Question from Waseembali777 (15:16, 24 April 2025)
[edit]Hello i need some guidance. Can we add a photo having "Watermark" of any town or village from a credible source? --Waseembali777 (talk) 15:16, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Waseembali777 hi! Generally, photos need to be freely licensed per WP:IUPC. Given this, watermarks are strongly discouraged. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:05, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

Question from 82alex22 on Aleister Crowley (22:48, 26 April 2025)
[edit]Hello. On Aleister Crowley's page, about his influence on pop, I would like to point out that one of the greatest singers in Brazil, Raul Seixas, mentioned him in one of his hits, "Sociedade Alternativa", in addition to other references throughout almost all of his work. It was Raul Seixas who popularized rock in Brazil, and for that reason... I am sure it is fair to mention this great artist, for his importance, originality (for mixing rock with typically Brazilian rhythms), for the quality of his lyrics (many in partnership with the important mystical and fictional writer Paulo Coelho), in order to give visibility to musical production in other languages. Any song in a language other than English is automatically unfeasible - the point is that the voice in music <is an instrument>, and each language <is a different instrument>, so the most important thing in music should not be immediate comprehension - which can be resolved later by reading a translation - but <the melody of the language itself>.
The only problem — since I'm sure Raul should have been mentioned — is that... I can't edit! So if you could check out the artist's work, see it for yourself, and correct this injustice, I'd be grateful. Obrigado for your attention. --82alex22 (talk) 22:48, 26 April 2025 (UTC)
- @82alex22 I'm not sure why you can't make this edit, as the page doesn't appear to be protected. However, you can make an edit request on the article's talk page. Elli (talk | contribs) 17:03, 30 April 2025 (UTC)
WikiCup 2025 May newsletter
[edit]The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.
Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:
BeanieFan11 (submissions) with 1,233 round points from 24 good articles, 28 Did you know articles, and one In the news nomination, mainly about athletes and politicians
Thebiguglyalien (submissions) with 1,127 round points, almost entirely from two high-multiplier featured articles on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) and Grace Coolidge, in addition to two GAs and two reviews
History6042 (submissions) with 1,088 round points from four featured lists about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
Arconning (submissions) with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews
In addition, we would like to recognize Generalissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.
The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. - @SourceGardener: you'd definitely need more citations to reliable sources to demonstrate the subject meets our notability guideline for musicians. You also should write the article in your own words instead of using a large language model. Elli (talk | contribs) 16:06, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

- These citations are enough? SourceGardener (talk) 06:36, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- @SourceGardener I am not going to review all of those citations, but no, these are generally not the sort of thing you want. cinetown.org appears to be a wiki, so cannot be used as a source. Same with imdb, musicbrainz, etc. You need reliable sources with significant coverage. Two or three sources like that should be enough, but they need to be good. Moved by-election article to draftspace
[edit]I moved the article you created for a possible future by-election to Draft:2025 Battle River—Crowfoot federal by-election; though given how WP:CRYSTAL it all is, I'd think that policy would be that we delete it; but these seems more pragmatic until we hear otherwise. He can't resign until the vote counting is complete - and as far as I understand it, he can't resign until a new Speaker is elected on May 26, as Mary Simon can't call a by-election until notified by the Speaker - who currently doesn't exist. This is why he has only announced his intention to resign - and given what's currently going on in the party, a lot can change in the over 3 weeks until he can resign. If the party begins to remove Pierre Poilievre as leader (which surely is highly possible given the unprecedented magnitude of Poilievre's loss, and the various news reports), Damien Kurek will surely rescind his intention and not submit his resignation. It's also possible in that time, that another MP may instead resign (or who knows ... die), which would change the plan. Of course, these possibilities that I suggest are entirely WP:CRYSTAL - as is this article. Personally, if I were him, I wouldn't be submitting my resignation until after the Charles III makes his speech; would you miss an event that has only happened twice since Canada was created 200+ years ago? Nfitz (talk) 22:53, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nfitz General practice is to make the article as soon as the intent to resign is announced; sometimes this election does get cancelled (for example 2025 New York's 21st congressional district special election), but there's always a valid merge target in those cases. I understand the other side of this, but having an article is more valuable to our readers than not having one, and more in line with how reliable sources treat the subject. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:57, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Reliable sources haven't even begun to discuss this - especially with today's announcements by the PM and the fuss about Charles III. No reliable source claimed he had already resigned, which is what was being added (perhaps after your original edits). Putting suitable text in the other articles such as that for PP, By-elections to the 45th Canadian Parliament is fine though. Or even PP's electoral history article. I think that get's what people need. And yes, now I think about it, a redirect would be appropriate. I'll create one, and remove the SD. Nfitz (talk) 23:24, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- Further thoughts - I'm not sure that foreign example "Cancelled special election for New York's 21st congressional district" is actually correct. My understanding is that an election wasn't called? Ergo it could not be cancelled. I'm not saying the text shouldn't be there. But there's probably a better word than Cancelled (odd that it's spelled correctly, rather than in American-English - or has Wikipedia finally started using spelling based on location/settings). Either way though, we're not Yanks, so we're the last people who should be editing it!
