This article says "[The building] served as a courthouse for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas from 1862 until 1891. . . ." That statement contains no citation to a source.

However, according to the article, the building was built for use a US customs house the year that the Civil War began, 1861. Is the article correct that the US government changed the use of the building from customs house to courthouse in 1862?

Galveston was controlled by the Confederacy or the State of Texas (which was part of the Confederacy) until October 1862, when Galveston was captured by Union forces, but the Confederates retook the city in January 1863. Is the writer of the article saying that that US captured the city and changed the use of the building during the last several months of 1862? That was when the only access to the city would have been by warship and normal court house activities would have been difficult at best. RW7890 (talk) 03:58, 20 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
