Map symbology
[edit]Hallo Christian- I saw the changes you made to the Gravettian and Upper Paleolithic articles. While the maps to which you link are useful, I think they would look better--at least the thumbnails--if the points were symbolized differently, say with a much smaller symbol. As a thumbnail, the Gravettian map you replaced, even if outdated, represented the site locations in a way that conveyed the site locations better than the ROCEEH one using that default map marker icon employed in many online mapping systems, which crowd each other out at such a scale. I'd suggest something more like a small point or a fine "+". Eric talk 12:13, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- Dear Eric - Thanks for your comment, I appreciate your idea. Originally I wanted to keep things as simple as possible and use Kartographer's standard symbols, but I agree that it looks quite crowded with a larger number of points. Following your suggestion, I researched how to use a simpler symbol in Kartographer, but unfortunately I couldn't find a good solution. All examples on the help page (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:Kartographer) as well as the list of available icons (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Extension:Kartographer/Icons) do not replace the pin, but add a icon inside the pin.
- If you have a good resource on how to customize Kartographer maps, that would be much welcome! Sommergeo (talk) 12:50, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- Update: I changed "marker-size" to "small", the best solution I found so far. Sommergeo (talk) 13:23, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi- Thanks for the links to the Kartographer documentation. I noticed that size option and wondered if it would help. Definitely looks better in the full map, but doesn't seem to be reflected in the thumbnail. I posted a question on the discussion page for the Maki icons: mw:Help_talk:Extension:Kartographer/Icons#Typographic_symbols; maybe someone will have an idea. Eric talk 13:29, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
