Kumbazha Valiya Cathedral

[edit]

Kumbazha is a renowned and beautiful place in central Travancore located near the banks of river Achankovil. People from different religions and culture live here with divine peace and harmony by the blessings from Holy Mother of Jesus Christ St. Mary and the Orthodox Valiya Cathedral, located at the heart of Kumbazha is a source of peace and power for many people. The church is named after St. Mary and is blessed with the Holy Relics of Apostle St. Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ and the foundation for the church was laid by St. Gregorios of Parumala, the Patron Saint of Malankara. Blessings of St. Gregorios of Parumala mark the church as the centre of hope and a place of devotees. At the dawn of twenty-first century with the past glory of 129 years, St Mary’s Valiya Cathedral is the prominent centre in Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. When we go through the annals of history, various stages through which the church grew can be seen with the blessings of Almighty God. www.kumbazhavaliyacathedral.in

In the year 1833, Christians from Makkamkunnu, Kumbahza, Mylapra, Kadammanitta, Vazhamuttom and from other nearly places congregating at Makkamkunnu under the leadership of Thengumtharayil Kochitty Tharakan and other church leaders.

Through our forefathers joined the congregation by passage of time, they felt that a church is necessary for the spiritual awakening of people at Kumbazha. Late Fr. Kochitty Geevarghese took initiations to start a congregation in the name “Kumbazha Bathel Church’’ at Pinattummoottil plot near Kumbazha junction in the year 1887. Practical difficulties shifted the church to the places like Kadackal, Konnallur Ooralipurayidam etc. But it could not help to establish the church. The strong desire and perseverance of our forefathers led to the establishment of our church and in buying 1 acre 60 cent of land from Keettethu Krishnan Chettiyar by collecting money from well- wishers and devotees. The present place where the church is situated and the 1 acre 60 cent plot which was bought from Chettiyar was registered in the name of Thengumtharayil Kochitty Kathanar and got approval from the government to establish a church. At first a shed was used for worship and for the church activities. The families that stood strongly for the initial growth and development of the church include Puthumannil (Ashariath), Pulikkeezhil, Thundiyil, Kumbukkattu, Moolamuriyil, Kallichethu, Mangottu, Vanalloor, Kadackal, Kavanal – Sankarathil , Manakkattumannil, Thazhathethil, Melethil , Panamuriyil, Maruthoor, Varuvathiyil, Pinattummoottil and Muthirakkalayil according to the historical evidences. The next generations from these families stand as the majority among the Christian families in Kumbazha which is a matter of pride for the church.

St. Gregorios of Parumala and our Church

St. Gregorios of Parumala, the Patron Saint of Malankara Orthodox Church laid the foundation for Holy Altar in the name of St. Mary in the year 1894. The church was built with stone and wood and the devotees started worship there. St. Gregorios, who was also the Diocesan Metropolitan of Thumpamon visited Holy Jerusalem in the year 1895 and before his departure, Holy Father visited our church. ‘Oorshalem Yathra Vivaranam’ the first travelogue in Malayalam Literature written by Parumala Thirumeni shows details about the money collected from our church for the expenditure of his Jerusalem journey.

Worship and Service

The Church became blessed by the presence of Parumala Thirumeni and after the establishment of the church, Rev.Fr.T.G.Gheevarghese, S/O Thengumtharayil Ghevarghese Kathanar and Alunilkkunnathil Abraham Kathanar took charge of the church and led the worship.

Later Alunilkkunnathil Abraham Kathanar was transferred and Makkamkunnu Kizhakkeveettil Pathrose Kathanar took charge in our church.

By the dawn of 1902, there was a dispute among some church members and a few of them moved from the church under Kizhakkeveettil Kathanar.

In order to pay some debts, 75 cent of land in the ownership of church was given to Varuvathiyil Koshy Varghese for money by Gheevarghese Kathanar. These awakened and change occurred in the mind of church members. After that, for the smooth running of church activities, 9 representatives from each founder family in the church and the vicar Kochitty Varghese Kathanar made an agreement for all church activities and tried to make the church administration systematically in 1903.

