Thanks
[edit]I just wanted to thank you, as technically you're the only person who's given just "support" on my RfA. I appreciate it.
I normally wouldn't bother, but in light of someone actually posting on my talk page telling me it might be in my best interests to withdraw the nomination, I figure I will, but I don't know how.
If you could also explain about the Recent Changes Patrol and New Page Patrol, I'd appreciate it as well.
Thanks again, Clint 05:43, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the prompt response. Yes, I'd like to remove my RfA. Considering the massive amount of "oppose" votes in so little time for such a minor reason (though I can understand the general caution), I figure its not worth my time to pursue it right now. I also figure it will help in the future if I have a withdrawn as opposed a rejection if I ever apply again... Clint 05:55, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
ISBN
[edit]With due respect to you, I am astonished that you "find it hard to believe that Indian books do not carry ISBN numbers." THis is called as Cultural Divide, where in you are not able to accept that there is a world outside your country. By the way, even Bible did not have an ISBN number when it was published for 19 centuries in 200 languages till the 20th century. I am not talking about one word or one article alone, but I am worried, that most of the Wikipedians do not understand other cultures, other countries or other languages. In India we have Medical Colleges (not medical schools). We are not permitted to have an article about "Medical Colleges". Instead the article on Medical College automatically redirects to Medical School. I get a reply that there is "nothing called as Medical College" What to say about this. The truth is that the administrator is NOT AWARE of the concept of Medical College. WHen he does not know anything he automatically assumes that it does not exist. In this regard, (I am sorry to say) I find the users from the so called developed American and European nations who are so adamant and do not even believe that there is a world where there are drinks other than cola, and dress other than shirts. The same with ISBN :) :-) Doctor Bruno 18:29, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Apologies for butting into this conversation. Given that ISBNs are universal in the west, I see why you're skeptical. Nevertheless, I assure you that it is still common practice for books to be ISBN-less in India. ISBNs are common (though not universal) in English-language publications, but are quite rare in vernacular publications. You can verify this yourself if you like by going over to the British Library's Public Catalogue, and running a search on "purananuru" (a classical text on which there've been quite a few Tamil academic works written recently). If you look at the ten or so post-1990 Tamil-language publications from all the results the search throws up, you'll see that only two of them have an ISBN listed. The results are more or less the same for any other Tamil term one looks up - and these, being books the British Library thought important enough to acquire, actually come from the better publishers, who're obviously more likely to acquire ISBNs than smaller publishers. -- Arvind 15:04, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
I never said that "INDIA does not use ISBN #s on books" . That was a misinterpretation. Please be kind enough to read my posts and see. I told that "95 % of Indian books do not have ISBN." Also books published before 1980 do not have ISBN. Only a very few percent of Indian books (that too technical books) or books by big (international) publishers have ISBN. I don't know how I can explain this to you. This is a fact. And this is the practical situation here in India. How can 'I' explain a social phenomenon. You have to ask the publishers. But the truth is that a vernacular book or a book circulated/sold inside India has no advantages if it has ISBN or not. On the other hand, getting ISBN number involves cost (which may be a small amount for Americans who give in Dollars, but the expense involved in getting ISBN in India may cost more than 50 copies. How can you expect every publisher to get ISBN number when they have obvious benefits with the ISBN number
I am glad that you are "curious" and not "astonished". Curiosity is the beginning of learning.
I have written 6 medical books. Only 5 of those have ISBN. 3 publishers got the ISBN Numbers. The other publisher did not get the number. What can I do.Doctor Bruno 17:32, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Uhh...just to let you know, I still need help with my signature question in the Village Pump. Thanks. Jonathan W 00:15, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
I think there's a problem with my sig. I type it in like this:
<font size="2" color=#00FF00 style="background:#884400"> Jonathan</font>
And it's supposed to look like this:
Jonathan
But when I type my signature, it looks like this!!!
<font size="2" color=#00FF00 style="background:#884400">Jonathan</font> 02:57, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Do you know how I can fix it? (How do other users like lightdarkness not have this problem?)
I hope you don't mind me asking you personally instead of putting the question on the Reference Desk.
Jonathan 02:57, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
FINALLY my signature worked!!! Check it out: Jonathan talk File:Canada flag 300.png 00:33, 15 April 2006 (UTC) See Wikipedia:Village Pump (technical)#Signature. We added "span style" to my sig. and that seemed to make all the difference.
IP ranges
[edit]Hi! I have marked a page you created, Onthost/IP Ranges, for speedy deletion, but the title seems to suggest you have planned to place that under your userpage. If that is so, move it to the correct namespace (and mark the resulting redirect for speedy deletion, please). Anyway, be advised that the information should be (and is) already present in IPv4 subnetting reference and Classless Inter-Domain Routing. --Mormegil 21:11, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, I've moved the text to User:Onthost/IP Ranges - I hope that works, it by itself really isn't main namespace material, at least at its location -- Tawker 23:24, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if there is a template for no personal attacks on yourself, but its a pretty easy mistake to make, don't fret about it :) -- Tawker 23:33, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi there, I've just finally managed to upload a new version of the .NET Bot Framework. It now has support for getting the links to a particular article, using the Editor.GetLinksToArticle(string Article) function. All functions are properly documented using XML documentation. Many of you had issues with opening the ZIP file - these issues have now been properly resolved. The new version can be found at the usual URL. Your signature
[edit]Hello there, I was wondering if you would please modify your signature to conform to the guidelines laid out at Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages. The general guidelines are that signatures shouldn't contain images, they shouldn't contain unnecessary internal links or any external links, and they shouldn't be unnecessarily long in Wiki source. The reasoning for this final bit is that overly long signatures tend to overwhelm the actual comments in edit mode, making it hard to track down and respond to specific comments. You can fix your signature by removing any images and external links, any unnecessary links (like links to Wikipedian organizations, articles, or subpages in userspace), and removing excessive color, font, and formatting code. Thank you. --Cyde↔Weys 18:39, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
The "it's a guideline not a policy so I can flagrantly ignore it" tactic is not going to wash. Remove the image from your signature. --Cyde↔Weys 02:12, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- Err, I'd like to just but in here with a suggestion: Commands are unlikely to be effective. It is a guideline and as long as a person is polite while they flout it, that's pretty much the end of it. - brenneman {L} 14:24, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Re: Apple Macintosh
[edit]Thanks for your support. I didn't come to that article looking to take it over or make any controversial edits; what I did is 100% supported by the MoS and standard technical writing format. If this guy thinks that he has the right to revert acceptable MoS changes just because he doesn't like the aesthetics, he needs to be put in line. Ignorance is one thing (I didn't know about this particular nuance of SI formatting until a few years ago), but continuing to argue after being corrected looks foolish. Again, I didn't want to pick a fight, but as I said on the talk page, I am done arguing and will re-add the spaces in line with MoS if he removes them. If it becomes an edit war (hopefully not), I will take this to mediation. *sigh* It just boggles my mind that even some long-time editors don't think the rules apply to them. -- uberpenguin 13:15, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

