Question from Zucherama1234 (07:28, 2 December 2025)
[edit]Hello, how do I format a wikipediaedia article? I'm thinking about creating a article about a transgender short filmaker. --Zucherama1234 (talk) 07:28, 2 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Zucherama1234: Hi, you can take a look at other film maker articles to see how to format it. Just make sure yours is notable, and that you cite reliable sources. Please take a look at Help:Introduction for an introduction to editing and how Wikipedia works. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 22:33, 2 December 2025 (UTC)

Question from Aviator Jr (16:21, 28 December 2025)
[edit]How to create a Category page? --Aviator Jr (talk) 16:21, 28 December 2025 (UTC)
- @Aviator Jr: You should be able to create it by simply creating a page titled "Category:name of category". It should fill up automatically when things are added to it. Please remember to add categories to the category if applicable, along with a description. See WP:CREATECAT for more info. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 19:28, 28 December 2025 (UTC)

[edit]As as direct descendant, I want to learn how to correctly edit Alexander C. Eschweiler's page. Can you direct me to the instructions for how to add verifiable sources? Thank you. --Vitruvianpaths0122 (talk) 03:13, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Vitruvianpaths0122: Hi, since you have a conflict of interest with the subject of the article, please follow the instructions listed at Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard/COI to request a change. Generally, the person adding information is responsible for citing reliable sources. If you have a source, you can provide a link to it, or provide sufficient information such that another editor is able to locate a copy. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:43, 1 January 2026 (UTC)

URA scripts, continuously check for probably unref articles
[edit]Hello, and happy New Year. I wanted to float an idea that I've had kicking around my head for some while about automatically checking for probably unreferenced articles. The idea being that we continuously add to the backlog rather than do it aperiodically in big chunks having scanned all of mainspace. It goes something like:
- collate a list of all pages in mainspace that were changed yesterday (or the day before yesterday)
- run the "Is this missing references?" script across them, and add any for which the answer is yes to your set of "probably unreferenced article" pages.
- I imagine this to be done whenever your true-up script runs, i.e. every day just after midnight.
- It helps in situations where editors go on a "remove unreliable source X" spree without adding {{Unreferenced}} to articles that then have no references. E.g. the footballdatabase.eu one that happened in the middle of the last backlog drive.
I'd be grateful for your thoughts. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 09:07, 13 January 2026 (UTC)
- @SunloungerFrog: Happy new year to you too! Sure, that seems doable. I'll have to look into where I can get a list of pages edited in the past day though, as I'm sure there's a better way than running a continuous tracking script. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 15:51, 13 January 2026 (UTC)
- I think I can lash together a Quarry query to get recently edited pages, but probably tomorrow now. I'll revert when I have something. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 23:10, 13 January 2026 (UTC)
- So I think that this Quarry query should give all articles whose last human (i.e. non-bot) edit was the day before yesterday. I chose the day before yesterday just to exclude articles that might be attracting a lot of edits. It takes about 70s to run, and returns about 47500 articles. Is that too many for your script to go through on a daily basis? Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 09:15, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
- @SunloungerFrog: That's roughly similar to how much it goes through for User:ARandomName123/unref1-8 every day, so it should be fine. Would take somewhere between 1 and 2 hours. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 16:51, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
- It would be instructive to do a couple of manual runs, just to see in practice how many probably unreferenced articles are turned up. It struck me that if you were to run it a couple of hours before midnight, that would reduce the numbers slightly too. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 17:03, 14 January 2026 (UTC)
- @SunloungerFrog: Would you prefer it be run before or after the true-up script? Also, PyWikiBot does not appear to have support for Quarry, so the SQL query would need to be run a different way. I'm leaning towards Superset as I have no experience with connecting to databases. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 02:32, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
- I suppose after the true-up script, to avoid working through problem pages twice? But it probably doesn't really matter. On the SQL front, can you just take the SQL from the Quarry query and then use this, i.e. the -mysqlquery parameter? Or I see that a PagePile can be used as an input, and PagePile can take a Quarry query ID as input. Or Superset looks good too, though I have never used it. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 05:40, 15 January 2026 (UTC)
- @SunloungerFrog: -mysqlquery would require me connect to the database, which I have never done before (though if you'd like to help out, for this or in general, I can give you access to the Toolforge project where the code is hosted). Superset would probably be the simplest way for me, as it already has a dedicated pagegenerator, and wouldn't need to be passed to another service, like Quarry/PagePile. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 02:26, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hmm... now that I've looked at the docs, the setup for the mysqlquery doesn't look that hard. I'll try that one out first. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:03, 16 January 2026 (UTC)
- @SunloungerFrog: Are you able to adjust the SQL query so that redirects are filtered out? And I'm assuming all pages listed are unique? ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 22:19, 18 January 2026 (UTC)
- OK, done that, needed a
AND page_is_redirect = 0in there too. And yes, I think it should be unique pages. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 23:08, 18 January 2026 (UTC)- @SunloungerFrog: Up and running at User:ARandomName123/unref8. The previously listed pages there were moved to unref7. Since it has been a while since I scanned through all articles, most, if not all, of the articles on the list are there because they were previously unsourced, and then edited, not because they were newly unsourced.
- I added it to the same program that does the true-up run (22:00), so it should run immediately after it (~23:00). It took an hour and twenty minutes, which is longer than I expected but probably due to the 50k articles it needed to scan through. I also ended up removing page_id and rev_timestamp from SELECT in the query, as only namespace and title are valid outputs. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 04:10, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- That looks great. It is heartening to see that the percentage of probably unreffed articles in that batch (36/48437 = 0.074%) is an order of magnitude less than the percentage of unreffed + probably unreffed articles in the whole encyclopedia (69182/7124018 = 0.971%) so we're not going to be adding loads of new articles to the probably unreffed backlog each time, and the total number (< 70,000) is probably not too far off the mark. And I think if we keep trickling it in like this, we will keep on top of it all. Will this run each night now? Thanks for doing all the hard work with the script / bot! Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 09:24, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- @SunloungerFrog: Yes, it will run every night. Not sure if you noticed but some stats were in the edit summary, most notably the 150 articles detected. Once duplicates were removed, that dropped to 36 which means ~75% of articles fulfilling the currently likely unreferenced criteria are already listed. This is a pretty smart way of keeping up to date on these articles (I'd planned to at one point do monthly/weekly runs through all 7m articles), so kudos to you for coming up with it! ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 14:04, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
- I hadn't seen the edit summaries, but they are great. Well, well done us for getting this up and running - I think it will keep the project on a good track. Now I am going to try and figure out how to write a Lua module to do some adding up on c:Data:URAstats_Data.tab so as to be able to display the current totals on the main project page. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 15:46, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

