James Bevel article

[edit]

Hello, and some comments about your work. There are many more books and articles which can be used as sources for Bevel's achievements in the Civil Rights Movement. Many are listed in the 1989 David Garrow book We Shall Overcome Volume II in the chapter/article "James L. Bevel: The Strategist of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement" (books and articles which can be used in the bibliography), in Taylor Branch's works (please don't remove the portion of the quote where King says "I think you owe me one" which shows that the projects King and Bevel worked on previously were Bevel's ideas), and, importantly, the 2022 Thomas Ricks book Waging A Good War which has extensive cites and history of Bevel's involvement. As for his 2008 conviction, it was for "unlawful fornication", not incest, the accusations of other daughters was not judged, and Wikipedia due weight would have to show that the placement of the conviction information is a major defining portion of James Bevel notability (arguably it was not, and likely shouldn't be in the opening paragraph. Bevel's notability comes from the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and Anti-Vietnam War actions, not for something he was accused of doing in 1992 or 1993 - his daughter couldn't remember which year - decades after his notable work). Thanks, and will ping Public-historian-90 if there are questions or further clarifications. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:37, 28 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I added back a large removed portion of the Memphis history, you deleted some important information leading up to, and during, King's death. Also, please explain how the conviction is WP:DUE in the first sentence of the article? Bevel is not famous as a "child molester" (not what he was convicted for, and he proclaimed his innocence throughout and was released from jail to await a hearing on his appeal). Thanks.