ISBN's
[edit]Hi Mike, I noticed a discussion that you had with another editor regarding ISBN's for books printed in India. The discussion may be stale, but I thought that I offer my knowledge of the subject. After reading that discussion, I went to my bookshelf to check. My copy of Srimad Bhagavatam, published by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mumbai, has no ISBN that I am able to find. It is a hardbound book with strong pages, a stiched binding, and a plastic dust cover. This same book can no doubt be found on many bookshelves in India. Surprisingly, however, I noticed that some of the books in my posession, also printed in India, which were of much lower quality had ISBN numbers. I'm not sure why that should be the case, but it is. Anyway, I hope that my observations may be of use to someone. Sincerely, --BostonMA 12:47, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Copwatch delete
[edit]In your vote to delete Copwatch you said it should be deleted because it references its own website. I agree that this is generally inappropriate. However, most of this article is about the network of organizations called Copwatch, not the Copwatch.com or Copwatch.net websites. Why not just edit out the mentions of those sites, rather than delete the entire article? The whole reason I added the section on Copwatch.com was to point out that it is not representative of Copwatch organizations and is a completely separate entity. Someone else added the Copwatch.net information, and I don't think it belongs there either. Mycota 21:04, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Thank you for your note. I want to let you know that I do not intend to comment any more on the topic on the public wiki (and would have sent this by e-mail if you had that feature turned on), but I did want to make sure you know I appreciate your support. Nohat 17:09, 15 March 2006 (UTC)
Squidward
[edit]Mike, thanks for the link to the proper Squidward page. Absolutely no hard feelings about poking fun at me: I thought your reply was very funny and perfectly appropriate. I'm happy to get corrected, its the best way to learn. Thanks for your help, Gwernol 18:12, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
My RFA
[edit]Articles you might like to edit, from SuggestBot
[edit]SuggestBot predicts that you will enjoy editing some of these articles. Have fun!
SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.
If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from ForteTuba, SuggestBot's caretaker.
P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot 06:14, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for supporting/opposing/commenting on my request of adminship, sadly the result was 54/20/7 an thus only 73% support votes, resulting in that the nomination failed. As many of you commenting that I have to few main-space edits, I'll try to better my self on that part. If you have any ideas on what kind of articles I could edit, pleas send me a line. :) | →AzaToth

In case you haven't checked back, there was a couple of comments left re: my answer to the copyright question, which you might want to take a look at. If you want to discuss the issue further it would be probably be best to take it to Wikipedia talk:No legal threats. Thanks for the feedback and feel free to correct me if I'm making any newbie admin mistakes! Cheers, Petros471 21:05, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

.NET Bot Framework Update 1
[edit]Hi there, I've just finally managed to upload a new version of the .NET Bot Framework. It now has support for getting the links to a particular article, using the Editor.GetLinksToArticle(string Article) function. All functions are properly documented using XML documentation. Many of you had issues with opening the ZIP file - these issues have now been properly resolved. The new version can be found at the usual URL. Thanks, Werdnabot (DNBF)/T\C on behalf of Werdna648 T/C\@ 02:42, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks so much for voting! Thanks so much for voting on my request for adminship. I have decided to withdraw my nomination as it seems that consensus will not be reached. If you voted in support, thanks for putting your trust in me to be a good admin. If you voted in opposition, thank you as well for your constructive criticism as it will only help me be a better Wikipedian and perhaps help if/when I apply for adminship again sometime in the future.

Special note to spamlist users: Apologies for the formatting issues in previous issues. This only recently became a problem due to a change in HTML Tidy; however, I am to blame on this issue. Sorry, and all messages from this one forward should be fine (I hope!) -Ral315

Hello, Onthost. An automated process has found and removed a fair use image used in your userspace. The image (Image:1915 Dance by Rodchenko.jpg) was found at the following location: User talk:Onthost/Archive. This image was removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image was replaced with Image:Example.jpg, so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image to replace it with. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 22:54, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

I noticed this image was missing a license tag; your summary said you colored a public domain image, so I assumed that you were releasing it as public domain as well. If this is not the case, please feel free to change the tag to whatever you feel is appropriate. Thanks. Shell babelfish 16:42, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
