. I would focus on providing references to support the article. Are there any newspaper articles that have been written about the project? How about grants provided to fund it? TV reports? University coverage? Also, the {{coi}} tag only serves as a marker to advise the reader the article is being edited by someone close to the subject, it is not automatically a bad thing. It will probably be removed towards the end of the creation process after there is agreement that it is a neutral article. ttonyb (talk) 05:48, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

There is no immediate danger of the article being deleted; however, if someone were to nominate it for Speedy Deletion or AfD that could change. Because the article does not have any references, it would probably fail the review. Unfortunately, you may have to accept that it is too early in the Project's lifecycle for inclusion in Wikipedia. I believe that in both cases, the Web sites cited originally copied us from the earlier article.
