Dāna (Sanskrit, Pali) is a Buddhist term often translated as "generosity", or "giving". In Buddhism, it the first of the three ways to make merit (puññakiriyā-vatthu), and is the first of the ten perfections (pāramī) of Theravada Buddhism as well as the first of the six perfections (pāramitā) of Mahayana Buddhism.
Role in Buddhism
[edit]In Buddhism, Dāna serves the purpose improving the quality of ones mind by counteracting the mental defilements,[1] as well generating merit which creates good future results for the giver in accordance with the Buddhist concept of karma.