Question from Indian Wordsmith (07:46, 22 January 2026)
[edit]Hello Mentor,
I’ve added a paragraph along with a citation to the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Music_Lovers_Records.
“All eight records were released together as a single collection, organized into themed series such as Operatic Songs, Old-Time Songs, Hymns, Irish Songs, Novelty, and Popular Song & Dance, featuring popular music from the 1920s.”
Could you please review this and let me know if it is accurate? I would appreciate your suggestions if any changes are needed.
Thanks --Indian Wordsmith (talk) 07:46, 22 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Indian Wordsmith: Hi, and thanks for your edit! I feel
All the eight records as a single release
doesn't sound grammatically correct. Also, please include a page number for large PDFs, and if the preceding sentence is not supported by the source, you can indicate it with a {{citation needed}} tag. I've added {{reflist}} to the bottom of the page to display the reference section properly. Cheers, ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 05:07, 24 January 2026 (UTC)

Question from Marcocanova83 (19:51, 25 January 2026)
[edit]Marco Canova and Tom Dyer are the authors and copyright holders of the Flair Bartending Book. The project took approximately four years to research, write, and complete. During production, a ghostwriter was hired under a written contract. The contractual role was to assist with writing and drafting, but not to own, retain, or exploit any rights associated with the final work.
Under the contract, all copyright and exploitation rights were assigned to Marco Canova and Tom Dyer. As a result, the ghostwriter does not hold any ownership, co-authorship, or publication rights to the book. The involvement was contractual and does not confer authorship, licensing, or commercial rights to the book’s content or distribution.
The book has now been published, and Marco Canova and Tom Dyer are the sole authors and rights holders. The contract governing these rights was signed by all parties and is legally binding.

