FAIRS OF INDIA is a monthly series of Lok Sabha Television that started with the Pushkar Mela in November, 2012, and since that episode it has covered 13 melas—some world-famous, others lesser known—in nearly as many states of India. The aim of the programme is to showcase the living cultures, traditions, beliefs, crafts and arts of India. Fairs and melas have since antiquity been the main point of trade and commerce for both villages and urban centres. In doing so, they have kept alive a very significant part of the Indian way of life. In a way the Fairs of India are the amber in which are preserved priceless aspects of the soul of India.
The host of the show is DHIRAJ SINGH who brings with him years of arts and letters journalism in India as well as his own practice as a visual artist and who is also the Programming Consultant to the Channel. The Producer of the show is AAKASH ARUN whose documentary 'In Search of Destiny' has won him many plaudits. The music of the series is often recorded on location with traditional musicians who are taking part in the mela. In the context of Indian television such a travel show has never been attempted that makes this one quite unique. This is further enhanced by the reach of Lok Sabha TV that has been made a mandatory channel by the Government.
In its 11 episodes Fairs of India has covered all parts (i.e. North, South, East and West) of the country and has showcased Pushkar (Rajasthan), Rann Utsav (Gujarat), Mahakumbh (U.P.), Surajkund (Haryana), Charak (West Bengal), Saka Dawa (Jammu & Kashmir), Behdienkhlam (Meghalaya), Boat Festival (Kerala), Sair (Himachal Pradesh), Mysore Dasara (Karnataka), Banaras Utsav (Uttar Pradesh) and Pongal (Tamil Nadu).
