Ref canvassing

Please slow down on the link canvassing; while some of those links are probably appropriate (e.g., this addition of a photo collection), I don't think it's useful to add lecture links that appear to be accessible to people affiliated with UCSD. OhNoitsJamie ^Talk 22:44, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what you mean by "link-canvassing" I am adding relevant content in the form of external links to library online sources to pages-people-places discussed in the audio and visual material. Even if an item is initially described as "ucsd only" it can be requested by an outside individual if they would like to view the material. Happy to explain more if needed. Canvassing refs to a single site is edging into WP:REFSPAM territory. I question how useful many of those links are if someone has to request access, which will the case for the vast majority of our readers. OhNoitsJamie ^Talk 20:38, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I read your link to citation spamming and that is not what i am doing. I work for an academic library and I am adding links to objects in our digital collection - not linking to our general digital collection page - that are content of or by the wikipedia page mentioned. Rhe science-people are links to lectures given by these well-know scientists. the Papua New Guinea wiki-pages link to images, films and sound recordings of the people and places listed on the Wikipedia pages. These are valuable academic sources, that's why they are a part of the digital library. It's NOT linking a bunch of pages to one single site and you assumed. I am not linking to my employer - I am linking to primary source material. I can understand if I just posted a link to my Library's website on each and every entry- but I am not doing that. There is wiki page about a person and we have primary source material of this person speaking and I am linking to that resource. Or there is a wiki page about a place and I am linking to a collection of photographs of that place. I am adding citations and primary source material to add facts to the wiki. Museum curators, librarians, archivists, and similar are encouraged to help improve Wikipedia, or to share their information in the form of links to their resources. If a link cannot be used as a reliable source, it may be placed under further reading or external links if it complies with the external links guideline.
