Untagged image

[edit]

An image you uploaded, Image:PUCSP-coat-of-arms.png, was tagged with the {{coatofarms}} copyright tag. This tag was deleted because it does not actually specify the copyright status of the image. The image may need a more accurate copyright tag, or it may need to be deleted. If the image portrays a seal or emblem, it should be tagged as {{seal}}. If you have any questions, ask them at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. -- 12:42, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Heretic screenshots

[edit]

It looks like they were taken with a very high gamma setting, and so look rather washed out. Could you please re-take these shots with gamma correction off?--Drat (Talk) 04:47, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tell me about it. The monitor on my older computer is somewhat dark, AND I have an old Nvidia in it. Games like Quake are quite murky, without the use of that idgamma program.--Drat (Talk) 13:32, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. My newer computer has an LCD, and it's much better in terms of brightness. By the way, it looks like those screenshots were taken with a source port. Could you list which port this is on the info pages, as it isn't quite representative of how the original games looks. Does the source port allow taking of screenshots with all graphical enhanements off, and at the original resolution?--Drat (Talk) 13:46, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Pucsp-coat-of-arms.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Carrão article is about Vila Carrão, not the district

[edit]

Hello Fabio, the article Vila Carrão was about the traditional borough ("bairro"), which has a 100+ year history; not about the district ("distrito"), which is a recent artificial administrative division and which may change again in the future. The latter should have a separate (short) article, listing "Vila Carrão" as the core of the district. I will ask for the move to be undone. All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 03:32, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that (1) the "bairros", even though they presently have no *administrative* structure, are recognized in official publictions, and are still used in bus routes, maps, and such; (2) there is no rule that Wikipedia articles should refer only to currently existing administrative units. On the contrary, there are many articles about regions and places (such as Harlem and Rive Gauche that were never administrative units as such. (3) The article is all about the Vila Carrão borough, which is only 1/3 or less of the area of the district. (4) Just because there is yet no article on, say, Vila Santa Isabel, that is not reason to forbid an article on Vila Carrão. (5) In the distant future when Wikipedia is finished (just joking 8-) there *will* be an article on every thing that anyone can care enough about to write an article on (with pardon for the dangling participles) --- not just city boroughs, but also streets, buildings, and so on. All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 16:13, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS. I should add that many of the sources that I found on the net are also strictly about the borough and not about the district. This IMHO is an argument for the cultural and historic unity of the former and the artificial nature of the later. Finally, if this is worth anything: in my own experience as a native and former resident, the borough was socially separated from its neighbors by geographic barriers (the creek on the West side, the Avenida on the north, etc.) and by closeness to social/commercial centers such as churches, drugstores, schools, etc.. It is not feasible nor desirable to write a singe article on the history and social networking of 4--5 boroughs that had little in common for most of the last 100 years. All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 16:28, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fabio, I see that you have pasted the contents of Vila Carrão into the Carrão (São Paulo) article. This does not seem to be a good idea, since, as I said above, the Vila Carrão article only covers the history of about 1/3 of the District. The churches of Vila Santa Isabel and Vila Formosa, for example, were bigger and nicer than Vila Carrão's; but nothing is said in the article about them. The Aricanduva borough too had many notable items (such as a large high school) which are also missing. Moreover, the Vila Carrão article contains much detail that is not appropriate for an article on the whole district. On the other hand, the list of boroughs that are covered by the district comes from an official page (I will try to find it again); so that list should be retained in the District article. All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 04:08, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Countries receiving snowfall

[edit]

Where does File:Countries receiving snowfall.png come from (any hint is welcome) ? This map is great, especially for the article snow. It was deleted from there because of lacking source. Thanks. Materialscientist (talk) 04:05, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Using only Unix-like as family is standard across the OS articles. "Subfamilies" are not supposed to be added. If they were, the subfamily would be Linux, not Debian, which would be a sub-subfamily. Using Wikipedia in images is discouraged. Please read and follow any notes in the articles. Please review the change history. I did not change the image the second time. Yworo (talk) 03:05, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You might want to read the article Unix-like, which interestingly enough is a standard term used to refer to operating systems which are like Unix but not officially forms of Unix. Yworo (talk) 03:21, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
