[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that the username you have chosen, "SuchThatCast", seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of something other than yourself. Please note that you may not edit on behalf of a company, group, institution, product, or website, and Wikipedia does not allow usernames that are promotional or accounts that are shared. If you are willing to use a personal account, please take a moment to create a new account or request a username change that represents only yourself as an individual. You should also read our conflict of interest guideline and remember that promotional editing is not acceptable regardless of the username you choose. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Alexf(talk) 11:23, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Response to Alexf Thanks for looking out for this. I have read the guidelines and I hope and believe that I am within the rules. I am the host of a podcast in which I interview contemporary philosophers, and these episodes often contain biographical and theoretical information not revealed elsewhere. Because of this, I wanted to include some of this in the relevant (already existing) wikipedia pages. I chose the same username as the name of the podcast precisely because I wanted full transparency. I will and have not promoted the podcast in any other way than to post a link to specific episodes if it contains information not already in the wikipedia article (I am also aware of and support the no-follow policy, so it's not meant to be promotional in any way). Furthermore, I am the only individual using this username, but when I do so I thought it would be fair to be open about my role as host for the podcast (which I've also explicitly commented when I've updated articles). I do understand your concerns and I think it's great that you're looking out for fraudulent accounts (I'm a big supporter of Wikipedia), but I hope you will find this to be within the guidelines. SuchThatCast (talk) 17:03, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Posting links to podcasts that are hosted on a site you run is pretty much spamming and also probably falls foul of WP:ELNO. Take a moment to read the guidance on appropriate external links. QuiteUnusual (talk) 08:49, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will probably not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you do intend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Request reason:

Thanks for the clarification. Since the main concern seems to be "Links mainly intended to promote a website" and/or "Blogs, personal web pages and most fansites", I should probably explain that the podcast in question consists of interviews with contemporary philosophers. I can see that I would fail many of the requirements for external links if this was a podcast in which I express my views on these individuals, but it is much more of a channel for them to express their own views and reveal information about themselves not published elsewhere. Each episode has also been reviewed and accepted by the individuals themselves. Since the interviews often focus on their background and career paths, they contain lots of information not available anywhere else - and this is why I thought they would be of potential interest to anyone looking up their wikipedia entries. The podcast is entirely non-profit, creative commons and has no agenda other than to provide insight into the careers of these individuals, and the only reason I wanted to post these on Wikipedia is for the benefit of the community. I am myself a professional philosopher, and my only motivation is to provide more information about some of these important contemporary philosophers. I hope you will find that I am not in the wrong. If not, please advice as to how I should best proceed SuchThatCast (talk) 16:57, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You should be aware that "promotion" as we define it here most definitely includes promotion of one's own non-profit, pro bono projects as well as commercial spamming. Wikipedia does not exist to promote your cause, however noble. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:09, 25 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no promotion going on here, neither for a cause nor a Web site, simply links to highly relevant, neutral POV information directly from the mouth of the entry individuals themselves. The links do in no way touch upon the criteria set out in WB:PROMOTION, when it comes to being advocacy, opinion pieces, scandal mongering, self-promotion or advertising. If you look at my edits, they consist of three links in already existing wikipedia entries directly to the relevant interview. I find it unfortunate that none of this would have been an issue if I had not been completely transparent about my role as host, which is otherwise encouraged in the guidelines. Transparency should be encouraged as long as the other guidelines are not violated, which I cannot see that I have, neither in principle nor in action. If you still won't unblock, I would appreciate it if you could change my username (using my real name) and I will refrain from posting new links to the Web site. I'm not entirely sure how these blocks work, but I hope you can at last agree that there is no bad intent here, so there should at least be no reason for being banned permanently and/or on basis of IP

Decline reason:

This block applies to you, the person - and while this block is in place you, the person, may not edit Wikipedia. An unblock request must be WP:GAB-compliant - in part, you must recognize that the behaviour that led to the block is improper (and as already advised, linking to your own website is improper) and that the behaviour will not recur (which you're merely arguing that you should be permitted to continue). As such, there is no reason to remove this block, and you should be advised to remember my first advice regarding blocks as a whole. Ok. My interpretation of the rules was that it was not wrong to link to one's own web site as long as it merely was a channel for other contributors (i.e. podcast guests) and did not provide subjective, biased or personal information, but I understand that this is not the case now -- and I suppose I see good reasons for why this has to be strict so that things don't get out of hand. I accept this, and would appreciate it if you could change my username as specified and remove the block. I really never intended to do anything but improve Wikipedia (I actually teach computer ethics, and have been a strong supporter for a long time). I would really appreciate it if these blocks won't be associated with my name and can be removed, and I hope you will agree since there was never any malicious intent. Thanks again for your patience, and I hope to start contributing properly and according to the rules again now. SuchThatCast (talk) 08:20, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