- We also wish to create a page of this historical book on wiki - we have many references to support and the fact that this manuscript sold in 28

Alternatively, let me know what the correct name is, and I can help move it for you. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:58, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

- Thank you so much, you are amazing. I have another question. I got feedback that the draft didn't meet notability standards; that the book itself is notable but not the author. I can't figure out, from reading the notability guidelines, how that is the case. I thought if a book were considered notable the author would also be. Is that not the case? Buffythevampslyr (talk) 21:55, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Buffythevampslyr: I'm assuming you're referring to the third criteria at the notability criteria for authors? You could try asking the reviewer on their talk page, but I will note that meeting any of those criteria does not guarantee an article is necessary. In my experience, editors would like to see more than a single notable book, or additional coverage of the author herself. You are also welcome to write an article on the book, which easily passes the notability criteria. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 22:50, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

[edit]Page title: David Wangerin I have formatted a page for this in my sandbox as much as I can without further help/advice. It includes links and citations. Citations for the 2 books mentioned are in 1st para, and I'm not sure if these might be more appropriate when books are listed later under 'Writing Career'. Can you advise on this and any other improvements I can make. Thanks --Disdoris (talk) 18:17, 29 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Disdoris: Hi, please add sources to prove his notability. That is, independent and reliable sources that provide significant coverage on the article subject. Biographies that only cite the subject are not likely to be accepted. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 01:13, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, I understand well that notability is an absolute requirement but have really got a bit stumped by how to provide evidence of this.
- I do notice that in Wikipedia's own History of Soccer in the United States there are 11 references to the book Soccer in a Football World https://archive.org/details/soccerinfootball0000wang dealing with the history of US soccer from 1685 to the early 1900s, indicating that this early history of the game is heavily reliant on the subject's book as its foundation. Does not that indicate some notability for the author?
- There exist a number of very complementary book reviews, such as this next link, but I'm not sure how to incorporate this and whether it would be regarded as independent and reliable The best book on American soccer (It is an Amazon review but is by Roger Allaway, a historian also much referenced in Wikipedia's own History of Soccer in the United States).
- Thanks Disdoris (talk) 23:36, 6 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Disdoris: If the book itself has been reviewed multiple times, then you can create an article on the book. Please note Amazon reviews are not considered reliable sources. One in a journal or a newspaper would be preferred. As for Wangerin, the notability guideline says that he must have
created or played a major role in co-creating a significant or well-known work or collective body of work. In addition, such work must have been the primary subject of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews
, so it is possible he may be notable under that criteria. However, in my experience reviewers would like to see more than one notable book. You may submit the article by adding {{subst:submit}} if you'd like a second opinion. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 10:28, 8 February 2026 (UTC)- I have added a few additions and further edits - though they are negligible in nature. I have struggled to find book reviews that would seem to qualify in the way you describe to support notability. When I have tried to link some of those that do seem appropriate, they appear in the text with the full http title, which seems unsuitable. I would like to do as you suggest and please submit for a second opinion. I have added {{AfC submission|||ts=20260212173157|u=Disdoris|ns=3}} at top of my article as directed, but would like to be confident this is correct to route me for a second opinion. Could you please confirm or direct me. Disdoris (talk) 17:31, 12 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Disdoris: Normally, adding the tag is the first opinion, but since you've asked me to evaluate the article, I guess it then becomes a second opinion. Feel free to add {{subst:submit}} to the top of your page. As for referencing issues, please take a look at Help:Introduction to referencing with VisualEditor/2. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:03, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
- Apologies, I don't understand your first sentence there and am now confused re your or another's first and second opinions. You'll notice I already added {{subst:submit}} trying to follow your earlier direction "if you'd like a second opinion." What does that bracketed term mean? This leaves me unsure of the status of my article. I'd like to have chance to improve it and wonder if is there a time limit on how long it can remain in Sandbox to attempt this. I am disinclined to submit it just yet to a further level where it might well be deleted. Thanks. Disdoris (talk) 17:33, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Disdoris: Sorry about the confusion on that first sentence, you can safely ignore it.
- As for your adrticle, it doesn't look like you've added {{subst:submit}} to User:Disdoris/sandbox. If by bracketed term, you're referring to subst:submit, then it's a template that should add a big yellow box to the top of your submission. If you're talking about <nowiki, then it's used to type the syntax for the yellow box template, without actually having the template generated. The time limit for drafts is six months after the last edit.
- If you're having issues with the submission, I can add it for you if needed. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:21, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, I was referring to subst:submit which I had already added above article's name - I presume not the correct place since no yellow box appeared! Thanks for clarifying time limit for drafts and for offer of help with submission. I am still concerned that if I take it to this next stage, that it could be refused to the point where it is deleted, or is this a process where the article is reviewed and returns to me with feedback for improvement? Would appreciate if you clarify this for me. Thanks. Disdoris (talk) 12:36, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Disdoris: The most common two results from the submission process are that it gets accepted or declined. If it gets accepted, it gets moved to mainspace (where the article are). If it gets declined, you will receive a message with reviewer feedback. You are welcome to improve it, and resubmit it again. In my experience, unless your submission is a copyright violation, attacking someone, or a hoax, it is very unlikely it will be refused to the point it is deleted. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:16, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks very much for this - it makes things much clearer. I am planning to make additions if I can find more material, so may well call upon your help for the submission process when I am ready. Thanks. Disdoris (talk) 21:19, 20 February 2026 (UTC)

