Bert Hardy

[edit]

Hi @I dream of horses:, thank you for your edits on Bert Hardy — discussion of urchins pic makes much more sense now! I was surprised to find no entry on Thurston Hopkins so I've added one, but you may be able to add further information there too. Great to have someone else interested in Picture Post on board. Cheers, Jamesmcardle(talk) 23:14, 8 November 2018 (UTC) Dear Ms. McArdle: I'd much earlier added info when the Bert Hardy wiki bio was very new to the site. The basis for my edits today are my personal interviews with Bert and his wife, Sheila, at their farmstead in Surrey, UK, & his autobiography, My Life, which I own a copy of along with many other books relating to Bert, his Korean War mate, James Cameron, & the Picture Post mag. When I interviewed Bert in Nov. 1981, my best photo-portrait of him with his dogs, Lizzie & Kim, was later printed by his own commercial darkroom & donated by me to the British National Portrait Gallery, where it's been part of the photographs collection there from 2003-present(2018). In addition, I've authored & published several books on Bert Hardy, James Cameron, & Picture Post, all ground-breaking works, well-research & well-written. I haven't studied Thurston Hopkins career nearly as thoroughly as the others, but have learned a few things about him over the years too. Thank you for your comments.--From David Joseph Marcou. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.89.116.179 (talk) 23:22, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your prompt reply @I dream of horses:. It lends much more authority to WP articles to have someone who has actually met the subject. I've chased up your shot at the NPG; he looks very personable, an impression that the addition of his adoring dogs confirms. I'll chase up a copy of your Crucial Collaborations: Contexts, Departures, Arrivals in the First Un-Fought War (Korea) via the Courageous Coverages and Shining Deeds of Picture Post's Bert Hardy and James Cameron, and Some Superb UN Troops and will read it with interest. Regards, James Jamesmcardle(talk) 23:52, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Mr. McArdle. My Picture Post-related books include: All the Best (my complete history of PP, 1st of its kind about PP); The Cockney Eye (my bio about Bert Hardy); James Cameron's World (my bio about James Cameron); & Crucial Collaborations (my dual bio about BH & JC, based on my research for my individual bios about them).--From David Joseph Marcou.

@I dream of horses: I've added Crucial Collaborations to the references in the article. Best, James Jamesmcardle(talk) 00:03, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you again, Mr. McArdle. Now if someone permitted by Wikipedia will write & publish a Wiki Bio that will be permanently posted on Wiki about my own career, it will be appreciated. Ca. 10 years ago, an article about me was submitted that Wiki editors said didn't include enough notability for a Wiki bio; I've since authored & published another 100+ of my own books, with so far 162 books authored & published by me totally & counting. I've done several books (texts & photos) on celebrities I've covered, & my works (books, plays, articles, poems, bios, memoirs, histories, etc.) have been widely praised. Thank you.--David Joseph Marcou.

David @I dream of horses:, I shall certainly give that my consideration. Though a little busy right now I will keep in touch. I cannot find you on Researchgate or on Academia, though I have 'friended' you on the British Photography site. Only your [1] appears in the Australian National Library. Can you give me more information about your publishers please? Cheers, JamesJamesmcardle(talk) 00:38, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. McArdle: I forgot to include 1 of the many dedicated web-pages for my works around the world. It includes the PDF's to my Spirit of America book-series so far, 77 volumes of SA so far. That University of Missouri J-School Library web-page is at: libraryguides.missouri.edu/davidmarcou --

Mr. McArdle: I've authored & published all 162 of my books & counting via self-publication; DigiCOPY is given publishing credit for many of my recent books; they are my designers, printers, & binders. I have worked with many generous sponsors; the big book publishers have shied from publishing my books for me. Don't know why exactly, because my articles & photos have been published by leading magazines & newspapers globally for many years. My works are always well-researched, well-written, & well-photographed (esp. when the photos were taken by me). Since it seems you have ready access to British sources, you might check my articles, reviews, & photos very sporadically in RPS Journal, British Journal of Photography, & British Heritage mag, from 1990-2015. If you know where to look, you'll find works by me published in Smithsonian mag, the online NYT, & many articles/reviews for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, too, etc. I'm glad you friended me on the British Photo History site; I'll check into your contact with me there as soon as I can. Also, I'm related by his marriage for many years to my 1st cousin, Mary Ann Marcou McArdle, to Mike McArdle, of western WI. Just thought I'd better throw that in. One of their daughters directs the La Crosse County Library System, I believe.--David Joseph Marcou.