- Another issue is that is that the by-election could not happen if there's another federal election. And as the vote on the King's speech is a confidence vote, then it's entirely possible that the entire thing is moot, with another federal election in July 2025. Given the PM's comments today, we are in 1979 territory - and we all know what happened that time. And if Simon fails to call an election and pulls another King-Byng, then we are in 1926 territory and all bets are off. There's just too much Crystal here - and so much unprecedented stuff has already happened in the last 5 months since the rise of illiberal democracy in, and threats of war and annexation by, the USA. Nfitz (talk) 23:55, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nfitz please stop move-warring about this. I've already reverted your draftification once; I encourage you to self-revert and take the article to AfD. There is no "I really think it shouldn't be an article yet" clause that allows you to repeatedly draftify an article. Elli (talk | contribs) 00:53, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- Sigh - I thought we were done. If you can explain to me why this isn't CRYSTAL, then I'll self-revert - in the same way I self-reverted the SD on the redirect, admitted that your suggestion of redirection to a target was correct, and redirected it! There's so many reasons this may not happen - I'm sure you've seen the reports about the turmoil within the CCP. It's not like there's a written job offer here - this is, at this point, internal politics about a resignation that literally couldn't occur for weeks, and a by-election that may not occur until 2026 (though the PM has committed to the unusual act of asking Simon to call it quickly - but will really happen if they start the devil's face ads again?). It's completely CRYSTAL. I'm open to arguments though; which riding has had the article created so early before? I'd sooner not start an AFD process on something that's so clearly cut-and-dried. Also, can you please G7 Template:2025 Canadian federal by-elections/Battle River—Crowfoot. Nfitz (talk) 01:25, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nfitz I've already given you an explanation: numerous reliable sources have reported on the election. And no, I can't G7 that as I did not create it. Move the article back to mainspace, nominate it for deletion, then we can debate this in full. Elli (talk | contribs) 01:41, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- Ah sorry, I thought you had created it. By debate, you mean start a multi-week long AFD process - or longer given how poor AFD participation is these days. No. And no you haven't explained it. You've pointed to a foreign example in a failing democracy where someone was given a written job offer that was later rescinded. This is nothing like that. Nothing has been promised. RS are clear that an intention to resign a month from now was given. How is this different than when P.E. Trudeau rescinded his resignation when he was opposition leader? Please address my points - or at least give examples of a similar riding and comparison to Trudeau's resignation. Nfitz (talk) 02:02, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- When you first created the article, you falsely wrote that he HAD resigned, and a by-election will BE held. You know this was wrong. Why you are trying to die on this hill I don't know. You are now trying to justify the existence of a very clearly CRYSTAL article that you created with a different understanding of what had happened. If your original understanding was correct, then the article would have made sense. But how could it have been correct? How could have have already resigned? That raises concerns of understanding of basic civics and how the government works. I'd suggest you stay out of editing in such areas. Nfitz (talk) 02:07, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nfitz again, you don't get to avoid Wikipedia's processes just because you personally would rather they not apply. I'm happy to explain my rationale in more detail... at AfD. Not here. Your actions here have been in violation of WP:DRAFTOBJECT, and as you have been unwilling to self-revert, I am reverting you here again. Please just take the page to AfD. Elli (talk | contribs) 02:20, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, interesting. I wish we wouldn't keep changing the "rules". The number of times that I've seen editors do that. But at the same time, you very clearly violated the bit about not doing original research, by posting things that simply weren't documented in your source - well I exaggerate it - you clearly misunderstood the G&M article you used. And then refused to back down after it was pointed out that you don't understand how it's working.
