The Dolphin: Story of a Dreamer
[edit]The Dolphin: Story of a Dreamer is a 2009 computer animated family film based off of the novel,The Dolphin: Story of a Dreamer, written in 1996 by Sergio Bambaren. This film was produced by Dolphin Films[1] and Passworld-Italy in association with DDG-Germany. Originally this film was released in Argentina in 2009 in Spanish [2]. It was a straight to DVD release in the US in 2010[3]. In 2009 20th Century Fox acquired the Latin American distribution rights for this film [4]. This film was directed by Eduardo Schuldt[5], who was also the screenwriter alongside Michael Wogh[6]. Judy Kellem wrote the English version of the screenplay [7]. Sergio Bambaren was the producer and Jan Alvarez-Guerra[8] was the executive producer. The Dolphin: Story of a Dreamer follows Daniel Alexander Dolphin, a young dolphin who abandons the safety of his pod and lagoon in search of his dream to discover the true purpose of his life [9].
Plot
[edit]Daniel Alexander Dolphin is a young teenage dolphin that is different from the rest of the dolphins in his pod due to his ability to dream. One day he and his dolphin friend Michael race to the fishing zone, but Daniel gets carried away and leaps over the barrier that separates the lagoon from the ocean. Michael tells him that he’ll get into trouble, but Daniel ignores him and goes surfing, a favorite and forbidden hobby of his. After riding a wave Daniel gets caught by Leader, the leader dolphin of the pod, who takes him back into the lagoon. When Daniel is back inside the lagoon with Michael, a mysterious voice from outside the barrier calls out to Daniel, saying he has a mission to accomplish. But for some reason, only Daniel can hear this voice, as Michael does not react. Suddenly a giant manta ray flies over the barrier and into the lagoon. Michael and Daniel swim over, following it to the center of their dolphin community.
The manta ray, named Manta, then tells Daniel that the sun is in the right place, and that if he wants to find the wave of his dream, he has to leave his pod. Manta encourages Daniel to keep being himself, to never let his fear get in the way of his dreams, and to always listen to the voice in his heart. She says that if he follows his dreams he will never be lonely again. After Manta leaves, the Leader dolphin reveals that she is on a mission to help others achieve what they want. He also discusses that there is a creature from the depths that is close to the reef that haunts the dolphin pod. That night, Daniel sneaks back up the surface and hears the Voice of the Sea, who tells him that she sent the Manta to him, and that he is ready to leave the lagoon. When the Leader wakes up and tells him to go back to the pod, Daniel jumps over the barrier and into the open ocean. The Leader then labels Daniel as an outcast. In the depths of the ocean, a barracuda tells a giant barracuda, Lucius the Dream-eater, that Daniel the dreamer has left the lagoon. Lucius responds with a malicious laugh.
Daniel is lost in the middle of the open ocean, and makes friends with a clumsy cuttlefish named Carl. Lucius and his band of barracudas find Daniel and chase him around the ocean until he is trapped in a cave. Lucius is hit with a few falling rocks as the cave collapses, and Daniel and Carl are able to escape. The Voice of the Sea tells Daniel that he should follow the sun, and that if he surfs the perfect wave, he will open up the world of dreams to all sea creatures. Daniel and Carl happen upon a giant purple shell, rumored to be the entrance to paradise. The Master called Maitre, is a giant purple octopus that teaches Daniel about the solar eclipse with his telescope. When Daniel wants to leave, Maitre won’t let him, saying that he has become a slave like all the other sea creatures that live within the purple shell. Daniel escapes with Carl, and breaks open the top part of the shell, freeing the enslaved sea creatures.
Along the way Daniel and Carl meet a shark and teach him how to make friends by not eating them. They also make friends with a sunfish who dreams of touching the sun, and learn that Daniel’s story has spread throughout the ocean. Lucius breaks free from the rocks and attacks Daniel and Carl. Carl is knocked unconscious, and Daniel tries to fight back, but fails. Lucius tries to suck away his dream but is somehow unable to. Whales and the other sea creatures that Daniel befriended come to his aid and protect him from being eaten by Lucius. The Voice of the Sea reminds Lucius that he was once a dolphin too, until a barracuda lied to him saying that his family disappeared. The anger had turned him into a giant barracuda. The Voice of the Sea says that his family is okay, and Lucius wonders if he can ever be forgiven of all his evil acts. The Voice says that he must forgive himself and Lucius changes back into a dolphin.
On the day of the solar eclipse Daniel goes to the surface and faces a giant wave. At first he says it’s impossible to surf, that he could drown. But he pushes that thought aside, saying he doesn’t want any regrets, and surfs the giant wave. After successfully surfing, Daniel realizes that he loves his life, and a magical wave of inspiration inspires everyone to go after his or her dream. At the end of the film Daniel goes back to his lagoon and influences his pod to live free out in the open sea.
