JVP funding breakdown

[edit]

It is generally poor practice to use first party sourcing for things like this, do you have access to a secondary source or a reliable source for the funding breakdown? I'm not too familiar but it looks like the original Part VIII of the Form 990 might have that breakdown if it could be disclosed somewhere. MasterTriangle12 (talk) 19:32, 31 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I really appreciate your feedback, thank you for taking the time!
Unfortunately, individual contributions and foundation grants are lumped together in the IRS Form 990s, and contributors are not listed, so while the 990 is a great source on funding, it doesn't break it down further.
This Chronicle of Philanthropy article from May of 2024 mentions some similar numbers from last year, quoting their director of development: "In a typical year, around 85 percent of the organization’s roughly $4 million budget comes from individual donors whose average-sized contribution is $60, with the remainder coming from philanthropic groups, says Solomon." https://www.philanthropy.com/article/whos-really-funding-campus-protests
As Chronicle of Philanthropy is a very reputable media outlet focusing on nonprofits, would this article combined with the organization's public annual report be sufficient for the funding breakdown, in addition to the ProPublica 990 link already provided? Or do you feel the annual report should be removed as a source entirely?
Thanks again, your advice has been super helpful! CaminoResearcher1 (talk) 15:54, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's a good relevant secondary. I thought 990 did at least separate out membership dues? That would leave a lot still lumped in though. MasterTriangle12 (talk) 19:02, 1 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "CaminoResearcher1", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because you need something like initials. 1 isn't enough to make it a personal account.. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you. Secretlondon (talk) 11:21, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'll try and explain this better than the template. You cannot call yourself CaminoResearch but you can call yourself FredatCaminoResearch. '1' doesn't seem specific enough as it could be shared, it could just be the first account from that agency. You don't have to share your real name, or anything like that, but it needs to show it's a personal account not a corporate one. The bit of the username policy I'm talking about is Wikipedia:ISU. Does this make sense? Thanks Secretlondon (talk) 11:28, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Secretlondon,
The account is not shared with any other individual, and while the company I work for is Camino (which is disclosed per Wikipedia's guidelines), the company does not own this account, have access to it, nor is there is a title/position/role of "Researcher," so the account is not transferable to other people. In retrospect, I can see how "Researcher" could be misinterpreted as a job title in this case. I can request a change of username so it's clearer. Thank you.