- I think you reverting this is the wrong action. Yes, I shouldn't have reverted based on these new rules ... BUT YOU KNOW! This is called Disrupting Wikipedia to make a point. And you should know that this is very CRYSTAL. I've made very clear that I'm open to discussion, and that I will (and have) changed my edits based on discussion. There was WP:NORUSH here, and I feel we could have worked through this (at least before you became condescending - while editing in a field you don't seem to understand well). What would have been best is for you to explain why you don't think this is CRYSTAL by using policy and/or relevant examples. I've cited many issues now, and you haven't challenged one of them. While I've pointed out all the reasons that your sole (foreign!) example is not relevant. You are showing both WP:OWNERSHIP and WP:BATTLEGROUND behaviour here. Also, the use of the phrase "you don't get to avoid Wikipedia's processes" sounds a bit uncivil and condescending to me. Please read WP:CIVIL. This is really not the behaviour I expect from a fellow Canadian on such wonkish subject matter. And really - you get to say that I don't get to avoid Wikipedia's processes? Wikipedia's process is to talk things out, and avoid drama. And you've tossed out the CRYSTAL policy and taken your own executive action WHILE I'm trying to discuss this. Even your first comment "general practice is to make the article as soon as the intent to resign is announced". No, we don't. We put a mention in existing articles that person X has decided to do Y rather than creating an article on the new sports team he has promised to create. Would we have created an article when Trudeau promised to resign after his electoral loss? Of course not.
- I'm not in favour of starting unnecessary processes. Can you please apologize and explain to me why this isn't CRYSTAL, so that I don't start what (who knows ...) may be an unnecessary AFD. Let's start this again. Nfitz (talk) 02:49, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nfitz I've already explained my thinking to you and I'm not interested in discussing this further here. If you take this to AfD, I will elaborate on my reasoning. Getting a clearer consensus on how to deal with this type of situation will be an improvement regardless of how that discussion goes. Elli (talk | contribs) 02:53, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- An unnecessary AFD is disruptive to Wikipedia. Why do want to interrupt Wikipedia to make a point? Have I understood your point - no. Have you tried to make it - maybe, but I can't see it. Why would you want me to create an AFD just so you can point out why we don't need an AFD, rather than following Wikipedia policy and discussing this in Talk first. Please explain what your point is. Nfitz (talk) 02:59, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nfitz given that the two of us evidently disagree on whether this page should exist, I do not view such an AfD as "unnecessary" at all. I've already given you an explanation and I am sorry that you do not find it satisfying. Elli (talk | contribs) 03:02, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- Yes we disagree currently. But when 2 people disagree about something, they talk about it, and normally come to agreement. Which is why you seldom see lawyers and judges disagreeing with each other - because they all understand how the law works (or at least come to an understanding).
- WP:AFD requires that before starting an AFD that one applies WP:BEFORE one should consider alternatives to deletion (WP:ATD). ATD notes that "content issues should be discussed at the relevant talk page, and other methods of dispute resolution should be used first, such as listing on Wikipedia:Requests for comments for further input". We aren't talking about notability or something, that could more quickly lead to a disagreement and head to AFD. Absolutely, if a by-election happens, it will be notable. But it does not need to be split off the main article By-elections to the 45th Canadian Parliament until CRYSTAL is no longer a significant issue. (what's the RUSH?). At least that's what I think.
- You have told me that you think the article should remain, even after it was clear that your initial understanding about when the resignation had (will) occur was wrong.
- And you have told me that you have told me why, but I can't see this. I have asked you to explain, but you told me that you have a further explanation, but you won't tell me unless I start an AFD.
- Is my understanding of all this correct?