In 1936, the existing church was beautified and made safer. Late lamented Puthenkavil Geevarughese Mar Philoxenos, the then Metropolitan of Thumpamon Diocese blessed the church and named as ‘St. Marys’s Church’. Up to 1940, Thengumtharayil T. G. Abraham Kathanar was also appointed to attend church activities. By 1941, Sankarahil Njana Sikhamani Kathanar also took charge of the church and both the priests conducted Holy Mass alternatively.

After the arrival of Njana Sikhamani Kathanar, by 1943, there was a small dispute between church members and they formed two groups and stood for two administrative systems. This circumstance was continued for some time and the problem was solved by the arrival of Puthencavil Thirumeni. In the year 1949, Puthencavil Kochu Thirumeni visited the church and called church General Body. Problems were solved and a new administrative body was appointed including beloved ones from both the groups.

In this condition, P.T Gevarghese Cor- Episcopa was appointed as the vicar of the church with Njana Sikhamani Kathanar and Thengumtharayil T. G. Abraham Kathanar as assistants. Later T. G Abraham Kathanar moved from the church and the Cor-Episcopa and Njana Sikhamani Kathanar conducted services alternatively.

In 1952, ¾ cent plot was bought from Moolamuriyil M.I Cherian for money and a Holy Shrine was built in the name of St. George in 1953. In the same year five newly elected Metropolitan of Malankara, Mathews Mar Athanasios, Mathews Mar Ivanios, Pathrose Mar Osthathios, Daniel Mar philoxenos, Mathews Mar Coorilos were given a warm welcome in co-operation with nearby churches. It was organized as part of blessings ceremony of Holy Shrine and the welcoming was organized at Kumbazha market ground.

In 1957, near the northern part of the church, a beautiful building was constructed for priests and it was decided to be used as both Office and Parsonage.

In 1964, by the decision of General Body of the church, Rev. Njana Sikhamani Kathanar was shifted from the responsibilities of the church by Diocesan Metropolitan (Ordinance No. 35/64 dated 06.03.1964). Rev. Fr. C.A John Chodiyakkadavil who newly joined the church as a member was appointed Assistant vicar.

Very Rev. Thengumtharayil Geevarghese Cor-Episcopa who stood firmly right from the beginning for the church moved away because of his old age and Fr. C. A John became the Vicar of Church.

New Church Construction (1964 -1975)

The General Body of the Church decided to reconstruct Holy Madbaha and for that, H.G. Daniel Mar Philoxenos Metropolitan arrived on 2 nd August 1964. After the Holy Qurbana, foundation for the new Madbaha was laid by His Grace. Vicar of the church Rev. Fr. C. A John, Mr. K.I Varghese Kochuveettil (Trustee for 10 years), assistant trustee Mr. Skariah Kumbukkattu, Secretary Mr. M. G. Mathew Maruthickal, assistant secretary Sri. M. E. Mathew Manikanethu are rightly remembered for their service. The beautiful church was built as a result of prayers, hard work and financial help of the church members facilitated the completion of construction work at faster rate. Church members individually and collectively helped the construction work physically, mentally and financially. People from other religions too helped in the construction work. Mr. Gopalapillai of Korkattu Kozhencherry gave woods required for roof work for the church profitably and we thank him for his magnanimous mind. We are grateful to the contractors, masons, carpenters and all workers especially Mr. Gabriel and Mr. Sanadhan for their dedicated service for the completion of church construction. All our beloved forefathers and present generation who stood firmly for the church construction are remembered.

