Thanks for welcoming me. As I am quite active in German WP, I am not a total newbie but of course I am always thankful for advice concerning the specifics of en WP. Though I am a translator, my English is not always 100% perfect, that's why I will concentrate on minor edits and interwiki links. --Proofreader 17:02, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:08, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, @User:Davyd Allan Tyner - you tried to add a middle name to the name of Evelyn Peace Turner's husband. This was reverted because it was unsourced. The problem is that such additions, while they may factually be true, are inside knowledge. Every information in Wikipedia must be verifiable (Wikipedia:Verifiability) and thus be based on Wikipedia:Reliable sources. For other authors and any reader of the article it is not possible to check if this middle name is true and if you, the source, are actually his son. Think of it: Any anonymous person could take on the username "Davyd Allan Tyner" and then add any sort of information, also information that is factually wrong. You certainly would not be happy if that happened. What would you do in such a case? You would ask where that information comes from. That is why we insist on reliable sources. These can be books, newspaper articles or other news media reports. For people who are not the most famous, they may be hard to come by, but we just need anything tangible where we can say: in that book or that article this middle name was mentioned. This in itself does not automatically make the information true - the source may be in error - but people could then assess what kind of source that is and what would speak for trusting the source and what against it. This review process would be next to impossible if we accepted additions that do not state verifiable sources. I hope you now understand why the edit was reverted. Don't take it personally, it is, in a way, a sign of scientific rigor we must adhere to. --Proofreader (talk) 19:20, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
