February block evader
[edit]I noticed you blocked IP 67.218.251.39 as being used by PCC556, an editor blocked in Oct 2024. Would you be willing to look at a new user Notnow55, a possible sock of PCC556? They make very characteristic edits, often in fashion topics (and sometimes cuisine and technological advancements), directed at removing mention of non-Western European contributions or origins.
There were earlier named accounts before PCC556 making these same edits to the same articles (accounts now abandoned – CAC230; FrenchByop68; and since: Milton77778 [this user explicitly stated "THEY CENSOR ME DIRECTLY and that is why I must create other accounts because they block the previous one
"]; Rex4459); as well as many IP edits, mostly stale (so likely not actionable, I realise):
- 139.47 March 2025
- 139.47 Oct 2024
- 139.47.118.20 single March edit
- 37.29.234.174 May 2025,
- 67.218.253.84 a March IP
which all operate in a similar way.
Along with their common areas of interest, they frequently remove Asian and Eastern European mentions. E.g. these edits: from one of the recent IPs and from Notnow55 – which are also identical. (I can provide more diffs if needed, but this type of edit is so extensive, you could pick nearly any one from these editors and see the theme.) Or, conversely, inserting a European influence: caravel; sombrero; cowboy hat; 1275332057; justacorps.
Something I note in common in their edit summaries is citing a url as a rationale in the ES, without always adding it as a source to the article: 1291772125 1245895111; 1245339778; 1245340418
Not sure if I've hit the right points here – I never seem to quite get the level of detail right: usually either too long-winded and straying from main thrust, or leave out important info; so let me know what else I should add (or remove?!). And if it's preferable for me to open a case at SPI, I will, but I think I read somewhere that it can be better to ask an admin first? I am a little unclear on the when and why rationale for that, tbh, so please forgive me if I'm going about this in the wrong way. AukusRuckus (talk) 15:31, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
- User blocked. This looks pretty ducky enough to me for a block. SPIs are more definitive, but in cases like this, I have no problem blocking for something obvious. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 16:22, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
- Was dropping by to say thank you for your very prompt response: it was like magic! What a relief.
- Just as I'm about leave that note of thanks, I noticed: They're back. (I know we're never going to get 'em all!) 37.29.236.170 at Waistcoat – 1292226005; and Gingham –1292242946. Not sure if anything can be done about this IP and (presumably) their range. I haven't reverted yet; I'll wait a bit to see if they can be blocked, so avoiding the to-and-fro. In any case, thank you so much for your work. AukusRuckus (talk) 03:20, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
- I'm trying to block them as a I see them pop up. It's amusing to say the least. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 13:21, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
Tech News: 2025-22
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- A community-wide discussion about a very delicate issue for the development of Abstract Wikipedia is now open on Meta: where to store the abstract content that will be developed through functions from Wikifunctions and data from Wikidata. The discussion is open until June 12 at Abstract Wikipedia/Location of Abstract Content, and every opinion is welcomed. The decision will be made and communicated after the consultation period by the Foundation.
Updates for editors
- Since last week, on all wikis except the largest 20, people using the mobile visual editor will have additional tools in the menu bar, accessed using the new
+
toolbar button. To start, the new menu will include options to add: citations, hieroglyphs, and code blocks. Deployment to the remaining wikis is scheduled to happen in June. The
#ifexist
parser function will no longer register a link to its target page. This will improve the usefulness of Special:WantedPages, which will eventually only list pages that are the target of an actual red link. This change will happen gradually as the source pages are updated. [1]- This week, the Moderator Tools team will launch a new filter to Recent Changes, starting at Indonesian Wikipedia. This new filter highlights edits that are likely to be reverted. The goal is to help Recent Changes patrollers identify potentially problematic edits. Other wikis will benefit from this filter in the future.
- Upon clicking an empty search bar, logged-out users will see suggestions of articles for further reading. The feature will be available on both desktop and mobile. Readers of Catalan, Hebrew, and Italian Wikipedias and some sister projects will receive the change between May 21 and mid-June. Readers of other wikis will receive the change later. The goal is to encourage users to read the wikis more. Learn more.
- Some users of the Wikipedia Android app can use a new feature for readers, WikiGames, a daily trivia game based on real historical events. The release has started as an A/B test, available to 50% of users in the following languages: English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, and Turkish.
- The Newsletter extension that is available on MediaWiki.org allows the creation of various newsletters for global users. The extension can now publish new issues as section links on an existing page, instead of requiring a new page for each issue. [2]

Updates for technical contributors
- The previously deprecated
ipblocks
views in Wiki Replicas will be removed in the beginning of June. Users are encouraged to query the newblock
andblock_target
views instead. Detailed code updates later this week: MediaWiki
Meetings and events
- Wikidata and Sister Projects is a multi-day online event that will focus on how Wikidata is integrated to Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. The event runs from May 29 – June 1. You can read the Program schedule and register.
