Algorithms links

Hi Jeff. Just wanted to let you know that I have removed the external links that you added to the Algorithm article. Wikipedia generally discourages editors from adding links related to sites that they personally maintain. Quoting from the Wikipedia external links guidance section on "Links to avoid":

A website that you own or maintain (unless it is the official site of the subject of the article). If it is relevant and informative, mention it as a possible link on the talk page and wait for someone else to include it, or include the information directly in the article.

Jeff Edmonds 05:55, 11 June 2006 (UTC) Hello Allan McInnes, This is Jeff Edmonds. I stumbled upon your "spam" comment before stumbled upon your much warmer note, which I like much better. I have no idea if I am responding the correct way to you. You seemed to have sent an email to my account, but I dont know how to send one back to your account. I am sorry that you were offended by what I added and that you considered it "spam". It was not my intention. I put what I wrote back because it was my first time adding anything and when it disappeared so quickly I thought that I had added it incorrectly and thought that I would try again. I confess I am still a bit confused when I am encouraged to add things and when I need to check with an editor first. I suppose it makes sense for one not to advertise their services. I worked very hard on my course notes and my slides. The notes are about to be published. My motivation is not to get rich but to have people use what I did. I thought that Wikipeida would be happy for access to them. If not, I would be disappointed, but that too would be fine. All the best to you Jeff. I don't recall ever sending you an email. But perhaps you configured your account to send you emails when you have a new message on your talk page. As for the "spam" comment, I must apologize for that. It was perhaps a little strong. But I was somewhat frustrated that I had posted a message on your talk page that I thought explained the situation, and seen as a response only a reposting of the same material from an anon account. You are certainly encouraged to add things. But there are certain things (such as links to personal websites) that are generally considered bad form to add without checking with other editors.

As for your course notes, I have looked at them, and they seem to be quite good. You have taken an interesting approach, and I hope the published version of your notes does well. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what I personally think of your notes. As I mentioned before, posting a link to them on Wikipedia just isn't appropriate - that's not what Wikipedia is for. But I would certainly encourage you to help us improve the Algorithm article. Should some of the material you add to the article be derived from your notes, then adding a reference to those notes would be reasonable. --Allan McInnes (talk) 17:40, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
