I am a descendant of Thomas Smiley and visited Derry/Londonderry in 2013. It is impossible for him to be buried outside the city walls with honor for two reasons. 1) The Derry City Cemetery where he is allegedly buried was started in the 1800s. I spoke with the archivist there. 2) During the Siege of Derry, the Williamites lived within the city walls. They were prisoners basically of those walls. They reverted to eating rats and dogs and living in very harsh conditions. If anybody was killed during the siege, it would literally be impossible to leave the city walls and bury someone outside. The only possibility is that he was buried within the walls in the St. Columb's Cathedral, where there is a cemetery. I also visited the church and they pulled records but could find nothing. Most likely, Smiley was buried there but because of the war and the times, no official record made. There is a monument to those who died in the church's cemetery on top of what is believed to be mass grave.
