2025 Update from Women in Green

[edit]

Hello Cielquiparle:

2024 has wrapped up, and what a full year it was for WikiProject Women in Green! Over the past year, we hosted two edit-a-thons, one themed around women's history and another on women around the world. We also managed to achieve most of our 2024 annual goals, nominating 75 articles for GA, reviewing 64 GA nominations, nominating 8 articles for FAC, peer reviewing 3 articles and reviewing 10 FAC nominations. Excellent work, and thank you to everyone involved!

For 2025 we have a new set of goals for nominations and reviews. In particular, we would like to see more articles on our Hot 100 list being improved and nominated for GA this year. If you take a look at the list and see an article you are interested in contributing to, feel free to add it and yourself to our Hot 100 project discussion. You might even find someone interested in collaborating with you!

This year, as with every year, we hope you will join us in helping improve our coverage of women and women's works on this encyclopedia. Every contribution helps. We'll see you around!

AfD closure

[edit]

There were two articles nominated at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/1874 Waitemata by-elections, but you have closed just one of them. Could you go back, please, and deal with the other one as well? Thanks! Schwede66 18:41, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nkiru Olumide-Ojo moved to draftspace

[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to Nkiru Olumide-Ojo. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nkiru Olumide-Ojo was closed with this outcome. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit for review" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. Owen× 14:39, 25 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question on the DYK. If we were to go with your Alt, would it perhaps be better if it mentioned the name of her husband in the hook? Inasmuch as some people may recognize it, and find that of interest. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D0B5:8C19:A145:4667 (talk) 02:30, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

She has the same surname as her husband. That seems like enough of a clue. The art of DYK is to not "tell" too much in the hook – otherwise there is no mystery. It needs to be a compelling question that makes people want to read more about the article in bold. The more you add to the hook – including blue links to other articles – the less likely people are to read the main article. Have a look at the statistics page to see how well / poorly various hooks perform. In this particular case, it actually helps you if people wonder, "Wait. Is that the wife of Elie? I need to check." Cielquiparle (talk) 04:17, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting.Yes, I have no idea whether more people would be interested in it - because they say "Elie Wiesel, sounds familiar but I can't place him - or fewer, because they don't make the connection. Would more in that second example click in if Mao's name were not linked? I really don't know - it would be conjecture. Thanks. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:4EE:A2EA:A241:1EDE (talk) 16:02, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I just leave it up to the promoter to decide. Also, anyone could have commented and suggested tweaking the hook. But no one did. Cielquiparle (talk) 21:13, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Lois Riess DYK Normination

[edit]

Hey Trust you are doing just fine @Cielquiparle, I’ve got to push back on your take here Lois Riess . You’re coming off like the entire article is some shaky mess, riddled with faults and bad info, but let’s zero in on that point you made about the guilty plea—specifically footnote 19. You implied it was flimsy or unsupported, but there’s a citation right there citation 37 backing it up here's an old version [1]. Did you miss it, or just gloss over it? Either way, that’s a solid anchor for the claim—court records don’t lie, and it’s sourced properly. If you’re gonna call something out as a fail, at least make sure it’s not sitting there with evidence staring you in the face. That oversight should’ve been your fail, not the article’s. Give it another look and let’s get this straight. Afro 📢Talk! 11:17, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing after I pointed out the error. You need to check each citation yourself, not wait for other reviewers to do it for you. Then submit for GA and DYK, etc. Cielquiparle (talk) 11:59, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey there. I was just wondering why the URA leaderboard hasn't updated after I added sources to a couple articles yesterday (1, 2, 3, 4). Is there something I did wrong? JTtheOG (talk) 20:50, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@JTtheOG I noticed today it was buggy too! I wondered if I had too many tabs open or had just imagined it, but if you look at the bot history, you can see it's been actively deleting stats for some reason. Posted to the URA project Talk page. Cielquiparle (talk) 21:19, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
These sources are reflected on the monthly leaderboard (User:ARandomBot321/URAleaderboard). The points don't get added to the yearly one until you hit five in a month. It should be adding once you hit five in any month, so I will fix the yearly one later. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 21:26, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Women in Green's May 2025 edit-a-thon

[edit]

Hello Cielquiparle: WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Editathon event in May 2025!

Running from May 1 to 31, 2025, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) editathon event – Wildcard Edition! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to any and all women and women's works during the event period. Want to improve an article about a women's rights activist? Go for it. An Olympian gold medallist? Absolutely. A famous painting by a woman? Yes! GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to receive a special WiG barnstar for their efforts. We hope to see you there!

(You are receiving this message as you are on the Women in Green mailing list. If you wish to opt out of receiving future messages, feel free to remove yourself from the list.) MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:46, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you - and article title change?

[edit]

Thank you for untangling the Alpha School wiki articles! For the one that is not about the defunct Oregon school, I've added some details and I wonder if the article title should be "Alpha School" instead of Alpha High School. The school has several campuses and expanding out of Texas as well, but they aren't all high school level - some start as early as kindergarten. Please take a look, see what you think: Alpha High School.

Wikipedian-in-Waiting (talk) 18:33, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Wikipedian-in-Waiting. Thanks for the update. Let's continue the discussion on the article Talk page(s). Cielquiparle (talk) 06:09, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Betsy Arakawa Hackman.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file from a commercial source (e.g. Associated Press, Getty Images), where the file itself is not the subject of sourced commentary. If you can explain why the file can be used under the non-free content guidelines, please add the appropriate non-free use tag and rationale.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Whpq (talk) 17:28, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Whpq. Just delete it! I didn't know that the Associated Press file made it a dealbreaker, but it makes sense that that's why the "other" image used in the NBC News article had featured so long on that article instead. @RoySmith Oh well. This is why my original concern still stands: We should resolve any image-related issues in DYK-nominated articles before the article hits the main page, regardless of whether or not the image is actually featured on the main page. It's not worth the scramble and drama on the day. Cielquiparle (talk) 17:58, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect if this came up while it was still being reviewed at DYK, it would have been held. I agree with you that the amount of drama that spun out of this just wasn't worth the effort. As for the fair-use issues, that's really something I don't understand that well and I'm happy to defer to those who do. RoySmith (talk) 18:08, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
PS, I was not previously aware that press agency photos have special rules. RoySmith (talk) 18:21, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Press Agency, or other commercial photo agencies like stock photo companies make money through licensing fees for the use of the images. Our use of those images are considered to be non-compliant with WP:NFCC#2 and is subject to speedy deletion (WP:F7). Having said that, some companies (like Getty) have been known to try to license images for which there is no need to go through them for licensing. For example, I remember seeing some US Government images which would be public domain being in the Getty catalogue. Also, for older images, the Associated Press failed to comply with the copyright rules in effect at the time and so there are AP images which are public domain. See c:Category:Photographs distributed by Associated Press. -- Whpq (talk) 18:49, 15 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Notice

The article The Thomas Crown Affair (2026 film) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The film is not shooting, and the date is actually for 2027. A draft already exists.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This is an automated notification. Please refer to the page's history for further information. DatBot (talk) 00:31, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