Hi ARandomName123, My name is Graham Cooper. Have opened a wiki account with the sole purpose of adding/correcting information about my deceased partner, the Maltese artist Isabelle Borg (1959-2010) see IsabelleBorg.com. Last year, I attempted to contact Wikipedia about adding/correcting info about Isabelle, was given a Wikipedia Appeal Key, but since then have not been able to find how/where to enter it ... I'm now seventy-one, and feel the need to get things done before it is too late ! Regards Graham. --ILAB&GC (talk) 16:36, 30 January 2026 (UTC)
- @ILAB&GC: Hi Graham, can you please describe what should be added, and/or what is currently incorrect on Isabelle Borg's article? Please include reliable sources if possible. As for the Wikipedia Appeal Key, it is used in block appeals, but I'm not sure why you would have received one just for contacting Wikipedia. - @ILAB&GC or ~2026-74542-9: I noticed you had a newspaper clipping in a few of those links, which is great. Do you have clippings for any of the other ones? On a side note, I noticed there was no image of Isabelle Borg on her article. Would you be willing to donate an image of her for use on her page? Thanks, ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:04, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
- Also, just to confirm, the newspaper in the clippings is The Sunday Times of Malta, not the British The Sunday Times? ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:10, 4 February 2026 (UTC)

[edit]I just added the 2020 population of Seabeck, Washington, and cited the URL of the Census Bureau page where I got it. But I didn't do it right. Not sure what I did wrong. - @LelandRoss: Hi, the {{cite web}} citation template has a number of parameters that need to be filled in. For example, a typical blank template would look like this: . To use the census as a reference, simply fill in the template with the information where possible. In this case,
{{cite web |date= |title= |url= |website= |location= |publisher= |access-date=}}

January–February 2026 NPP drive - Phase 2
[edit]
Welcome to Phase 2 of the January–February 2026 NPP drive. During Phase 1, we reviewed 16,658 articles and 4,416 redirects, and there is currently a backlog of 16,475 articles and 23,782 redirects in the queue. Fantastic job! Completing 22,502 patrols in the first phase made a significant dent in the backlog. Let's keep our foot on the gas for Phase 2, and I hope we can achieve even more reviews than Phase 1. Best of luck!

Looking at the draft I find it dubious if he passes NAC 1, 6 or 7 (I don't see any awards or other recognition for his activities mentioned in the article, nor any SIGCOV media or academic appreciation of his work), but I always believe it's best to publish and article first and then see what happens at AfD, rather than rely on the judgement of a single person. Hello! I am a new editor on Wikipedia and I want to contribute in cybersecurity-related topics such as ethical hacking, bug bounty, and penetration testing.
Could you please guide me on: 1) How to properly add reliable references and citations? 2) What are the rules to avoid self-promotion or conflict of interest? 3) Any beginner-friendly tasks or articles I can start editing?
Thank you for your support! --Mkfih3r (talk) 11:44, 13 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Mkfih3r: Hi! For 1), there should be a button that says "Cite" at the top of the page when you are in editing mode. Add a citation after a new sentence, or as needed. Please take a look at Help:Referencing for beginners for further information.
- As for 2, the guideline is that you should not directly edit articles relating to yourself, family, friends, clients, employers or other relationships. Instead, you need to create an edit request, where you can propose changes with reliable sources, and a different editor will review them and decide whether to implement them or not. Using Wikipedia for self-promotion is prohibited.
- To get started editing, try the example tasks at Special:Homepage, which can be sorted by topic. Alternatively, you can check out WikiProjects related to your interests, for example, Wikipedia:WikiProject Computing. Wikipedia:Task Center also has some tasks to do, for example, copyediting, fact checking, or reference adding. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 08:59, 14 February 2026 (UTC)

Question from Aviator Jr (05:10, 16 February 2026)
[edit]What is the use of "anchor" template? --Aviator Jr (talk) 05:11, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Aviator Jr: Anchors are used to direct to a specific part of a page. For example, the link Help:Link#Anchors uses the anchor #Anchors to direct you to the part of the page under the heading Anchors. They are automatically generated using headings/subheadings, and can be manually added using the {{anchor}}. Since renaming a heading will rename the automatically generated anchor, links pointing to the old anchor will no longer work. The anchor template can be used to readd the old anchor invisibly.
