Mercury is the closets planet to the sun. It is a very heavy planet as it consists mainly of iron. After Earth, Mercury is the next densest planet. Mercury's surface is covered with large craters that have been caused by collisions with asteroids and comets. Mercury has a very thin atmosphere. Highest temperature: approximately 430 degrees C. Lowest temperature:-180 degrees C. It takes this planet 88 day to orbit the sun and 59 days to rotate on its own axis. - Venus
Venus is the second planet in our solar system. The atmosphere if Venus predominantly consists pf carbon dioxide. Venus also does not have an ozone layer, As a result the UV rays of the sun decompose almost all the water. This causes Venus to be a dry planet . Venus has many volcanoes on its surface. It is the hottest planet in our solar system . Average temperature :approximately 467 degrees C. Orbiting the sun takes 225 days and it takes 243 days to rotate around its own axis, Venus is approximately 108 million kilometers away from the sun. it has no moons.venus

Mars is a planet with an ice cold desert. There are dust storms which produce yellow dust clouds. Mars is also known as the "RED PLANET" , as it its surface is red. Temperatures range from 17 degrees C to -87 degrees C. Orbiting the sun takes 687 days and rotation around its own axis takes 24,6 hours. Mars is approximately 228 million kilometers from the sun. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. Jupiter is known as a gas giant as it does not any solid surfaces. Jupiter is a very stormy planet. - Saturn
Saturn is famous for the beautiful rings around it. it is also a gas giant, and is the second largest planet in our solar system . Saturn is mostly made up of hydrogen and helium, the two lightest elements in the universe. This makes Saturn the lightest planet in our solar system. Average temperature :-185 degrees C. - Uranus
Uranus is also a gas giant. Uranus does not rotate in the same manner as its fellow planets; it spins on its side. Uranus has rings. Average temperature : approximately -221 degrees C. Neptune is the smallest pf the four gas giants. Neptune has a large white cloud in its atmosphere that moves around at a high speed. This causes the planet to be very windy. Pluto wasn't a planet at first mainly because it was very small, Meaning they could not see it. It is called a dwarf planet. it is very cold on Pluto, approximately -230 degrees C. British take-over of diamond-rich land in Griqualand West

- Diamonds were first found along Vaal river in the northern cape in 1867. The first diamonds were found in rivers. Diggers collected small stones from the bottom of a river, and washed and sorted them, hoping to find diamonds. Many people hoped to get rich, but most were unsuccessful. Later on, diamonds were found in the ground. These were called 'dry diggings'. The most important were at Kimberley.Diamond
After the discovery of diamonds , an argument began about who owned the land where they had been found. The four groups who claimed the area were the Griqua, the Batlhaping, and the governments of Orange free state and the Transvaal. A committee and eventually he decided that the land belonged to the Griqua. The Griqua chief, Nicolaas Waterboer, asked the British for help to control the diamond fields as the coloney of Griqualand West. History of South Africa
