Jeffrey Francis-Matthew Smith (born December 17, 1978) better known by his stage name Mstrex, is an American DJ, songwriter, record producer, and CEO of new media company FREE MARKET MUSIC INC. Nephew of former Vice-President of BMI Publishing Cheryl Dickerson, Godson of world renowned Grammy award winning producer and drummer, Narada Michael Walden.

In March of 2010, Mstrex launched his own new media company, FREE MARKET MUSIC INC.[1] (FMM). FMM is a company that offers new media for film, television, video games, music for fashion mobile phone, and all emerging new media.

Early history

[edit]

Originally from San Francisco, California, Mstrex is a fourth generation musician/composer. Mstrex's hyphenated middle name was given to him by his mother Linda Smith as a tribute to his first musical influences, his two uncles Premiere Music's producers Reggie Smith and Barry "Race" Smith (A-1 Yola, 11/5 album), who each share the middle names of Francis and Matthew. Mstrex’s mother also noticed his "prenatal" ability to "keep time" with the music coming from his uncles' band practice and jam sessions, as well as when she listened to tunes on the radio; thus, the placement of the middle initials "F.M", because she said he was "wired for sound before he was born".

As a child Mstrex was immersed into a rich musical culture, ranging from urban jazz, R&B, rock and the classics, under the guidance of his two uncles Reggie Smith Smith and Barry "Race" Smith, who by then were collaborating with various Bay Area legends as Neil Schon and Godfather Narda Michael Walden. Mstrex developed stage presence and acting abilities during his training as a member of the San Francisco Children's Opera Troupe for 3 seasons.

While attending San Francisco's Aptos Middle School along with songwriter Johnny "J. Valentine" Newt, Mstrex participated in the school's Orchestra, playing upright bass and later studying electric bass. Being invited to join Aptos' Jazz Band resulted in winning the 1992 and 1993 competition at the Santa Cruz Jazz Festival.

Mstrex attended Philip and Sala Burton High School and continued to hone his bass playing and keyboard skills under the tutelage of Greg Cole, director of Burton's Touch of Class Choir. Mstrex's musical talent was quickly recognized and at age 16 he performed his first professional gig during the McDonald’s Gospel fest Concert, at Oakland's Paramount Theatre. As part of the TOC Choir, Mstrex later preformed for Sean "Diddy" Combs' “No Way Out” tour at the San Jose Arena and Arco Arena.

After attending Philip and Sala Burton High School, Mstrex enrolled in San Francisco State University's, Recording Engineering Program, under the direction of John Barsotti. In conjunction with attending the university, Mstrex took an internship at world renowned Hyde Street Studios in San Francisco to keen his engineering experience. At Hyde Street Studios, Mstrex was able to expand his knowledge of the music recording process and routine studio operations; all the while setting his sights on the Los Angeles music and recording scene.

Musical career

[edit]

1999-2003

[edit]

Mstrex’s professional career began as head engineer and staff producer for “55 Entertainment,” “Song World” owned by New England Patriot’s former defensive end Willie McGinest, which resulted in working their signed artist Metro. Later on, Mstrex became Producer and Engineer for Bryce Wilson at Czar Entertainment Studios in Burbank in earlier 2000’s. While working at Czars Entertainment he worked as Mýa’s engineer and vocal arranger for her Moodring album. In addition, Mstrex collaborated with Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman, Keyshia Cole, Christina Milian, Lil'Zane, as well as actresses Rosalyn Sanchez (from the movie "RUSH HOUR') and Christina Vidal of "Nickelodeon," as engineer and vocal arranger. Mstrex served a brief stint as sound engineer with “The Underdogs” (production duo consisting Harvey Mason Jr. and Damon Thomas) working on Ruben Studdard’s record “Sorry 2004.”

2003-2007

[edit]

Recognizing an opportunity to venture into the indie music scene, in 2003, Mstrex connected with childhood friend J. Valentine (writer of ‘N Sync’s Celebrity album) to launch CityBoyz Musik. CityBoyz Musik featured the Bay Area’s very own two recording artists’ J. Valentine and Bailey. Produced by Mstrex (formally Major League Bucketz) the record “Go Dumb” by artist J. Valentine and Bailey became the longest No. 1 hit in the bay area.

The music produced by Mstrex with CityBoyz Musik gained rapid radio exposure in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as the club scene throughout California which led to a recurring spot for their song and music video "U C IT"[2] on MTV's Jams. “Late Night” a single written in 2007 by Keri Hilson and J. Valentine, produced by Mstrex is steadily claiming the charts. Shortly after their hit “Go Dumb,” Mstrex’s production work spawned two solo recording deals for CityBoyz Musik artists, J. Valentine and Bailey, with Sony/BMG's Clive Davis at J Records. Shortly after CityBoyz Artist signed their J Records deal, the company disbanded.

2008-2009

[edit]

In mid-2008, moving to Atlanta, Georgia was a decision Mstrex made in order to be closer to the "mix" where he has since joined forces with Anthony Dent, (producer of Destiny's Child song "Survivor").

Despite Mstrex’s achievements, Mstrex continued to "fine-tune" his production and composition skills, thereby realizing a childhood aspiration to compose film scores. Because of his classical piano training, Mstrex felt this was a natural progression to expand from music production into film scoring. In 2008, Mstrex entered and won “The 2008 Indie Gathering Film Score Competition”[3] held in Cleveland, Ohio, networking with industry insiders such as John Woo (film director of “Red Cliff”) who help to jump-start his film scoring career.

2009-present

[edit]

Following the demise of CityBoyz Musik, Mstrex gave interest of EMI songwriter Harold Lilly Jr. (songwriter for Beyoncé Knowles, 2009 "Ego" record) He and Lilly went on a writing frenzy at EMI Studios in the course of 2009, resulting in a record placement for song “Girl on the Way” on J Records’ artist CJ for his coming album.

In March of 2010, Mstrex launched his own new media company, FREE MARKET MUSIC INC.[1] (FMM). FMM is a company that offers new media for film, television, video games, music for fashion, mobile phone, and all emerging new media.

Mstrex is working on Asher Roth’s new project. Placing scores for the show CSI Miami and collaborating with other local film directors. Furthermore, Mstrex is working on his 2011 Album, Generation: Planet X.

In early October 2010, Mstrex was a featured DJ and Performer for bay area Fashion Shows "Rock the Runway"[4] in Oakland, and Haut'e MusiQ: A Night of Fashion & MusiQ for American Red Cross at Club Slide[5] in San Francisco. During the events, FREE MARKET MUSIC INC. debuted their first recording artist Natasha P, with her hit singles written by Mstrex and Natasha P, “Sunrise” (Produced by Mstrex) and “Move On” (Produced by Dead Mau5)

In late 2010, Mstrex registered a new trademark, his self inspired genre “Rock-tronica.”

Speedy deletion nomination of MstrEX

[edit]

A tag has been placed on MstrEX requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for musical topics. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you.