Hi again David @I dream of horses:, I think lets start with a set of references to your articles in Smithsonian mag, the online NYT, & Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, because the notability issue may relate to self-published works especially in the case of books (see specifically https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:BKTS&redirect=no). Might I ask please if you could save me a bit of time by sending a set of formatted references to those articles and links if they have them, to check them? Interesting to learn of our distant relationship via the McArdle clan (and also to note that we were born only 3 days over a month apart)...there are many here in Castlemaine where I live, though I am directly related to none of them. My grandfather came from Scotland, though I think it is actually an Irish name. Jamesmcardle(talk) 03:24, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. McArdle: My ancestry includes my Irish-American paternal grandmother, Agnes Mary Fitzgerald Marcou, and my French Canadian paternal grandfather, David Ambrose Marcou Sr., the latter of whose direct ancestors, according to legitimate archival sources, include the famed Canadian explorer Louis Joliet. My mother's ancestry is Swiss-Austrian & German, with the surnames Muskat & Brunner.

A partial list of entries from my CV may be helpful (see farther below; the very bottom entry much father below is for the 6 photos I took in 1981 Hannibal for Missouri Life's picture-story, with 1 of my Hannibal photos being selected in 2013 I believe among the top 40 photos in ML's history), but the Smithsonian mag citations (among my citations in the catalogue of the British Library ((incl. also ca. 2 dozen of my books there, with my books generally being included in prestigious libraries around the world, some of which are cited on WorldCat)) are: "Operatic Entrance", by David Joseph Marcou, Smithsonian Magazine, March 2007, pp. 16-18 (picture-story about Bert Hardy's taking 15 active group photos fused in darkroom into 1 overall active still-montage, including Queen Elizabeth II's entry within that scene, Paris Opera, May 1957); & "Gaga Over a Gargoyle", by David Joseph Marcou, Smithsonian Magazine, February 2008, pp. 10-12 (picture-story about John Loengard's taking a gripping photo for NYTimes of Annie Leibovitz as AL works on 61st floor eagle gargoyle taking photos of dancer David Parsons). I was compensated very well monetarily by Smithsonian mag for both picture-stories.

Included in my online NYTimes citations are 8 presidential campaign photos 2000-2008 (I believe more photos by me than by any other single creative contributor to this massive online reader's gallery) taken by me for that publication's "Documenting the Decade" Readers' Gallery of Dec. 2009, individual links of which can be found near the bottom of the following sub-link on my Missouri Journalism School Library web-page: http://libraryguides.missouri.edu/c.php?g=792244&p=5682287

My Milwaukee Journal Sentinel articles include 60-to-65 credited articles by me from 1991-2006 & ca.75-80 uncredited news-brief articles by me during that same span (I was that paper's main La Crosse-area freelance correspondent during that period). I was compensated monetarily for all these articles.

Mr. McArdle: The web-link here is from the UW-Madison Alumni website. This bio began many years ago as a rejected Wiki bio submission written by someone else, but I kept adding to & deleting from its core, to build up a very respectable bio, that is also very accurate. It is detail-intense, but I hope it helps in the creation of an accepted Wiki bio about me soon.-- https://www.uwalumni.com/alumninote/david-marcou/ --

Hi David @I dream of horses:, remembering that WP is an encyclopaedia, if I am to assist, it really would help to have just the articles please, correctly and consistently referenced with page numbers, publisher details, date published, ISSN, like this; (preceded by 2 curly brackets) Citation | author1=Holland, Alison | author2=Henson, Bill | title=Bill Henson | journal=Photofile | publication-date=2017 | volume=100 | pages=24-41 | issn=0811-0859 (followed 2 curly brackets), so that it will look like this:

Holland, Alison; Henson, Bill (2017), "Bill Henson", Photofile, 100: 24–41, ISSN 0811-0859
Choose only the most significant articles please, then we can start. Thanks Jamesmcardle(talk) 02:32, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi David @I dream of horses:, I can trace the following articles but only up to 2008. Only one appears in a peer-reviewed journal, Journalism Quarterly. Can you check the rest please. I have noted REVIEW-CHECK next to those that appear to be reviews of your books which will be handy...can you work out which of your books that would be in each case? I can't other articles; should there be more? Have you any in other peer-reviewed journals?