- Can you at least simply cut-and-paste what the explanation you've already given? Nfitz (talk) 03:31, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- (sorry for all the WP links - I thought you were new here, and didn't understand some of this stuff like Crystal - but I'm just reading otherwise. Which perplexes me even more why you won't point out to me what I clearly must have missed). Nfitz (talk) 03:46, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Nfitz we have differing interpretations of WP:CRYSTAL. I will elaborate on my interpretation: Point 1 is the only part of CRYSTAL this could fall under (the others clearly do not apply). However, preparation for the event is already in progress, and there is already well-documented speculation about the event (as can be demonstrated by ample media coverage. There is plenty that can be said about this election already, and even if it is cancelled (worth noting that no media outlets are hedging like this), there will be plenty more to say about it. Hopefully this makes my views more clear. Elli (talk | contribs) 04:10, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- Yes thank-you. That makes it more clear where you disagree. And I think you make a very good case of why putting the information in the main article isn't Crystal. I'm not sure I'd expect the media to say much at the moment - the entire industry lost a night's sleep this week, and this isn't even the 2nd most significant political occurrence today. If one of the papers is on to something then it would drop on the door step overnight, and on a 6 AM or 7 AM release on their website. (for some reason lately my paper arrives at around 3 AM - about when I go to bed ... occasionally leaving an odd period of time where I can see the breaking news, that can't be found on the Internet). They've got days to play this out. I digress ...
- What preparations are in progress? The returning officer is already in place. Elections Canada can even recycle the polling maps and even the election workers. Parties would probably stick with the same candidates, and not do nominations - or else the party leader would just appoint someone to run (it's not like the result is in doubt - possibly the safest seat in North America!). They are already weeks ahead of where they normally are - and can't do a thing officially until May 26 (in which case election day is July 7 if the PM keeps his promise to the opposition). If they wait until May 30 to resign, election day is still July 7. But we already know that Parliament isn't scheduled to sit from June 20 to September 15. Surely the CPC will game this so there's something like a September 8th vote, so they can get media coverage they won't get in July/August, and have momentum going into the fall session, when PP can finally appear at Question Period, and try to trigger a new election. I'm sure there's backroom discussion and plotting going on ... of course none of this is mentionable in main space, as it's entirely speculative/OR/Crystal. (though I guess the polling stations might be challenging given how many are in schools).
- What I'm not sure is if a stand-alone article is kocher (or even necessary) at this time. WP:PAGEDECIDE tells us that Sometimes, when information about a future event is scarce, coverage may instead be better suited to a larger encompassing article (and perhaps that should be 45th Canadian Parliament or it's (also premature but almost inevitable) sub-page By-elections to the 45th Canadian Parliament).
- Perhaps the root cause to all this is that Wikipedia is not News. With the 24-hour news cycle, we are all to quick to document something that would only be a footnote in history. We are quick to delete or more often draftify an article for a sport-season that's created a couple of months early, because there's no content. Perhaps we should have a rule that nothing ever gets created until 24-hours after it became notable.
- Anyhow - you've made me think. Deletion is certainly not the answer. It's a redirect or merge at this stage - and an RfD later if this falls through. And I've always argued that's not something for AfD - that's a content discussion. Though perhaps Draft is the best place, and as such AfD is the only remaining option (unless you change your mind - which I don't think will happen).
- I'll sleep on it - and see what the morning papers have to say about all this. And ponder the interaction between WP:N and WP:CRYSTAL (which really is like trying to stick a square piece into a round hole). Thanks, Nfitz (talk) 05:24, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
- I'm keeping an eye on this still. PP finally conceded the other by-election once the counting was complete, 3 or 4 days ago. But the election counting continues, with another riding flipping today, and only 2 seats short of a majority. Will the CPC really keep PP around for 4.5 years if it becomes a majority? Nfitz (talk) 00:38, 11 May 2025 (UTC)

- Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in May 2025 to reduce the backlog of articles in the new pages feed. Sign up here to participate!

Question from Missalex420 (09:49, 14 May 2025)
[edit]Hi mentor!
I had a question about finding citation links that are broken/not available anymore & what is the correct way to deal with those. I know adding a new working link or (if you can’t find a working link to the previous citation) finding a new citation with the same kind of info is the best option. But if you don’t have the time to search for a new link right then, should you delete the broken one or mark it in some way? Maybe mark it with a cross-through line to show it’s broken?
Thank you!! --Missalex420 (talk) 09:49, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Missalex420 hi! First, you can search for it on web.archive.org; most broken links will have a working archive there. If that doesn't work, though, you can put {{dead link}} after the citation; this is generally preferable to removal if you can't find a replacement. Elli (talk | contribs) 14:53, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
