From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

""Fit-for-purpose"" is an expression that describes the most appropriate or suitable action/item for meeting an objective, now; the optimal solution; often associated with quality[1]. It is more than the ‘quick-fix’, it is the long-term resolution. In the instance of seeking a solution to any issue, a fit-for-purpose solution is one that is uniquely aligned/adapted to the issues, is compatible with other elements in the environment and addresses more than surface symptoms[2]; it addresses the core of the issue. At the same time, the fit-for-purpose solution must give consideration to scale, meaning that it provides the best solution now and for the ensuing future, exceeding the return on investment (ROI).

In relation to any human behavioral change, learning and development practices and/or team effectiveness, a fit-for-purpose solution is one that is fully aligned/adaptable and specifically designed to resolve the issues of an individual or a group of individuals[3]. It requires full consideration of the required standards for the job to be performed. The fit-for-purpose resolution has long-term effects and strives for sustainability.

A term often used in the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)[4], defined as ‘an informal term used to describe a process, configuration item, IT service, etc., that is capable of meeting its objectives or service levels. Being fit-for-purpose requires suitable design, implementation, control and maintenance”. As related to Information Security solutions fit-for-purpose describes that which is appropriate for a specific organization; a solution that will meet specific expectations.