Holy Relics of Apostle St. Thomas

St. Thomas is the most pious devotee and Apostle of Jesus Christ. St. Thomas had great faith in Christ and called his fellow- beings even to die for Christ. Getting inspiration from his Master, He came to India and other parts of Asia to spread the seeds of Gospel. He was the one responsible to found Christianity in India. During his mission, Apostle died for Christ at Mylapur near Chennai. And from that Holy land our church was blessed with the Holy Relics of St. Thomas. The central Altar of Kumbazha Valiya Cathedral is named after St. Thomas and people had great faith in the power of the Apostle. Many church fathers celebrated Holy Mass in that Altar they all witnessed the extreme power and blessings from him. Our church members had great faith and as a result we all desired to have the Holy Relics of the Apostle and our desire became fulfilled on 6 th July 2009. Earlier, the General Body decided to arrange all necessary things to make the programmes of receiving the Holy Relics a great success and it happened all the way. We specially thank Mr. Saji Varghese Thundiyil to his great enthusiasm and help rendered in getting Holy Relics of Apostle from Mylapur, Chennai. On 5 th July 2009, after the Holy Mass at Chennai St.Thomas Mount, the selected Managing Committee members from the Church including Vicar Rev. Fr. Roy M. Joy, Trustee Mr. Anil K.Titus, Secretary Mr. Jinu James, Mr.Jose Mathew and Mr.N.George received the Holy Relics from Chennai Diocesan Metropolitan H.G. Dr.Yuhanon Mar Dioscoros. It was followed a General Meeting inaugurated by the Justice Mr. Benjamin Koshy the then Chief Justice of Patna (Later Chairman of Kerala State Human Rights Commission) presided by H.G. Cleemis Metropolitan. Association Secretary Dr. George Joseph, priests and people from various fields gave felicitations. Later, a room was extended for placing the Holy Relics at the left side to the central Madbaha and now it is a prayer room where people come and pray with all faith and trust. It is open every day from dawn to dusk and prayer is done every day. Now it is a centre of hope and people are blessed all after placing it on the Holy Relics and it gives miraculous cure to many sick people. The spiritual awakening brought to the church was a great thing and thereby Kumbazha Valiya Cathedral has become a ‘Marthoman Pilgrimage Centre’ and the Holy Relics of St. Thomas is a great blessing to our church and Pathanamthitta.

Stone Cross

Holy Cross is the symbol of Christianity. The great power and might of the cross is the closely related with the life of Christians. Always cross is the symbol of hope and blessings. The stone cross located at the western side of the church is a centre of refugee for all. The stone cross is made from beautiful ‘Krishnashila’ and the beauty of the stone cross shows the beauty of divinity. On 10 th January 2009, the holy stone cross was blessed by the then Metropolitan of Kunnamkulam Diocese H.G.Poulose Mar Milithios who was designated to be the Catholicos of the East in the presence of Chengannur Diocesan Metroplitan H.G.Thomas Mar Athanasios. The different sides of the cross is picturised with different images related to the life of St.Mary. People belonging to all religions and sections of life lite candles and pay their donations and get blessings from St.Mary. When the church is closed, people could pray before the cross and the holy cross has the power to wipe out all devilish power. It is the symbol of divine cure and may have received blessings from it. The stone cross is like Beacon of hope and power and people could place all their troubles upon it and what people could receive is divine power.

Holy Lent (Sept. 01 to Sept. 08)

Kumbazha Valiya Cathedral is named after St.Mary and therefore the lents of St.Mary is well celebrated. Among them, “Ettunombu Perunal’’ is celebrated with more devotion and importance. For the last 90 years, Ettunombu Prunnal is an integral part of the church. Eight Metropolitans of our Church lead Holy Qurbana for the eight days and our church is the first to have eight Metropolitans for Ettunombu Perunnal. People from various parts of Pathanamthitta district and nearby churches celebrate this holy lent and have great faith in its power. Also people belonging to different religions visit the church and pay their contributions to the church and ask for the blessings of Holy Mother of Church, St. Mary. On the eve of 7 th day, historically famous “Chempeduppu Rassa’’ is done which is the most important part during the 8 days. People from all religions come to attend the “Chempeduppu Rassa” and the blessings of St.Mary is bestowed upon all who take part in the Rassa. Prayer meetings, awareness programmes, chain prayer, conferences and various programmes are arranged as part of the Ettunompu Perunnal by our church organizations. Thus, our church is known of ‘Manarcad of the East’ because of its might glory of power.