James: I have not used a user-name or a password on wikipedia for so long, I no longer remember them. I'm not sure why this whole recent inquiry got started here, but I am interested only in being covered in a bio by wikipedia, if I don't have to jump thru 10,000 hoops. My record of publishing does not include I'd guess a ton of peer-reviewed publications, but neither did Shakespeare's, yet his works are accepted tons of places, including most universities. And almost all of my newspaper & mag publications are legit, many via top outlets. None of my nearly 400 book-titles published so far & counting have been published by paying publishers, but I do get sponsorship monies at times, which I believe was the main form of aids book-authors received before 1800. Some academics don't want to have much positively to do with my books (as well-done as most of my books are) simply b/c Doubleday, St. Martin's Press, Thames-Hudson, or Taschen aren't directly sponsoring my books. If you've anything positive to relate to me now, please do; otherwise, I don't know why we should continue this conversation.--DvJosRbtMarcou. 2600:6C44:701B:300:1002:6052:6054:9327 (talk) 09:31, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(moved to right place) Hi David, you came to my attention with your edit as an IP to Seán O'Casey, which is on my watchlist, so I dug further in to your edit history. See my notice at your current IP's talk page; I guess you've never been told that adding citations to your own work or editing about yourself is not on; it's against our conflict of interest guideline (also see a nutshell version of it). Therefore, unfortunately I've had to remove most mentions of you in articles here. Also re this account: I assume you found out about my message here due to an email notification. If that's the case, you can reset your password; see Help:Reset password for more information about that. Graham87 (talk) 09:58, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Anbody who sends a person like me--who actually has been fairly accomplished not only at research, but at writing, photography, editing, & publishing--on Easter Sunday, ought to be tied up & left in a closet a long time. Your wiki rules are disastrous to decent, accurate, prolific production by creators like me. It's "good to know" that freedom of expression for creators like me is being squashed at very opportunity, even on Easter Sunday by intellectual tyrants like you, Mr. James... 2600:6C44:701B:300:1002:6052:6054:9327 (talk) 12:24, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Mr. McArdle: Your rules are so antiquated & inbred as to be ridiculous. It appears you removed my citation near the end of the Sean O'Casey entry for my sequel to an O'Casey classic; likely you removed the other citations too that you had informed me about. It was a thoroughly legit 2 different productions my group & I did in 2008 of my sequel to O'Casey's masterpiece "Juno & the Paycock" that triggered this, you said. Not only were both productions well-received by our audiences, but the National Theatre of Ireland (the Abbey) positively critiqued my script in 2010, & I made the changes the Abbey suggested & published that version in 1 or 2 collections of my plays, both held by the La Crosse Public Library. I am a very prolific author, even having a decent claim at present to being the US's most prolific living book author-photographer (in terms of number of titles, not numbers of sales). Also, preservationists who discount self-published books &/or self-referencing authors don't have a good sense of what has made the publishing trades so vital for centuries. Only in the last couple centuries have paid contracts become fairly regular for many authors. I feel bad that there are intellectual tyrants such as whoever you represent that don't allow any freedom to authors unless they are published by the "big-shots". You & yours really should be ashamed of yourselves; you might as well be called bloody censors, book-banners, & book-burners as well. You take a whole lot of vitality out of the book-authoring & book-publishing enterprises.--DvJRMarcou. 2600:6C44:701B:300:1002:6052:6054:9327 (talk) 18:41, 23 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You're entitled to your opinion, but let's get one thing straight: I am not Jamesmcardle. Graham87 (talk) 03:22, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Graham87 (talk): Regardless, 2 bios written about me ca. 15 years ago for inclusion on wikipedia, were both turned down by wiki due to "lack of notability", I believe, a dubious criticism by wiki even then. I have since established so much notability regarding not only my subjects but regarding my self too, gen. positive, as to make wikipedia look very bad if something good isn't done via wiki soon to include works by/about me decently. I only began posting endnote-type materials on wiki back then, b/c it seemed, after a while, the only way wiki would recognize positively any works by/about me. I have works by/about me included in many top libraries & archives in the US & overseas, & have had my works in photo-shows in many good places including many US sites & 2 shows in Seoul, Korea, plus 2 of my best 2008 presidential campaign photos (Barack Obama & Mike Huckabee) were on-display 4 months in 2011-2012 at Smithsonian's Nat. Msm. of Amer. Hist. Archives Center. I've a decent claim to being at present the US's most prolific living book author-photographer, with 305+ volumes of my Spirit of America book-series & counting, & 390 book-titles overall so far & counting. If you do anything to aid me in this regard with wiki, I'd appreciate some decent help from you, b/c I doubt I'm as computer-proficient as you, tho some things I can do decently via pc. Thank you.--From David Joseph Robert Marcou. 2600:6C44:701B:300:1002:6052:6054:9327 (talk) 08:21, 24 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
